I don't know about that. I think tab still holds a useful place when a performer isn't expected to improvise (and therefore doesn't need any of the functional information communicated by score), and either there is a lot of specific fingerings you want for timbral reasons, or else the fingering is generally tricky to make work at all (for instance in a dense polyphonic texture), then using tab (with beams and stems) makes absolute sense.
