Well, rap is not music for one thing. I mean, it isn't music, you know, it's talking. That's what is says "rap." "Rap" means "talking." It's not music, it's talking in meter, it's got rhyme, and it's got...it has meter, it has rhythm. It's not music. It's...you know, it's okay. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, I have no problem with it. It just isn't music, you know. And people who get to be great at rap are not great musicians, they're just great at rap, you know. There's no road from rapping into music, you know what I mean? And, music is something you can get better and better and better at. I don't know if you can do that with rap. I don't know if whether it has that kind of space in it or that it leads into infinite possibilities. Music does.

unironically based
Rap isn't music and shouldn't be classified as such. It should be put into the category of spoken word.

This is true but most won't admit it

A licky boom boom down

Garcia was absolutely right. This is the reason that no rappers have ever managed to make the move into more purely musical realms, unlike rock, jazz, and electronic musicians.

Based and Deadpilled

Dr Seuss should suffer greatly for the hell he hath wrought

>Zoomers will NEVER know the satisfaction of learning your favorite song on an instrument and gaining a newfound appreciation for it

What about XXX?

that's literally the worst example you could've used

So the instrument behind is is what, completely meaningless?

He does mumble rap, but dabbles in simple mid 2000s indie shit and even has a track reminiscent of Cali reggae type shit

Better than drakes pop shit

He's wrong, but he was a great musician so who really gives a shit. It's pretty clear from this quote that he doesn't really understand what music is, however

>more purely musical realms

wtf does that even mean

Rap is largely trash but "[x genre] isn't music" is intellectual garbage

Rap and associated music has enough musical elements to be considered music. Rhythm, melody, harmony, tambre. He’s just speaking of his subjective belief of what music is. I’m not contending with you. Just reaffirming.

true but the Grateful Dead is fucking BARELY music either

The instrumentals in rap are mostly samples or very simple sequences of beats and melodies that have literally no soul or taste. Practically worthless.

They all give up when it takes longer than 5 minutes to perfect it. That's why they like their synths, they can just play random shit and make noises they like

the instrumentation is music. rapping itself isnt. putting the two together makes music.

he wasn't talking about hip-hop, he was purely talking about rapping
