ITT: average- bad, but eclectic singers

What are some singers that aren’t really that good at singing, but get a pass because their voice is distinct or idiosyncratic?

Bob Dylan is commonly cited as this, and I know he's gonna show up in this thread, so I want to stop that before he comes up. Bob Dylan is a good singer, he hits all the notes properly, there's nothing bad about his singing. He just has a raspy voice. Lots of guys have raspy voices, that doesn't mean you're a bad singer. If you hit the notes, and you're able to hit the notes that consistently in so many albums and at so many shows, you're a great singer. He also has a ton of soul and power behind his words, which is why original Bob Dylan recordings are usually better than covers of Bob Dylan songs. Bob Dylan just has a raspy voice, he's not a bad singer

Bob Dylan

he has a small range and fails to hit some notes while performing. i like him, but he's not a good singer. he's average.
when he quit smoking for nashville skyline and self-portrait, i'd say he was a good singer. but most of the time, i would say he was average.

Mike Patton. He's got a batshit crazy vocal range, and he's able to sing in a bunch of different styles. But he doesn't really do any one thing particularly well imo.

>Bryan Ferry
beautiful voice. great range and versatility in his prime.

MJ sounds like he's fingering himself in every song. His dancing skills saved him

Daniel Johnston

he sounds like a dying rubber chicken but in the best way

her voice isn't conventionally pleasing but even from a technical standpoint she's amazing in addition to being extremely distinct

How is this on page 8 now? Did a bunch of threads get deleted?

Billy Corgan

Mark E Smith.

Bill Callahan can't sing at all but a good 80% of his work is God-tier so it doesn't really matter. Cohen too, come to think of it.

The rest I can understand, but Bryan Ferry has a great voice.

>Bill Callahan can't sing at all
What!?

I'm not saying he is Newsom tier in singing regards, but he can sing and also has a beautiful voice

His voice is beautiful in its resonance and in his phrasing and the warm comfort it brings you in its obvious humanity, but as far as how people judge "conventional singing", he doesn't really do that at all.

That kind of might make him a great singer though, that he has such a unique and recognizable style.

he talk-sings most of his songs.

Well, it's his style and it works really well

Calvin Johnson

Michael Gira

Most singers in rock are not technically good at singing. They may be powerful, have good tone and relatively good pitch.

what makes someone a good singer other than good tone and good pitch? range? plenty of rock singers have good range.

The guy from twiabp and jordaan mason

He sounds like an edgier Lou Reed

I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed. I like Lou Reed!

what is even range? the lowest to highest ptich you can produce?

if so, that's very overrated

it's much more important to be nuanced within your range

Absolute cringe thread. The "objectively good singing" meme needs to die. If it sounds good to the music, its just good singing
