How unreasonable would it be to imagine that he gets paid to shill albums? Unlike Pitchfork (owned by Condé Nast) or any other music media publication he isn't regulated by any standards authority, it strikes me that if I was an upcoming artist signed to an indie label or whatever, and I had a new album coming out, one of the best ways to market it would be to pay Anthony Fantano maybe $5000 to give it an 8/10, after all he has so much influence online. Bands that come to mind are Death Grips, Xiu Xiu, and this latest Billie Eilish review (still not sure if April Fools joke).
