6/10
9/10 if i only go by stuff from the last decade or so.

I like heavyness of it. I like the guys voice in what little he sang.

Only slight criticisms, there are huge chunks of time where theres no singing and a lot of the long instrumental parts didnt hold my interest.
Little too slow and not quite enough rythym for my taste. The first 8 songs seemed to have very repetitive riffs. The last 2 songs were probably my favorite giza starter some shit and something else i forgot, they really broke off from the sound of the rest of the album.
Al in all a solid band, best you can expect from these days i guess. Id go see them if they came around here.

Glad you liked it, yeah they're great live I've seen them twice already and the first time they blew my hearing out. I would recommend Sleep's Holy Mountain if you haven't heard it already, it's a lot less drawn out and slow with the instrumentals than the Sciences. I don't think you would like Dopesmoker though since that one pushes the slowness and repetition to the extreme but it's honestly great too in the right mood and after a few listens.

I was going to ask about that, glad they sound ok live. A lot of bands ive seen live that have a similar heavy guitar sound to them sound bad live. Ive seen The Sword twice and they were terrible both times.

Matt Pike's guitar tone is so thick and I was just starting out on guitar at the time and I bought an Orange amp because of how good he sounded when I saw them. The second time I saw them it wasn't as loud as the first time maybe because the venue didn't want them to play past a certain volume, but the first time they really had their entire wall of amps on and cranked to 10, and it sounded like a cross between a lion's roar and a jet taking off.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't think I will ever like this album. That doesn't make it bad, it just doesn't make a lasting impression on me. Maybe I need to dig deeper into death/doom, but there are other bands that sound similar that I feel capture the cavernous atmosphere without sounding nearly as derivative (Swallowed's Lunarterial comes to mind). Bathory was despised by a lot of people when the band was still around though, especially in the early days. Reviewers heard that noisy stuff and just shat all over it. Not him, but I would consider two first ones to be atmospheric black metal such as Filosofem and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss. Of course excluding Sverddans, which is homage to thrash metal bands that Varg listens to. I wouldn't call Umskiptar to any kind of black metal, but viking metal such as Bathory after the black metal beginnings.

Almost all new genre pioneers are hated first by journalists. Whole professional music reviewing is gigantic joke though. Too many times records get bad rating, because the reviewer doesn't have clue about the genre. Too many times records get good rating, just because the artist is popular.

There's lot of nu metal, alt metal, djent, metalcore, goth rock, glam rock, symphonic metal etc. all genres which aren't actually metal at all. Sahara is a killer album. Lots of killer riffs with that prog flavor and that middle eastern spice. Mabool is their masterpiece imo, but this one gets second place.
