Zoomer here. Im a bit fadcinated with MJ.Was MJ really that huge in the 90s and 80s? Hearing thriller and beat it is nice, but i dont think it warranted such a devoted cult following rivaling a dictator.
I only remember him being a boogeyman and I imagined every child molester to look like him.
>Was MJ really that huge in the 90s and 80s? Yeah, he was. He took over MTV in the 80s.
Easton Thompson
I never understood how music videos where ever entertaining
Charles Edwards
not so much in the late 90s I never really understood why his music got so popular. the spare production and everything seem to go against everything traditional.
Yeah, your favorite music accompanied by visuals? Why would that ever succeed?
Andrew Stewart
obviously when you look at em now, but as a kid who grew up watching those videos it was captivating and inspiring. he simply had a great likeable personality opposed to many other bland pop stars of his time, but obviously overtime we've seen that image get tarnished by psyop like leaving neverland. MJ was revealing too much truth about the industry as he was a tortured kid. read into his talks about SONY
Remember when he burned his hair in that Pepsi commercial? Probably a combination of that + shitty wig work.
Andrew Kelly
As a late Gen X'er, Michael Jackson wasn't one of those artists you remember discovering, he was so big that you just already knew who he was from infancy. Him and Madonna were on the TV and in the news constantly throughout the 80's. By the 90's, though, Jackson was pretty much just made fun of for all his weirdness, idiosyncrasies, and mishaps. His music was definitely not cool with young people with the emergence of grunge.
Josiah Bailey
they were when people didn't have computers
Samuel Moore
I fucking hate zoomers so goddamn much. MJ was so big that you will never comprehend it. There has not been an artist in your lifetime that has even approached his level. We're talking a musician who was one of the top 10 wealthiest people IN THE WORLD.
Kevin King
It's hard to believe now but yes, incredibly huge during the eighties. How many times have you seen a 20 minutes long album ad on tv broadcasted live all around the globe? He was quite likely the most famous person in the world.
Sebastian Cruz
What do you do for fun? I still get stoned and watch music videos in the current year. They're just fun.
James Watson
Last night I was at a meeting for a county-wide youth charity that gets a pot of money each year to hold workshops, social clubs etc for 11-25 year olds, and once a year all the people who use the charity are invited to vote on the agenda for that year (I'm currently the oldest member and due to leave in a few months when I turn 26); right now the majority of the kids are around the 11-16 mark
I proposed that we make access to arts and culture a priority, for those unable to afford travel or up-front costs for hobbies and get excluded from music, film, photography, etc.; I argued it would lessen loneliness among the poorest and reduce the burden on overstretched mental health services by giving people more outlets for their stress etc.
it was voted into the bottom 4 out of 20 measures behind such important, focused aims as "education", "end capitalism" and "smoking" (how many teenagers smoke these days, I thought it was all vapes?)
Jaxon Robinson
>His music was definitely not cool with young people with the emergence of grunge. Really? Dangerous sold almost as well as Bad. Jackson appeared to have retained every ounce of popularity he had in the late 80s right up until the first bout of accusations.
Music matters like that to like 5-10 thousand people worldwide. To everyone else it's a secondary thing at best.
Adrian Evans
I even offered opening up my point to include sports, religious gatherings and other such aspects of culture that can bring people together and/or improve peoples' wellbeing through creativity, fitness and/or socialising so that it wasn't simply based around what I like, but nope no change
Jason Sanders
I'm a very early zoomer and just saw thriller for the first time a few weeks ago. it was pure fucking kino and you should just neck yourself
Mason Sullivan
I'm also an early zoomer and this opinion is gay
Asher Campbell
Kill yourself
Jackson Lopez
What other entertainer in History was so famous that they had a Dinsyland Attraction created to showcase their music with state of the art 3d technology.
Why are you asking here? Practically everyone here is a zoomer. Prepare to get a bunch of responses from people born in 1996 who think they know what the 90s were like.
Isaiah Turner
Thing is that back then people tried to make music videos more than just a performance, but a short film. Sure there's music videos out there these days that are like that, but it was more common in the 80s thanks to MJ.
Jaxon Jenkins
>What other entertainer in History was so famous that they had a Dinsyland Attraction created to showcase their music with state of the art 3d technology. rivers cuomo
Bentley Edwards
>Was MJ really that huge in the 90s and 80s What the fuck.
Landon King
>Zoomer here. Im a bit fadcinated with MJ.Was MJ really that huge in the 90s and 80s? Hearing thriller and beat it is nice, but i dont think it warranted such a devoted cult following rivaling a dictator. Yes but there was also Madonna, George Michael, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Culture Club, Iron Maiden. Mr T.
Elijah Rivera
why did he turn white?
Asher Walker
EEEEEOOOO
Nathan Rivera
Mental illness
Cooper Young
boomer here it was great MJ was everywhere and having actual good music being popular was the best
Carter Stewart
Vitiligo
Camden Mitchell
When you hear a song you like don't you imagine the artist performing it in your mind? The video brings it to life.
Joshua Scott
Tell me about Michael, why does he wear the nose?
Ayden Richardson
I don't think Thriller is his best. Watch Smooth Criminal to see his true talent.
King of Pop, nigga. He wasn't just the biggest artist in popular music, he was a phenomenon. The release of Dangerous in 1991 and his worldwide tour in 1992 was his peak.
Asher Robinson
He wouldn't look too bad here if he lost the lip stick and bleached his teeth
Jaxson Parker
>The release of Dangerous in 1991 and his worldwide tour in 1992 was his peak. No.
Wyatt Hill
The peak of his popularity I mean.
Henry Garcia
Also the false rape accusations + he simply stopped giving a shit about music. I mean after the 90s he only released Invincible and after that he pretty much retired until This is it
idk about peak but I do love this song a lot, the production on it is so clean, one of my fav tracks by MJ. He looks so odd here though, his nose is ridiculously tiny, also what is with that lip filler?
I'm still heartbroken from Leaving Neverland, I wish I could be in denial of it but I've done way too much research into the allegations to be able to deny it at this point. His music will always have a place in my heart though...
Jason Sanders
His 1992 Dangerous Tour was his peak performing live for sure
>I've done way too much research into the allegations to be able to deny it at this point. If you did your research then you'd realize he's innocent of all accusations made in that documentary. Get your head out of the sand.
Jonathan Bailey
They literally found nude photos of one the friends he hung out at Neverland with when they investigated him (Jonathon Spence)
Why would he own a nude picture of a little boy he hung out with?
There's no proof that photo ever existed and Jonathon Spence said he was never molested.
John Walker
It's literally filed by the police into evidence
Samuel Watson
How about the FBI conducting a 13 year investigation and finding literally nothing?
Jacob Cruz
and never submitted in court.
Dominic Myers
They didn't do a 13 year investigation, they just helped the police agencies when requested. This is a myth.
Parker Rogers
I would vote education over what you proposed. I think what you proposed was good, but in my field of work i see people everyday who were failed by our shit education system and we need to improve it.
Carson Rivera
Just like your "nude photo" of a kid the police supposedly found. Itz all myths
Joseph Fisher
The prosecution wanted to submit to the court but couldn't because Jonathon Spence wasn't testifying.
Aiden Lewis
Kill yourself
Benjamin Gonzalez
Get outta here Wade
Joseph Flores
He took over the fucking world, not just MTV. Michael Jackson was the most famous and influential human being to ever live in earth, and his level of fame and power will never be replicated due to numerous cultural factors.
Lucas Jenkins
wrong again you fucking idiot.
Julian Roberts
Jackson is the most recognizable music artist of all time and the one with the widest crossover appeal. You go to the hood tomorrow and niggas won't know who the Beatles are or who Freddie Mercury is, even after the film. I know, I was that kid years ago, but everyone knows Michael from the hills to the fucking hollows, or at least everyone used to. I don't really know how zoomers or whatever generation of shitheads that's after them is currently perceiving them.
An user said it earlier in the thread, but I don't remember learning about Jackson, he just always seemed to have been there. I do remember exactly where I was, who I was with, and random things about the day he died, though. I think his death marked the end of an era and is the best point of division between post-modernism and whatever the hell we're in now.
Carson Foster
Like Drake might be in that place now? The Rock? Adele? Taylor Swift? Combined they aren't even close to the level of fame that MJ had at his peak. (not sure they're as famous as Michael Jordan was either.
Michael Flores
There are far too many entertainment options nowadays for that to be duplicated - most people used to consume the same stuff, because options were somewhat limited. For example, a TV show 30 years ago getting like 4 million viewers would be considered a disappointment. Drake is one of the most popular artists, but he doesn't have anywhere close to the same impact.
Brayden Diaz
Everyone knows who the Beatles are you shit head
Jonathan Thomas
oh my god is michael jackson hee hee hee hee
Connor Cooper
I remember when the 'Black or White' video premiered on tv. Jesus Christ that shit is surreal.
at the end there's like 5 minutes where he dances in complete silence, massages his junk a bunch, smashes the word 'nigger' with a crowbar, then turns into a cat and walks away.
William Turner
Niggas don't know the Beatles. It's the truth whether you like it or not.
Hudson Powell
Right, I bet black people have never heard of the Beatles. Right.
Cooper Campbell
Early zoomer here, and I'm surprised you don't remember the resurgence in popularity he had around his death. I first got into his music after that and I'm sure I'm not the only one my age who did.
Henry Reyes
>bottom 4 out of 20 nice
Joseph Perez
>at the end there's like 5 minutes where he dances in complete silence, massages his junk a bunch, smashes the word 'nigger' with a crowbar, then turns into a cat and walks away.
>very early zoomer Is this some subtle way of saying underageb&?
Adam Adams
People approach an artist's music differently when they have a larger than life persona. Lady Gaga's music is really meh but she was just as huge for a couple of years
Asher Kelly
Everyone knows how Nevermind famously knocked Dangerous from the charts. By the early 90s, MJ was definitely not cool anymore and viewed as a relic from 6-7 years earlier and Janet was far more popular.
Camden Robinson
Michael's 90s albums started to get too political and were mostly just whining about how we're so mean to black people. I guess he thought he needed to compete with Public Enemy or something.
Anthony Carter
Thriller was like the album of the decade bar none. Everyone and their grandma knew those songs. Shit was massive and completely inescapable back then.
Brayden Hernandez
based and redpilled.
Jose Taylor

>obviously when you look at em now, but as a kid who grew up watching those videos it was captivating and inspiring. he simply had a great likeable personality opposed to many other bland pop stars of his time Madonna was always too douchey and cynical for her own good.
I just watched it on your recommendation. I am truly grateful.
Yes except the nigger part. He does smash up a car and a window, then a hotel sign falls on him. He's also intermittently screaming/roaring like a panther the whole time.
You probably watched the cut version. In the uncut version the car window says 'go home NIGGER' or something like that. Linked here:
Easton Robinson
MJ was the greatest, simple as that
Imagine listening to Another Part of Me and not getting goosebumps. Shit fucking slaps
Nathaniel Myers
haha zoomers these days. i watched MTV all day when i was young. it was awesome. Eminem music videos were the best.
Juan Price
you have all been 'trollered'. trollering was an ancient internet meme back before t series, tiktok and fortnite, where older users would 'trolling' eachother using fake and stupid stuffs. people born after 2000 are beginning to learn this 'troll'; technique themselve. you need to watch out!
Brayden Gomez
>Was MJ really that huge in the 90s and 80s? Bigger. He was beyond massive. The only person to even come close is Bieber, and Bieber doesn't have the mystery surrounding him, or the elite dancing.
>Hearing thriller and beat it is nice, but i dont think it warranted such a devoted cult following rivaling a dictator. 1. A cult is just a religion without political power. A cult is smaller than the following MJ had. Much smaller. 2. Listen to Off the Wall. It's better than Thriller, but both are 10's. Shake Your Body DOwn To The Ground is also a killer single he did with his brothers. Recommended.
Benjamin Lee
Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s my parents didn't let us watch MTV but we still knew all about Michael and Madonna and heard all their songs and their drama
Easton Mitchell
>Sshh I like to pretend mu is one of the few refuges left for oldfags typical newfag mistake: "oldfag" means someone who has been on these boards a long time, whereas "olderfag" means an user who is old. I'm both. I'm old like pic related and I first showed up here in the first year, about 9 months in. inb4 why are you here, old fuck? >The real question is why are YOU here? I'm old af, I've gone out and sowed my wild oats 100x over. I've earned my time doing fuck all, and I choose to spend it browsing here. But you? You should be out doing young man shit: working hard through the day, prowling the night, fucking and fucking around. Spend your days and nights sitting in front of a screen like an old man? Why would you?
>Bieber Come on, you're smarter than this. If the Internet hadn't collectively decided to hate him/turn him into a meme, he'd be as forgotten as countless other tween idols.
