I think Hi, How Are You is sad in its crushing despair that I haven't heard elsewhere. It's not an album that leaves you sobbing, but one that leaves you crushed.

this guy has one of the saddest stories around

hadn't heard this so thanks.

Thanks for these man, really fucking into both.

I just read his Wiki and it was a serious gut punch. What is it with guys like him, Drake, Molina etc. just dying so miserably

Dream loss > Alien Observer
AO is good but DL pulls you through sludgy heaven

>Molina
Nice to see someone else who knows of his work. I guess their tragic lives helped them to make such good music. It's unfortunately not surprising that the deaths they had were as tragic as their time alive. Still sad overall though

What a stupid font and color scheme. I am literally just noticing for the first time that this album cover has writing on it. Low contrast, looks like it was drawn with the pencil microsoft paint. Hopefully they didn’t pay the guy who did that.

>Now I see it doesn’t help to understand how the pain became world sized, or how I realized life is losing friends.

Absolute masterpiece written by a sixteen year old boy who commited suicide after recording it.

Oh boy i forgot about this. Brings back memories.

Molina?

Jason Molina. He's an Alt-Country who died from organ failure after years of alcoholism. I'd recommend checking out the Magnolia Electro. Co album as it's his most famous work. The opening track, Farewell Transmission, is a masterpiece.

It's the only album that legit makes me sad. Carrie and Lowell, Closer, Pink Moon and others let the beautiful parts shine through, but Hi, How Are You leaves no room for a comfy feeling.

I agree. Depressing albums like Pink Moon and Electro Shock Blues close on surprisingly optimistic notes. Hi, How Are You tricks you with Keep Punching Joe as you think Johnston is ready to take an initiative in life. But that expectation gets subverted with the last line of "I take it all back" and segments of the album being repeated at the very end indicating the return of depressive sorrow. It's easily the most harrowing album I've ever listened to and I love it for that.

Hell yeah I've never seen this posted on Yea Forums before. CF Bundy and The Kursk (if you don't know about the submarine disaster look it up) are fantastic. There was also an excellent music video made for the kursk: youtube.com/watch?v=_y6hwrfPehs

It’s a downer classic for sure but this has it beat imo. It’s crazy to think they both started releasing home recorded music around the same time in Houston.

Opening line of first song on album:
>Everyone I love is going to die and I will die as well

Pet Sounds

Some are profoundly sad, but I always feel better afterwards. It's an expression of love. Am I the only one who gets that vibe?

Yeah but it's more self-aware and lighthearted sad stuff. Hi How Are You is just fucking pure isolation and depression.

I agree. I've got OPs album in queue. I guess I don't really listen to soul crushing music that is sad rather than angry.

>I've never seen this posted on Yea Forums before
How new are you?

Eh off and on for last 4 years. I only got into his stuff a year ago and I guess I just never noticed the album art getting spammed on here since it doesn't really stand out.
Happy now?
