>Do you think jazz is still popular today Not really. The Cuphead OST is like Kind Of Blue for the Yea Forumsfags, where it’s usually the only jazz album they listen to. >What’s your favorite kind of jazz Experimental Big Band, Free Jazz, and Avant Garde Jazz >How did you learn about jazz My parents and research.
Jordan Thomas
>muh vidya embarrassing
James Phillips
How is jazz not popular? I think we're living a renaissance
Go back to r*ddit
Kevin Smith
I wouldn't really say Cuphead counts as "Jazz".
Joseph Adams
Jazz fusion is best. I learned about it from Yea Forums. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew is the obvious starting point. The check out his other works, and works by other musicians who played with him. Herbie Hancock has a lot of good albums.
Andrew Ward
Jazz has seen a resurgence in popularity in the past 5 years, but mostly through acts who are dumbing down the genre to appeal to hip hop fans, like Kamasi Washington or most of the London scene players.
There are still people making great jazz music, but it’s mostly a niche genre, listened to largely by other jazz musicians. Some jazz artists still making great music: Steve Lehman, Matthew Shipp, David Binney, Craig Taborn, Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer, Miguel Zenon
Justin Myers
>Experimental big band Can you rec me some?
Julian Cox
so basically only boring old men playing acoustic instruments and sound the same as jazz 60 years ago are good but people actually trying to make jazz that can sound new and relevant to people are dumbing it down?
kys grandpa
Joshua Jones
lmao What’d you do, google one of those names and listen to the first 30 seconds of whatever track happened to come up?
Almost every single one of the artists listed there incorporates electronics into their music, they just do it in a more creative way than “mediocre jazz solo over chill hip hop beats.”
Grayson Harris
>"I love jazz fusion! Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, the list goes on!"
Sebastian Hughes
S hut up about "great" whatever. Music is more than you can even THINK kiddo I tell u right now
Anthony Lee
Floral fury reminds me of the music the escaped dancing circus bear from Tom and Jerry dances to.
Joshua Collins
Obviously the list goes on, but it makes sense to start with the famous ones. Genre tourism is a good idea.
Kayden Watson
based
Chase Gutierrez
>experimental big band, free jazz, avant garde jazz Poseurs out
Grayson Green
Not OP but here are a few names to check out
Charles Mingus(Mingus big band) Sun Ra(spirituality and space) Stan Kenton(Foeget the song but he composed one where the entire band improvises all at once) Seatbelts(see ya later space cowboy)
I think it's getting to be a little more popular than it ten or even twenty years ago, I don't think it'll ever be as big as it was
I found out about it through Jojo and started by listening to Weather Report, I then found some fusion (mostly Weather Report, Zappa, and Bitches Brew) in a giant prog torrent
My favorite is post bop and fusion
Colton Jackson
>needing a music forum to learn about the two most famous jazz musicians in history
Grayson Nguyen
Horace Tapscott
Aiden Jackson
Also not a bad idea to give people more to listen to of they want to. Its important to note that listening to these two musicians will open you up to pretty much all other jazz fusion artists of the time.
Miles Davis Herbie Hancock Chick Corea Gary Burton Bill Evans(Notice how a lot of bebop, avant-garde artist, mostly pianist, saxophonists, drummers and guitarists were drawn to fusion. Why do you think that is?) Freddie Hubbard(start here or with Miles) Wayne Shorter Frank Zappa? Jaco Pastorius
And yes the list does go on. Look up your favorite 50-60s jazz artist and see if they dabbled in fusion. Some of the most relevent and still active musicians gained a lot of popularity in fusion era. Also note most jazz musicians will argue fusion is not jazz.
Asher Carter
attitudes like this almost killed the popularity of jazz in the US, but thanks to stuff he hates there is a resurgence of interest in jazz with younger people
Christopher Gray
Fusion is where it's at. Casiopea, Weather Report, and even Level 42 are all preferable to the "standards" that typically get namedropped.
Gabriel Thomas
>Do you think that Jazz is still popular these days? At all. It's a dying genre and let me tell you as much as cockhead fans like the OST, they don't actually listen to jazz, though they do like pretending they do. >What's your favorite kind of jazz? Cool jazz, free jazz, bebop and fusion. >How did you learn about jazz music? Dad
Eli Young
who cares how popular music is?
Grayson Gomez
people who understand that popularity means more recordings and gig opportunities and allows the scene to flourish
jazz musicians especially benefit from opportunities to play live gigs as often as possible
Jack Johnson
>Is jazz still popular these days? no, normies just use pic related as background music
Noah Cooper
my stepdad is a jazz musician and works for the city orchestra and his side gigs used to be plentiful but now they have largely dried up except for the occasional boomer wedding. jazz is kill
Jaxon Thomas
That’s why most of the good jazz musicians live in New York where there are still plenty of gig opportunities without having to sell out and dumb down their music.
Levi Fisher
1980s Yea Forums: Kenny G is keeping the genre alive with bringing so much popular and commercial attention to it.
Anybody who doesn’t like Kenny G is an elitist who is responsible for killing jazz.
yeah, um Herbie Hancock is name-dropped in the movie "Tommy Boy" with Chris Farley. Not sure why you needed Yea Forums to learn about the dude. Dig deeper my friend
Henry Thompson
Isn't Kenny G a jazz legend? He is way better than that Coltrane guy, his music is just better.
Nolan Smith
I like west coast jazz a lot, check out Howard Roberts. Charlie Byrd is also great, but has a more Latin feel
Joshua Rogers
you are a tastelet, boring cunt
Samuel Lee
As a natural contrarian, when I first read about Kenny G, I wanted to like his music. I started listening to his most popular album (Breathless). I thought the intro wasn't too bad. I kept browsing the web while I waited for the music to start, not paying much attention, and it wasn't until about track 3 that I realized there was no intro and the whole album was that boring.
Jacob Robinson
He sold more albums, so he must be better right? Coltrane and Shorter and all them were killing jazz until Kenny G started making it popular and relevant again.
Andrew Mitchell
Cuphead is a homage to the 1930s Fleischer cartoons which were scored with jazz soundtracks.
Think Betty Boop’s Minnie the Moocher with Cab Calloway. The jazz in the game is a throwback to an old style of jazz, not unlike when you watch a period peace.
Cuphead is probably not a good example of new territory in jazz being explored today
Ayden Morris
Are there any modern albums with old style jazz music?
Elijah Edwards
What are some albums with this feel? youtube.com/watch?v=yvxaYNv7fsI Unfortunately most of the other songs on the Nat King Cole album don't have the same happy upbeat feel as the first one
Alexander Garcia
why don't you just listen to the old albums
Colton Hill
Cause I want to listen to modern ones
Connor King
lmao wtf is wrong with this board
Oliver Wright
Wtf Are you afraid you won't get as many (You)s when talking about them on Yea Forums or something?
Nicholas Peterson
>Do you think jazz is still popular today not really, people still make jazz music and people listen but you will probably not find it being played outside of a jazz club or like in an academic sense
>What’s your favorite kind of jazz earlier fusion, post bop, free-jazz, modal
>How did you learn about jazz family mostly brought it to my attention from bringing me to clubs than i just explored from there
also the whole cuphead thing is dumb its some good throw back big band but like said the majority of people who listen to it just listen to that for jazz
Gavin Phillips
Bad sound quality.
Nathan Watson
ive only seen a drop in audio quality is pre 1930
Noah Sanders
any bossa nova albums yall can recommend
Brody Rivera
that OST absolutely fucking slams though, much better than 95% of jazz (and 99% of music in general) posted on this board. it's a miracle that takes you back to the times before modern jazz canon which often consists of just old dudes forcing you to listen to flaccid shit with imposed emotional confines hidden as refinement and tasteful reservation
Cooper Diaz
Every time I see you post it’s more embarrassing. If you’re older than 18 you should really reevaluate your life.
Henry Richardson
i agree
Austin Ramirez
Most pre-1950s recordings sounds obviously worse than modern recordings.
Brayden Wood
go back to keith jarrett you morons, you will never experience music properly
Grayson Cruz
I get paid to play jazz. How do you experience music?
Elijah James
>I get paid to play jazz ok, wow... sorry... sorry, I'm really sorry, I wasn't expecting that like at ALL... I didn't know who I was talking to, I got ahead of myself and started voicing my opinions based on years of listening to this music, digesting it, giving my own self fully to take my time and listen to what various artists have to offer... but now I know it all was for naught because this guy, this guy right here... he plays jazz... I'm goign to be direct - have my full apologies for what has transpired in this thread, I am not worthy of presenting myself publicly on an anonymous site about anime girls, not worthy of even posting this button labeled "post" right below here. I promise this will be the last you see of me, for I am not the one to play jazz for money and therefore I should submit myself to your authority. I didn't mean any disrespect, honest!
Lucas Russell
i just disagree with that the cuphead ost is better than 95% of jazz, its definitely not bad at all just better than 95% of jazz and 99% of music is a big statement
Charles Martin
>same baaaaaad and boooriiing new goooood shove a minature nuclear warhead into your ass and detonate it you faggot
