I just copped a cd of Photek's Modus Operandi album at the weekly 2nd hand market in my hometown this afternoon.. I've had it on vinyl from time, but could never really figure out where this specific tune starts, because it basically kinda flows into the previous track (glad I got that sorted now ).. always been a bit obsessed with it, as it feels so otherworldly: those electronic, high pitched bleeps combined with the jazz-like double bass tones and razor sharp breaks which evoke images of images of kung fu fighters chopping down an opponent with their bare hands.. I could be wrong, but I reckon amongst most junglists Photek is mainly praised for his slightly older stuff, the 93/94 Studio Pressure releases in particular.. and rightly so, because each and every one of em is a classic that to this day remains untouchable.. but to me personally his 95-97 output is where things got really interesting.. the breaks still sound like actual drum samples (as opposed to most D&B that was produced a little later down the line, which seemed to favour more clinical and electronic/digital beats), but they're not just looped up or chopped, rearranged and then layered, instead they're all meticulously polished (without losing that "real drums" feel) and programmed to make every single hit count.. it felt so exciting to hear this type of stuff for the first time back then, and made me wonder what was to come next.. unfortunately what came next was predominantly a simplification of the rhythms, with more or less all of the D&B coming out utilising the same boring 2 step patterns..

I kinda fell out of love with D&B proper for a while after the late 90s, and the only producers whose records I was still buying in the 2000s were Paradox, Nucleus, Fracture and the rest of their Drumfunk contemporaries.. I'm glad there's a lot of new producers out there currently, who are pushing things forward again, doing jungle, D&B and hardcore with a solid 90s foundation, without just trying to make things sound like one-on-one throwback jams.. in fact, it seems like this "new era of jungle" has already been going on for longer now than its initial heydays.. but still, sometimes I just wish Photek would stop scoring TV shows for a couple of months and crank out an album or 2 like this one..
