Singing

Are there any vocalists/singers on Yea Forums? I've been practicing for a couple weeks now, working on singing from my diaphragm, but I still feel a kind of soreness to my throat after a few songs.

Is this normal? I want to be at least a sustainable singer

You shouldn't have any pain or soreness that quickly and much more importantly at all. Even when screaming* with proper technique you shouldn't feel discomfort.

ah-bloo-bloo

So it sounds like I'm not engaging my diaphragm when I sing, apparently. Like I could probably go for a full set at this point, but I'd be sore.

Do you know of any good techniques that have worked for you, user?

Be very mindful of what you are doing with your throat while singing. If you tighten your throat too much, you'll want to force out the sound. This lead to pain and soreness very quickly. I suggest to try singing with a more "rounded" sound where the vowels are very open (ahs and ös) . It will make your voice more resonant and also help you sing with your diaphragm to get volume without hurting yourself. This is is just something I have picked up from being in choir when I was in high school.

I never hurt my voice but I can sometimes get out of breath while singing for a long stretch of time. To be fair I haven't actually "sang" since high school choir. I just do shitty karaoke now.

it shouldnt be hurting
you might be doing more damage than good if thats happening.

best advice i got from a vocal coach was that when you are learning dont concern yourself with your own volume or being loud enough.
Concentrate on the technicality(pitch and timing, etc) at a comfortable and doable level. Even if you can only do it quietly at first.
Your voice will become louder on its own through practice without you having to push it to become louder. But fucking up the notes wont be corrected without yoyr concious effort.

I've got decent volume and pitch, but I think I'm pushing too hard to achieve those things. Should I be singing above a talking volume?

>Should I be singing above a talking volume?

you shouldnt practice at anything above whats natural and comfortable while still being able to stay in the right pitch.
The volume will come on its own.
When i first started i couldnt sound the way i wanted to or hit certain notes unless i sang at a very low volume. I just always practiced that way until eventually your voice just becomes louder on its own without any discomort or strain.

Friendly bump

Are you warming up beforehand?

Does anyone have tips for sounding less nasally?

Advice on how to be more relaxed when singing would also be very helpful.

Thanks Yea Forums

sing more with vowels and less consonants

in general this guy does a 'fine' job explaining singing techniquie compared to the other youtube shlock but singing is an internal process and very individual so a teacher is something that would be useful

Is it essential to warm up? Not OP, just wondering.

yes definitely. Just like other music or exercise

I can sing better than you that's for sure lol

>warming up for exercise
Found the 5'6 beta

I sing all the time when I'm drunk.

im not familiar with that one.
Did you write it?

Not essential, but it would definitely help fix OP's problem.

When is warming up not essential?
Not warming up is the one way ticket to slowly destroying your voice
Furthermore for complete beginnners it makes a million percent difference

If I'm singing a karaoke song out with friends I'm not going to the restroom to do lip trills like some weirdo. I suggested OP warm up anyways.

Nobody going to upload a clip of them singing?

lol bitch I sing to full audiences of millions like I knew I would by now when I was young you can find a clip of me just by looking my name up lol

catch 22: the post

I only sing backup vox

This is what makes everyone stop learning singing. People saying you should sing without strain, but nobody tells you how to do that and in the end those with an already good singing tone keep learning
