Sex Pistols were a solid band, and Never Mind the Bollocks is a great album.

The reason punk fans get so aggressive about them is because you get a lot of assholes who insist that the Sex Pistols were the be all, end all punk band, and then dismiss the entire genre as secondary to them, which is idiotic. While Never Mind the Bollocks is a very good, solid album, there were many albums that came out around the same time that were actually a lot better, notably the debuts by The Clash, The Damned, X-Ray Spex, and Wire. There were also many more experimental, creative bands that were frankly doing much more interesting things, like Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, and many others. The other thing is, punk was really a huge cultural/musical shift that changed the way rock music works - it was pretty much the root of that shift. And frankly, the Sex Pistols were virtually disconnected from punk as a culture, beyond their very earliest days. Basically, punk was this artsy yet nihilistic club sound in New York. Then Malcolm McLaren brought that culture to London, and it clicked with kids there, who were listening to bands like the New York Dolls, as well as the local pub rock scene with Dr. Feelgood, Eddie & The Hot Rods, and stuff like that. The Sex Pistols were some of the first London scenesters hanging around McLaren's shop. But then almost immediately they became rockstars, so they were hanging around in hotels, doing drugs like every other major touring rock band. Meanwhile, really interesting things were happening in the punk scene, with Crass and the anarcho-punk scene, and the hardcore scene in America making punk DIY, grassroots, and honestly more meaningful. People who worship the Sex Pistols as the definitive punk band are really just showing their ignorance to a lot of interesting stuff that frankly has a lot more substance than the Sex Pistols, who were never really anything more than a competent mainstream rock band that wrote some strong singles.

Best Brit punk band ever. Dont come @ me. They are. One album, said fuck you all, then went back for more of the dosh wo any new material. Fuckin genius. Johns a great guy, too. A real gentleman, but an edge sharper than anyone ive ever met when hes in a mood. You should see him heckle a comic. And NMTBHTSP is a great, great album.
