Except the Beatles literally fucked around on their instruments playing day-long gigs in Germany 7 days a week. Yes they recognize patterns that work, but it's a combination of learning other people's music and fucking around on their instruments, not following something they read in a book. That's the case with the majority of these boomer musicians. Occasionally you'd get someone who was classically trained, usually a roadie who gets recruited for keys, but most music written from rock/pop musicians is quite literally fucking around on their instruments.

To be honest as a composer i try to forget music theory as much as possible to keep my composition as free as possible.
But as a musician, i fucking use it, everyday.

The Beatles used to write their songs down, even in a basic manner, just to indicate how long they needed to play something, or the repeats. Writing a song down can be as simple as indicating the number of bars, chords and the rhythm.
