billy parker's fourth world - freedom of speech

Freddie is in my opinion the greatest trumpet player of all time. His playing on Doin' Alright (Dexter Gordon) is amazing if you haven't checked it out.

hands down my favorite album

Anyone know this? Can you recommend something similar? Doesn't have to be the oud, but some other ethnic instrument/tradition blended with jazz.

Everyone ITT should listen to George Russel's Ezz-thetics. Especially if you like Eric Dolphy.

Dis shiet and Code Girl are what I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Both pretty great IMO.

>Karma by Pharoah Sanders?

What other jazz albums look good on shirts?

I'm new to jazz. What's some good electric and fusion stuff like Head Hunters and Bitches Brew?

>Lary Young-Unity
>Let Freedom Ring
>Big Fun
>Billy Cobham- Spectrum
>The Black Ark
>Joe Henderson- Multiple
>Eero Koivistoinen- Wahoo
>Billy Harper- Black Saint
>Godspelized

Now that the dust has settled, how was it?

Attached: emanon.jpg (412x550, 219K)

how do you like Woody Shaw? he's like Hubbard on steroids and compositionally a bit more interesting imo

try Brecker Bros

interesting concept but to me it felt way too long and unfocused, maybe I'll have to listen to it again

my local museum of modern art has another piece by the artist who designed that album cover that would also make an excellent album cover

black saint, a love supreme, the list can go on..

I fucking love jazz guitar, it's the best jazz instrument.

Are there any albums with soloing on bass? I know it's not exactly a staple, but someone must have tried it?

Attached: 1223167[1].jpg (300x300, 20K)

finally got this on vinyl this week

youtube.com/watch?v=Znr4KRw2au8

how much soloing you want?
there are albums that are just solo bass even

youtube.com/watch?v=Ph7B876Q0eo

there's a recent one from this year on ECM label from Larry Grenadier - has a kind of a folky sound to it

>there are albums that are just solo bass even
I'd love that actually. I got the impression that most musicians in jazz didn't think bass solos belong in jazz. I'm happy tobe mistaken though, thanks!

and how the fuck is this jass, user?

it's my favorite fake jazz album

what did he mean by this

Attached: cover.jpg (500x498, 81K)

yo

Dhafer Youssef and Rabih Abou-Khalil

I'm a big Woody Shaw fan, but don't enjoy listening to him quite as much as I enjoy Freddie. Great player though.

"Will You Still Be Mine" off of All Blues by Ron Carter

This one's got me hooked lately. Not his best work, but definitely overlooked in the discog.

Where should someone who's never really listened to Sun Ra start? I'm a big fan of 60s hard bop if it helps.

WHat could he have come up with if he had a few more years in him?

youtube.com/watch?v=FI-4HNQg1JI&t=40s

I wouldn't go as far as greatest player, but definitely one of the best soloists

dizzy gets my nod because basically everyone plays like him

Finally found a copy of this for a reasonable price

Attached: MI0001798034[1].jpg (500x499, 49K)

Yesterday i listened to pic related and Frank Wright's One For John. Check them out if you haven't.

Woody Shaw is amazing. Blackstone Legacy is a top 10 for me.

oops forgot pic

Attached: evidence.jpg (298x300, 11K)

Sorry if that was confusing - I didn't mean to say Freddie is objectively the best trumpet player of all time. Just my personal favorite. What are your favorite Dizzy recordings?

A lot of people seem to rate Shorter's other albums higher but this is by far my favourite. Something about that title track, nothing else sounds like it.

Attached: juju.jpg (1024x1024, 273K)

I'm by no means deeply immersed in his discography, but there's definitely something there for fans of many types of jazz.

I'd check out Jazz in Silhouette and Super-Sonic Jazz to start out with, as they're more tame. Atlantis and Space is the Place are considered more seminal records, but they're far more chaotic than the others I recommended.

Album that got me into him was Lanquidity, though. Not post-bop at all, but very funky and goes down super smooth. A must-listen imo. Happy listening.

Sun Ra's discography is so diverse and uneven that I think it's alright to start with a good comp like Marshall Allen Presents Sun Ra and his Arkestra: In the Orbit of Ra or Gilles Peterson Presents Sun Ra and His Arkestra: To Those of Earth... And Other Worlds to get a taste

Got any heavily bass-driven albums that aren't just soloing, bros? Would appreciate

Listen to the V.S.O.P. quintet, Ron Carter is amplified on those live recordings and holy fuck is the tone fat.

Checking this rn and it actually fucks, thanks

No problem, enjoy

Bitches Brew, mahfucka

Anybody is a fan of Jazz-Rock stuff like If?

that guitar FUCKS

Attached: interstellar space.jpg (599x537, 84K)

this lineup my goodness
Stolen Moments is maybe my fav jazz recording

ive heard a few of his and not been super in love with them, i'll check this one out thank u

good shit

Attached: 51JCEZOBGGL._SY355_.jpg (354x355, 17K)

Can anybody recommend any jazz with funk rhythms but post-bop type harmony?

You losers don’t sleep on Miguel Zenon right?

Attached: A397CD5D-8CBE-4DD7-B379-4A68BC51DEA2.jpg (1521x1521, 1.43M)

Idk what the shit you wsnt but go abd listen to casiopea 1979 album

Most of the recordings of him in his prime are really bad quality but Afro shows him off at his best

I also love Musical Safari if only for his compositions

God, this is the one I keep returning too, something about it's atmosphere is so powerful to me, some of Wayne Shorter's stuff gets a similar level but Maiden Voyage and Empyrean Isles have this nocturnal, aquatic vibe that is just endlessly alluring to me. Maiden Voyage is possibly my favourite composition ever honestly, what a wonderful song, those opening chords just do shit to my mind and body. The Flood version is fantastic

Yusef Lateef's Detroit: Latitude 42° 30' Longitude 83° maybe?

Listen to the version on this album. Hancock himself plays on it but there's no horns. It's a very fitting composition for vibes.

Attached: happenings.jpg (500x500, 27K)

Yes or No is an unbelievable composition

check out this concert he did with the JLCO a few years ago, the arrangements of his stuff are dope

youtube.com/watch?v=Db8wyrpxdDo&t=3070s

Does anybody else ever feel like Lee Morgan is Freddie Hubbard with better tone? I love em both but it just feels like Morgan has such a similar playing style with a much richer sound.

the hell is that dude on the left playing?

Garbage resembling an acoustic guitar

Looks like a Cavaquinho.

I find them pretty distinct from one another tb h

Morgan is more fat and cool, Hubbard fiery and hot

Favourite contemporary trumpet players?

For me, it's thomas gansch or sean jones. Both have a very unique and original way of playing

Definitely Alex Sipiagin. Maybe a boring, obvious choice but he really is that good, especially if you like post-bop.
youtube.com/watch?v=AHN4q1wRK48

Just fucking wonderful. I love anything that has anything to do with Wynton Marsalis too so it's just that much better.

I ripped the whole thing and put it on a bootleg, quality's not amazing but I must have listened to it a dozen times already

POsted his the other day but the thread died straight away

What would you consider the essential big band CDs?

I have Big Swing Face, Cuban Fire and The Music of Pat Metheny (LA Big Band) already

Yeah Sipiagin is one of the best and he’s an even better composer than player.

Also Jeremy Pelt and Nick Payton.

How do you define post-bop? Faster than modal but slower than bebop?

It’s jazz that takes elements from bebop and modal jazz but takes a less traditional approach to them with more complex compositions and also elements of free jazz and the avant- garden at times.

For all the shit he gets, Wynton Marsalis has to be one of the greatest trumpet players of all time. If you haven't had the chance to listen to Live at the House of Tribes, do yourself a favor and check it out.

If you're looking for contemporary stuff, check out Back to the Sunset by the Dafnis Prieto big band. If we're talking all time, I would say April In Paris and Frank Sinatra Live at the Sands are great.

Grant green live at the lighthouse

he's probably the best of all time in a purely technical sense

there's no other player that has such mastery in both jazz and classical, even if he's not neccesarily the best in either genre

actually, allen vizzutti would be another contender for best technician now I think of it

The way I like to think of it is that it's modal/free jazz with foundations in bebop and hard bop rhythm. It is certainly hard to define though, yet it is distinctly different from other jazz.

bros can you point me to the hottest, hardest fuckin bop you know of? I havent found anything that tops pic related.

this is a good description. I'd also add that post-bop was sometimes defined by the conventions it broke, not the conventions it adhered to. One example is in the track Nefertiti by Miles Davis. In this track we see the role of time keeping/rhythm given to the horns while Tony Williams improvised on the drums.

I don't see it often mentioned

Attached: folder.jpg (500x500, 46K)

It's not really the same as blakey but if you just like ballsy drumming then you should look up Jeff Watts

Ambrose Akinmusire, Ralph Alessi, and Nils Pater Molaever are my favourites.

bump

Try Casiopea

Any love for Soil & Pimp Sessions here? Great super intense jazz. A Night on South Blue Mountain is my favorite album, First Lady is an amazing song.
