Face it Yea Forums: there is literally no difference between her and Kate Bush. Both of them are industry plants who were signed to major labels as teenagers with almost no musical experience and whose popularities were based more on personality marketing than music.
The only difference is, Billie's voice and aesthetic are fresh and represent something which transcends conventional pop music and subverts the dominant narrative about youth culture.
It involves some Art Pop, but it’s not stylistically of that nature as a whole. Hopefully, she’ll be willing to experiment further.
Brody Sullivan
Man I think Billie Eilish is fucking shit but since when does something have to be "more artistically stunning" than Kate Bush to be considered art pop.
>That shuffling beat >That minimal yet effective production >Heavy dark overtones with an industrial-pop aesthetic >Samples of glass, a stapler, and a dentist drill >Sounds like if Throbbing Gristle made a chart-topping pop song >"Composed in the key of G minor, with Eilish's vocals ranging between the notes of F#3 and B4" Literal genius

Billie's track is awful and Running Up That Hill is one of the greatest songs of all time, but there is a massive difference between a 17 year old and a 27 year old. The Man With the Child in His Eyes is a lot better comparison.

I wouldn't compare her to Kate bush, She sings with that xan'd out slurry voice that's kind of annoying. Her album wasn't bad though

there's nothing unique about this artist even the aesthetic is taken from streetwear and the early 00s post-ironic nostalgia wave

Except that Kate Bush actually wrote her own music and is a genius, and Billie is a fucking retarded zoomer child who can’t speak a single sentence without saying “like” 500 times. Comparing them is ignorant and moronic and egregious slander of Kate, a genuinely talented, intelligent artist. Thinking of Billie Eilish as a “talented female artist” is an insult to women.
Levi Powell
there is a difference though. kate bush is a good songwriter.

Kate Bush lyrics have L I T E R A L L Y been compiled and published by Faber and Faber as poetry. Hounds of Love's lyricism and storytelling is absolutely beautiful and generally avoids cliches, in its vocabulary, phrasing, avoidance of typical metaphors and in its fairly vast inspirations.

Irrelevant because many of the bands you referenced did have top 10 hits, just not those particular songs. And FWIW, Hendrix's highest charting US single was All Along The Watchtower which made #20, but still far above Funeral for a Friend which can't get higher than the 40s.

Rockism: A mental disorder affecting white males ages 25 to 70 which leads one to the belief that the only artistically valid form of music is produced by 3-5 white dudes with a couple of guitars and drum kit. David Gilmour could never come up with anything that Kate’s done. You are all really reaching to try and legitimize why you like Billie outside of Fantano giving her an 8 and you feeling relieved that you could listen to some really boring pop music for some reason everyone loves.
Joshua White
Her first single ‘Wuthering Heights’ went No.1 and was unlike anything around at the time, the videos and live performances were stunning and it’s one of the most critically acclaimed songs of all time with most people saying it’s one the greatest. But yeah, she wasn’t taken seriously.
Thomas Stewart
And given that Funeral For a Friend can't get above #42 and literally nobody but UMG marketers takes Billie seriously...
Hunter Cox
What is considered artistic music was completely different before Kate Bush and she completely changed the ‘genre’ (though it technically isn’t a genre) and the way it is reviewed, admired and appreciated. All of Billie’s music is basically Lana Del Rey demos with awful trap beats or just a boring piano production with no progression. Her lyrics are all just about how boys don’t like her, how she likes boys, how she wants to die and how she’s quirky and has a retainer. She copied her whole ‘aesthetic’ from mumble rappers. Nothing about her is fresh and new. Her and music is boring and uninteresting.
Jaxon White

Kate is self taught and has over a hundred songs written by 16. She finally gets signed after having been rejected multiple times because her demo makes it to David Gilmour, who was on the lookout for new talent. The Bush family didn't know Gilmour, he was an aquantaince of a friend of a brother, that's not nepotism that's just a connection. David likes her stuff so he comes to the farm to meet the family and hear her play. He then fronts the money to record a better quality demo, personally passes it to EMI, Kate gets signed. Kate plays in the KT Bush band in pubs on the weekends to get some experience singing live. She takes it upon herself to study dance just to accompany her music, choreographs her own dances, wears her own clothes etc. She drops a copy of TKI under her dance teachers door with the song "Moving" dedicated to him and he's surprised bc he didn't even know she was recording music. Kate fights early on with EMI over having to use session musicians.
Billies immediate family is literally in the mjsic3 industry and has her lay down already written vocals on an already completed track. She's got ties and friends all over the industry, gets signed with no demo, with literally 0 songwriting experience.
How are these the same at all? This shit is a meme. One got signed based on her songwriting to make music and one got signed based on nepotism and how likely she is to be a star. There were issues with Kates record label because they kept trying to play down her quirkiness and she had to fight with them to even get Wuthering Heights released as a single, they wanted James and the Cold Gun and were trying to sell her as a pop/rock sexpot as you can see in all of her earliest photoshoots as well.
Adrian Hill
Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with Billie using cliches or anyone for that matter, just because something has been done or said a lot, doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s just the fact you try and say KATE is cliche and not Billie.
Landon Foster
>leftypol

Alexander Jones
Billie Eilish >shit-tier vocal range >sings like every indie/ukulele girl >needs to whisper sing so she'll stay on key and sound okay >plays uke only >had a duet with Khalid, another industry plant >relies on clout-chasing to gain popularity
Joshua Ross
I found her new album to be passable. It sounds like something i would have been really into when i was 16. I do like the ballads on the project, namely "when the party's over", and "i love you."It gonna be a project that i rip a handful of tracks and throw into a playlist. Its not a project that id listen to front-to-back, but not many are (despite that being my preferred way to listen to an artist's work). Her brother's work shines through on it, and i can appreciate it without it really being my thing. i give it like a 65/100 for my personal opinion, but i like her personality and "brand".
Also, the whole thing against industry involvement pre-debut makes me uncomfortable too, but in the age of self-promoting and it being easier to grow organically, i feel that record labels are going to double down on in-house talent/cultivating a marketing plan around a "plant" of their preference. Kind of sad desu.
Screencapping this for use in any other thread when "LE ZOOMER KATE BUSH" meme appears.
Benjamin Edwards
What exactly about the album's production is good? I keep seeing the production on it praised, but to me it just sounded inconsistent.
Josiah Stewart
As others have pointed out, it also sounds like every other pop album since Pure Heroine. There isn't anything original or different on there.
Juan Ortiz
how do people fall for this comparing billie eilish to kate bush is an obvious troll people compared fucking clairö, ariana grande, and miley cyrus to kate on here because her and bjork are probably the 2 most respected female artists on here, it's obviously a joke meant to rile people up
Carson Barnes
Some teenagers unironically believe it.
Logan Garcia
I don't think the average 14 year old even knows who Kate Bush is.
Luis Bell
I think it's telling how Billie doesn't even cite Kate as an influence. She says Avril Lavigne, Lana, and Justin Bieber are her biggest inspirations, no joke.
Asher Wood
Personally, i agree in that it was some what spotty, but i did like the production on the tail end of "all the good girls go to hell". The synths&strings kind of referenced back to late west coast g-funk, and i dig that. As well, i like 0:22-1:00 on "my strange addiction". The lyrics are my least favorite part of this section. I like how the melody line rides the instrumental, juxtaposed with the much hated on "indie soft smooth" style that she sings in. The office samples fucking ruin the track for me, imo it was a poor/immature production choice that takes away from the song, but again it might have been funny to Finneas/billie at the time. Not my project, so i cant pretend to know what the thought process was.
Jonathan Lee
I’m gonna talk about how Kate isn’t an ‘industry plant’ as that’s already been done to death and I realize that this is just bait, but Kate has tons of musical experience, Kate could play instruments, dance, songwrite, sing live. Saying Kate’s popularity is based on her personality is insane. Everyone loved Wuthering Heights when it released but people found her live performances, and videos off-putting and very un-cool at the time. Her being quirky and creative irl doesn’t make her personality her popularity, her music was quirky and creative which reflected her and the way she performed it and executed it. Completely unlike Billie Eilish who’s popularity is mainly off the fact that she’s #1-17 and #2 wears baggy clothes that rappers wear but is a girl. Her music sounds like diet-Lorde. It’s so boring, fake deep, and overly meloncholy and tries so hard to be different and quirky (the first song is litereally her just taking out her retainer, Kate would never do something like this, she took her art seriously and knew how to execute her vision and concept, not needing to add in funny sound bites of her being a total ‘goof’ in the studio for relatability/personality-building.), what Kate was doing was unlike anything that had come before, her progressive experimental art-pop shaped a generation and created some of the greatest albums ever made, she’s left hundreds of imitators in her wake, to say what she was doing wasn’t fresh, either shows Kate has now so deeply influenced music now and that you don’t realize she came on to the scene almost half a century ago, or that you simply aren’t educated about music’s history and Kate’s impact, maybe both. If you’re saying it’s simply Billie’s voice (literal voice, or metaphorical voice though?) and aesthetic that are fresh, unlike Kate’s, I say that Billie’s ‘aesthetic’ is completely taken from SoundCloud rapper’s materialistic clothing and Lana Del Rey/ (con.)
David Lee
There are a ton of people on mu who legitimately believe Kate was a nobody industry plant because she met David Gilmour at some point when she was 15-16 and that she was fucking him and hw ghostwrote and ghostarranged all of her early stuff. So that's obviously all ridiculois but people still take bits from that and meme it so much people actually use it as an argument against her
Evan James
Who the hell do you think you are? You’re any kind of artist? Anybody know who you are? Maybe evrybody else wants to enjoy the peace and quiet. This is one of the most important places in North America and who are you? Who are you? You miserable presumptious no talent. You’re no artist. An artist respects the silence, it serves the foundation of creativity. You obviously don’t have the talent. You don’t have enough respect for yourself or other people, or know what it means to respect yourself. In music or any form of creativity. And I’m an NYU fil-school graduate. Sucker. And the School of Visual Art in the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco. You suck. You’re a no talent. If you really have talent, go practice. And then get yourself a gig, instead of ruining the day for everybody down here. You disgrace. You are everything that’s gone wrong in this world. You’re a self consumed, no-talent, mediocre piece of shit. And I’ve earned my right to say it. Okay? In 1975, I walked Bob Dylan up on stage. Who the fuck are you? I knew the Grateful Dead from 1966. Who the fuck are you? You’re nothing. You are nothing. And you will never be anything. Never. How dare you? You miserable, mediocre nothing. Shame on you. You crack a stupid little smile, you little pimp. Go learn to play. You’re flat. You can’t even carry a fucking note. I don’t care about your little horn lip, it doesn’t mean you know how to play. You’re flat. I’ve trained classically, I’ve trained contemporaneously, and you suck.
Ayden Hall
People like Gaga and Lana at least pretend that Kate and Joni Mitchell are their musical heroes.
Jack Baker
That's exactly what pisses me off about Billie so much. Billie is a gentrifier. Not just because she's from Highland Park, but because everything about her personality screams "spoiled white girl". Doesn't help that she LARPs as deep and socially/politically aware when she's neither of those things. All her flexing would at least be understandable if she was a poor black kid from the hood who can now finally enjoy a life of which they were previously deprived. But in Billie's case, she's just a suburban brat with industry-connected parents who can brag about how she's slightly richer, like she's always had everything she could ever want but now MY DREAM IS COMING TRUE Y'ALL.
Jackson Hill
Because the label is throwing their full support behind Billie, promoting the hell out of her

Of course they would have. John at the very least.

This. You have to ask why it seems as if the entirety of the corporate media is on Billie's side, so much so that big name CEOs tweeted about how much they loved her album the day it was released.
Cooper Anderson
I honestly believe that this new generation of Bjork/Kate Bush copycats doesn't even know where the style originated from. They probably think Lorde is the originator.
Michael Anderson
To be fair, Paul has a much broader musical palette than John did. He's dabbled in everything from British music hall to traditional pop to jazz to hard rock to folk. John seemed to not be interested in much outside his childhood music.

Paul likes Kate too John probs would've said she was rubbish
Noah Moore
Dylan also had entire teams of ghostwriters. Your point?
(con.)Lorde/Marina Diamandis. Her voice is just really quiet (Lana), or her just using her head voice like she’s talking (Marina/Lorde), and most of what’s she saying fits right in with your ‘dominant youth narrative’ right now, (omg this boy likes me it makes me feel so bad and worthless) (omg I wanna die) (I’m a bad bitch) (omg I’m so much better than all of you, fuck off) (i’m so quirky! A.k.a. I wear a retainer, and make fun of guitar riffs and then laugh and leave it in my song), if you’re saying her song ‘xanny’ subverts the ‘youth culture narrative’, because it’s a song that’s anti doing drugs, I’d say that I think the meaning of that song is shit just like any song that encourages drugs, because it’s basically her saying omg all my friends have drug addictions, ugh I’m so much better than that’, other shitty messages also run rampant in her song like ‘wish you were gay’ “you don’t like me?! I wish you didn’t feel physically attracted only because you weren’t attracted to my gender and therefore made me feel better even though it would make your life much more inconvenient and difficult”. The whole ‘listen before I go’ is the musical embodiment of those Facebook posts that say ‘like if you cared if I killed myself, ignore if you wouldn’t’. Meanwhile Kate on her debut album was singing about classic literature and interpreting in song (Wuthering Heights, Them Heavy People) , one which written as a suicide note by a sister who is in love with her brother, becomes pregnant with his child and kills herself so her brother isn’t exiled from the family (The Kick Inside), one song that is simply an ode to an instrument (The Saxaphone Song, songs about religion, the teachings of religious idols, and the desire to learn as much as possible, while still young (Them Heavy People), a song about how men are able to retain their childish ways while being adults and how women cannot (con.)
She’s been in the industry for around 3 years though. She isn’t brand new and her musical success has grown naturally

(Con.) songs about how women can survive a lot more than men because of the fact they can survive childbirth, and they should use this to help men, not use them, songs like Strange Phonemona about how coincidences are always occurring but we only realize they are a tiny amount of the time. I would say that all ‘transcends conventional pop music’. And even then there’s nothing wrong with conventional pop music or the ‘usual teenage themes’ in Billie’s music, it’s just that you try and say Billie is unconventional and defies the youth narrative and that she’s better than Kate’s when in reality it’s quite the opposite and this comparison doesn’t make any sense as Kate was a grown woman when The Kick Inside released even if she was a teenager when she wrote most of the material. Kate wasn’t even popular in the U.S. until Hounds of Love. Even then The Kick Inside is not the reason Kate is regarded and loved the way she is, even though it is a fantastic album and much better than Billie’s. Hounds of Love, The Dreaming, Aerial e.t.c. are. Not to mention that Billie doesn’t even WRITE HER OWN MUSIC. I’m tired of every one suddenly riding Billie’s dick since Fantano gave her an 8. They are nothing alike other than the fact that her music is most likely influenced by Kate seeing as Kate influences all modern music, without Billie probably even knowing. And Kate is infinitely better. Goodnight.

No actual legitimate artist since the rock era started came up through a massive multimillion dollar promotional push by a record label. The way it worked was you'd gig in clubs and your tapes/EPs would get passed around by word of mouth, local DJs would go "Hey, I kind of dig these guys." and then a major label would take notice and sign them.
Today of course you have Youtube but the underlying principle is the same.
Charles Rodriguez
I wonder why Yea Forums somehow expects teenage girls to be the summit of maturity and being able to deal with criticism?
Landon Morris
>Today of course you have Youtube but the underlying principle is the same. But then, Justin Bieber was discovered on Youtube so your entire post falls apart.
Cooper Cox
And I never claimed he was a plant. Yes, they did "discover" him and he had a total breakdown from being unable to handle social media bantz.
Jaxon Davis
All that proves is teenagers most of the time are too fucking young and immature to handle this level of fame and what comes with it, especially when you're spoiled brats like that whose parents gave them everything on their Christmas list every year and told them how special and wonderful they are.
Jason Stewart
Bieber was a literal child trying to act like a big tough adult and the Internet decided to take a collective shit on him. If he'd kept his mouth closed a little more often, he would have been ignored just like all the other fly-by-night tween pop stars in history.

Vandalize it with "CORPORATE-CONTROLLED INDUSTRY BITCH".
Cameron Thomas
Shit title, shit artwork. It suggests some sort of mid-2000s Hot Topic/emo/scenecore music, but the actual songs are the most generic pop cliches imaginable.
I don't even like emo shit or anything, but at least there was some edge/angst to it. Doubt she's singing about her parents being abusive fucks or wanting to slit her wrists in a bathtub.
Jack Butler
Kinda weird how she hangs around druggies and sexual deviants. I guess she also platonically gets her toes sucked by nude men.
Post this image to the Billie thread on /leftypol/. I double-dog dare you.
Anthony Cooper
>Doubt she's singing about her parents being abusive fucks or wanting to slit her wrists in a bathtub How could she anyway? This spoiled LA brat has never had to worry about anything in her life except what video games she'd get for Christmas.
Easton Sullivan
Lol you know kates early demos are out there from before she met Gilmour and her early style is all over them. Those were the demos that didnt even make it to EMI. You keep saying this on mu hoping people think its true when there's nothing at all to back it up. Gilmour didnt even produce her 3 song pro demo for EMI he just fronted the money for it and passed it to EMI. Someone else on mu keeps saying teenage Kate was fucking Gilmour too but there's no reason to think that and there was never any gossip toward that. Why do you guys just make shit up? Should I start a rumour that Billies brother molested her and is now blackmailing him into making her a star?
Brandon Butler
She has lyrics in Bury a Friend and Before I Go which openly talk about her wanting to kill herself.
Pathetic, I know. Melon gave this trash an 8. Let that sink in.
Why even call him Melon anymore? After all that he has done, he doesn’t deserve any kind of nickname.
Aiden Rogers

>yfw women don't have brains and even a teenage girl can't make music without referring to sucking dick, bondage role play and fucking guy's dad's >people pay money for this
>was in a band with a manically depressed, suicidal musician and artist who was poor and destitute as a child and can't relate to any of the people in his life because they don't care and are basically retarded >kurt hated him to the degree that it actually ended up in some of his licensed biographies >manically depressed guy mainlines heroin daily because he fucking hates the music industry and his life and the fake people around him >eventually blows his fucking brains out >thirty years later and his drummer he basically found on the street is comparing a teenage girl that alludes to sucking dick and fucking niggers to his long dead friend because someone at his label told him to if you think anything grohl says should be taken as law then you deserve to be fucking shot twice in the back of the head and have the wound filled with all the dollar bills he currently worships
Jesus Christ, Kate Bush fanboys are a bunch of fucking idiots.
Yes, Kate Bush is a plant. Calling someone an "industry plant" is not the same thing as calling someone a bad artist.
Jaxon Miller
How is she a plant? Everyone says something different
Eli Diaz
I’m tired of this nepotistic twat’s face clogging up this board.
Ryder Ramirez
Leo Miller

Shes not though >An 'industry plant' is an artist who has label(s) backing their movement but present themselves as an organic presence in the entertainment world.
>The common definition of an industry plant is an artist who has a Major/Indie Label backing their movement but presents themselves as a “home grown start up” label to create a pseudo organic following.
Kates people never did any of that, there wasn't even press for her before her album was released and noone ever tried to hide or lie about any of her circumstances or anything
Aiden Davis
I lately realized a trend when It comes to defending shitty art/artists on the internet, the same happens with star wars tlj fans, firts they try to defend the artists they like, but when that fails, they turn and shit in the paralell artist from a previous generation

Can someone explain to me why people are listening to such terrible shit?
She's talented. Her lyrics are relatable. Her aesthetic is odd but it works for her.
I've no complaints other than I hope she won't get hurt by the industry.
Blake Morgan
Well, it looks like Kate Bush fans are stooping to a new low and just denying all the evidence.

Shame about America, here in Canada her albums were gold or platinum

weird to think canada and usa once had vastly different pop charts. Theyre identical now.

Kate Bush's music was good, unlike Billie's. Billie's music doesn't seem particularly significant to me.
