It's not about nostalgia, it has many varied subgenres that are darker or happier, portrait utopia or dystopia, want to engulf you in a state of hypnagogia or takes an observatory point of view at society or what the society could've been if modern history was different. Nostalgia is just one of the basic aesthetics, that's a meme now rather than used technique
It's like saying metal is just loud guitars and fast drumming and screaming
Or hip hop is just rhymes atop of computer-generated beat
Or prog rock is just weird time signatures
Or jazz is just playing on trumpet
Sure, you can listen to all of it like a robot and treat it like that, but it's about emotion and mood that it conveys. Sometimes lower quality is wanted and a positive trait of a song.
