what the fuck is math rock.

Post rock with very complex cords and sequences.

also rhythmic complexity which i'd argue is more of a determining factor
just cause a lot of bands have a style that might include both genres doesn't mean they are related
post-hardcore and emo are much more closely related to math rock

I loved Grow.
first time I heard it I thought it was noodle-core. It's growing on me tho

Didn't know they had a new album coming out desu. I listened to Woohoo and Newborn Sun a while ago but haven't heard anything else.

I recommend you check out Grow. There was a good few months where I'd listen to it every day. youtube.com/watch?v=CX3WTWpltbw
Their 2008 demo is good too

I'll give it a listen, don't really know why I haven't yet

Add9s, min7, maj7, min9, maj9, sus2, sus4 aren’t complex chords. Therell be other extensions but it’s usually just a consequence of open tunings. That’s part of the sound. Not too hard to achieve when you play in open tunings like DAEAC#E, which is Amaj chord with the 4th in the bass. A weird chord sure. Not necessarily complex. And i don’t think the intent in the music is to deliberately find “complex” cords. But the open tuning sound and the extensions and voicings that arise from the are moreso a textural am aesthetic thing. There lots of octaves and add chords and sus. there are some sharp 11s too. Cause a lot is in Lydian. Which can arise from say facgce tuning, which is an Fmaj9 chord.

Hella - Hold your horse is
Sucks
Slint- Spiderland
Good, not really a contemporary or Midwest Mathy. More of an alt rock, post rock sound.

toe and that's it

Florals albums are good.
Mouse on the keys is good.
Via Luna is good.
Suffer like G did is good.
Stage Kids is good.
