Okay this my chance. Can someone explain to me the value / appeal of listening to the Beatles in mono?

Rubber Soul is overrated trash. Let it Be was lousy. White Album has way too much filler.

It's how they recorded and mixed all of the albums before Abbey Road.

Okay so by mono it just means different inatruments are panned entirely to one side or the other. I knew that. For some reason I thought people were downloading versions where there was no panning and each instrument was exactly equally in left and right. Which didn't make sense to me.

It depends your audio hardware, I think. Monaural recordings just mean that there's only one audio channel, and some headphones (and/or audio software? I can't recall) will interpret that information as just one of two stereo channels, panning it to one speaker. Other headphones will correctly output it to both speakers.
