Can Someone Tell Me Why People Rate His Music So Highly?

I don't understand it.
Can a fan give me their reasons for loving his stuff?
His oldest stuff just sounds like Ween for people that don't like dick jokes.

Odelay is good tier and Midnite Vultures is a genuinely funny spoof that also bangs

idk i always heard he had a deal with scientology to back his career or some shit

sauce
?

Everuthing he did from 1994 up to 2002 is genuinely fantastic. His mid-2000's work while not as good as his earlier stuff was still pretty solid.

Idk that was just the rumor about him when he got big. Hes a jew and a scientoligist so people just assumed his career was bought and paid for.

Hes pretty fucking lame i dont get it either. Not bad music per se, but its irrelevant, everyone can live without it, its just there filling a slot. Its obvs industry pushed.

Why?
What is good about it, that's what the thread is about. You seem to be a fan, he seems really milquetoast, why is he not?

who the fuck is this?

i think this is part of the reason a lot of people like him, they can have the irony without it being as silly as ween, although i like ween as well
I really like his stuff from 1994-2000, but it isn't deep. it just sounds cool and has a mix of genres that's easily digestible.
I think part of my enjoyment comes from him being one of the first musicians that i really loved, so my taste kind of formed around it
anyone who tells you that he's great because of sea change or morning phase is pretentious, Beck's sincere music is lame because he doesn't have that much to say

I love that he put out an album as sheet music, so in order to hear it youd have to play it yourself

so basically gimmicky but without the sincerity and from my view at least, less musically adept at genre-blending
Must just be a product of his time and the press's desperation to find the next-big-thing.
Thanks for the measured and honest response.

It might also be that some of his music sounds weird to normies but is still catchy and accessible
His best album isn’t even that well recognised as his best outside of Yea Forums most people seem to think that his best is either sea change or odelay
midnite vultures seems to get dismissed by a lot of normies because they think it’s too silly, which is a shame because it’s by far his best

he had a very mid 90s aesthetic
nerdy looking, dressed like a hobo
non threatening, sickly and weak looking. And he had a voice like a cartoon character and Gen X is nothing if not their love of cartoons.

There are a lot of NPC's. His music is the safest, most middle of the road, cream of wheat music in existence. Of course it does well.

the pedo from glee actually did a good job

I think he's too talented for him just to be labeled "gimmicky".

I like Beck's Serge Gainsbourg rip-off songs.

You've either never actually listened to any of his albums or you have only listened to his folk stuff. Either way go listen to Mutations and Midnite Vultures.

I, for one, still love stereopathetic soulmanure, mellow gold, and one foot in the grave. Also like Ween, and don't get your point.

Why does he stand out to you?

He makes ok music
I think he definitely has some talent into him, he makes accessible, catchy music but blends it with other genres resulting in good but not astounding songs

Honestly he is like a middle point between Gorillaz and Ween. He is not as interesting as the latter but shares some of their appeal and mixes it with some light genre blending (done better than Gorillaz)

I'd say, that, rather than being an uninteresting artist that is pushed by Scientology, he simply scratched an itch that most of us had as teenagers/during the period his best stuff came out, and now we appreciate him for that even if it's not really interesting music anymore

How the hell hes not the slightest bit obscure

He produced a couple Charlotte Gainsbourgs albums I like a lot too
