I want a guitar with humbuckers as a second instrument, and I've always liked SGs, however I'm torn between a Gibson and Epiphone. I'm not a professional musician, don't really plan to be one and I'm not even in a band. I just play for fun in my bedroom. If I am not a professional musician and I want a second guitar to cover more sound possibilities what would you recommend? Would the difference in quality be relevant to someone like me? I've heard the pick ups aren't amazing, but I don't mind swapping them out, it's more about the build quality of the whole instrument and how it plays. I'm not sure if purchasing a Gibson is worth it for someone like me.
Find an Epiphone and play it in store, shop used w/e. The main issue with Epis are the consistency, some times they are shit, but there are plenty of great ones. You can replace the pickups etc later, so I'd focus on condition and quality of the neck mostly. Either way don't buy a new gibson, qc is horrendous and they are overpriced as fuck. I'd look for one of the higher end epiphones used.
Honestly just go in the store and try out a bunch from your price range if you're not concerned about the label. As long as you like the sound should be good.
Jack Johnson
>gibson lol
they're finnicky about tuning stability if the nut isn't perfect, they break easily (Sometimes in the official hardcase), and they charge custom fender prices for mexican fender quality.
professionals who play them get the privilege of having the best of the lot picked out for them and polished up into the shiniest turd. everyone else plays a "period incorrect" fender with humbuckers, PRS, ibanez prestige, ESP, etc.
Unfortunately I don't have a store nearby, it's why I came here to ask, I have to do everything by internet research which sucks. But thanks, for now I'm leaning towards the Epi.
Chase Bailey
try wearing headphones
Grayson Reyes
Listen man gibson is going broke for a reason.
Save yourself the QC crapshoot and go find a place to try them out in person or order from a more consistent marque like PRS. PRS SEs and schecters are also a good choice for your price range (same factory).
Look for shit online that let's you return it then. No idea where you live though.
David Price
it was a magical day🌈
James Lee
Get a used Gibson.
James Smith
How's QC on Harley Benton or Agile? I have 2 PRS SEs that I'm very happy with(especially the Tremonti...that thing is is a beast and I got a limited run color used for almost half the price of one new)
Agiles are made out of the same factory right? They're about the same price too yes? Am I getting more bang for my buck with those?
Elijah Thompson

Thoughts on Zoom G3X Vs. Zoom G3XN ?
I read some reviews and it sounds like you can stack more pedals on the G3X than the XN, but maybe that's changed since the last review?
How do you guys think it compares with other effects processors in a similar price-range like the boss gt-1?

I was looking for a new amp today in a music shop and really started to like the Fender Mustang GT100. Is the LT25 model similar or is there anything I should know before buying it?
Is this board just for contrarians? Rock is bad, metal is bad, PRS is bad, Gibson is bad, tremolos are bad.
You window lickers realize every one of these opinions is stupid enough to lower your credit score, right? Fucking wannabes

I have a mid-70's peavey 260 i usually play through using a Sholtz X100 as a pre, but there's a short and the cone is popping out to full and staying there. Stuck using a Line6 Spider I CL'd for $80 right now

No, but flamed maple tops are pretty lame. And I'm saying this as someone who has a PRS SE 277 a with flamed maple top.

Solid color matte finishes only
Lucas Bennett
I don't like matte, because it becomes gloss in some places eventually anyway.
Zachary Clark
PRS is soulless

epiphone are cool enough for the price you can get them. Modifying them is cool because you don't get scared to screw up smtg
Once a week I jam with friends for about 4 or more hours, every other day I play along to jam tracks until my hand gets tired or hurts or I get bored. Remember to play both major and minor as well as modes and different genres. Lately I've been playing more jazz, blues, hard rock kind of tracks but I used to play psychedelic and funk a lot. Most of the time I'm trying to figure out songs, made one using bossa plucking and just recently made a power chord heavy phyrigian track that I'm gonna bring to the jam on Thursday.
One thing I've noticed with phyrigian is that it's very repetitive in its classical form (middle eastern shit) but you can interject it into metal pretty easily and it doesn't sound too bad.
Hmmm, not sure about that body though. The pattern on the headstock is fine but the whole body having it + straight lines for the neckthrough makes it kinda tacky.
Brandon Morgan

Am I retarded? I'm trying to restring an old bass but when I turn the tuning key for the low E counter-clockwise, the peg starts rotating clockwise. It rotates the opposite way of all my other guitars. Do I just turn the key the other way? otherwise my string will end up coming at the nut at a bad angle
Carson Peterson
bass is not for you
Gavin Cooper
>I dread the day where I get handed a guitar without markers
Most of the time those still have small markers on the side of the neck. I'm not sure i've ever seen a neck without fret markers on the side. Even fretless basses have them.
Jeremiah Long
You should try practising with your eyes closed, user. In a few weeks it won't be a problem.
Jason Reyes

Also my bass gets noticably louder as i go higher on the frets

So far I've got combining a 10 string with 1 of these.
I went to a guitar shop today to try some out even though I can't play. I liked Telecaster appearance but it felt heavy. Les Paul feels awkward to hold and they didn't have any Mustangs which I wanted to try. I don't like Ibanez because they seem very edgy. What should I get? Are certain guitars better for different genres?
Justin Taylor
Guitars dont matter too much between genre What matters is pickups Humbuckers are better for metal and the like The only time body matters is in semi hollowbody guitars which are those big things with the f holes They usually get a fuller tone and are good for jazz but can have massive feedback
Logan Thomas
Dude just make yourself happy and get a Gibson SG! The money you spend on it will drive you to learn how to play it.
Ryan Kelly
>$10 of electronics >a $20 metal box >$70+ of hand soldering and small batch production labor costs because somehow proper mass production isn't good enough even for established brands because while it's good enough for most consumer electronics, that would wreck massive amounts of important personal data or be nonfunctional if the circuit was ever a little off, mass production is somehow bad for your "tone"
Someone explain the pedal industry to me.
t. loyal behringer customer
Play what you like. There are no rules in music. Just remember the amp is well over half the sound and don't forget to try out all those knobs and switches on the guitar itself.
And then sell it a year later when you've figured that you like something else
Luke Garcia
Is that a CBS tele or some other brand? I notice that the heel/neck mount to the body is longer which is usually only a CBS thing. Either way that looks good and the lizard is a handsome bastard

I bought this squire strat as my first guitar and I'm enjoying it so far but I want to replace the strings as these feel shitty, what should I get anons?
Ask for student gauges (10-46). Chances are you're using junior gauges currently as most guitars ship with them (9-42). Alternatively ask for hybrid student gauges which are thicker on the bottom for more bass and drop tunings (10-52).
Ryan Gray
So i decided that I'm going to buy a Player Jazzmaster. But what color should i get?
hello lads after learning all basic chords and minor versions and getting the hang of the caged system where should i look next to expand my chord arsenal?
Christian James
how do you balance playing in multiple bands?
Ryan Foster
Have you tried this in a store? It's extremely muddy even for a humbucker equipped guitar. Feels like the tonepot is rolled down to 7 at all times.
Isaac Sanchez
>Play guitar at my house, on my own >Sound appropriately good for how long I've been playing >Go to a party >Bunch of guys at a table passing around an electric guitar and arguing about who should play it, no one wants to. >Give it a go >Get nervous as fuck and completely fail >Owner takes it off me and starts playing Iron Man
Fortunately there were no girls around. But how do I get used to playing in front of people? Is it a legit tactic to just go to the guitar store and practice there in front of the other customers? Should I start trying open mic nights?
If you are shit alone, you are shit in public (simple as)
David Rodriguez
You need to be able to play the common chords (power, major, minor, suspended second, suspended fourth, dominant seventh, minor seventh, major seventh) all over the fretboard: every voicing and inversion. When you have those down, move onto the jazzy stuff.
He can always swap the pickups.
Tyler Robinson
Who do you live with? Start by casually playing a bit when you're watching TV with them or whatever. Then just join a band, you'll play in front of your bandmates and then eventually on a stage.
Jack Martinez
But I'm way shitter in public, how do I get over this handicap and start being equally shit in both environments?
Jaxson Watson
First you breath in, then you work on your social anxiety and low selfworth as a whole. Only then think about ever practicing guitar especially working on repertoire of songs for public playing. >He can always swap the pickups. Not a big fan of that sentiment personally but it's up to him. When buying a guitar for 500+ dollars I'd expect to like it as is.
Jaxson Miller
I live in student halls, we don't have a TV room. We just have our bedrooms, the bathroom and the kitchen.
Sometimes I do play in front of my best friend and that's okay because he's someone I really trust.
Noah Watson
1000+ dollars*
Dylan Stewart
So join a band.
Best way to approach is buy a guitar that feels good and sounds good unplugged. Then If you don't like the plugged-in sound, replace the pickups.
Kayden Mitchell
>and sounds good unplugged This but unfortunately most stores I've been to string guitars up with 9-42 which sound like ass both unplugged and plugged in
David Brown
This is true.
Lucas Martin
People who never gigged should refrain from giving advice because it's obviously always so retarded that it doesn't even warrant a fair reply back informing them of their retardation

actually unironically this Most people in these threads are just rich kids bragging about shit they just play in their bedroom. Pretty much everyone listening to music live in a bar or whatever won't be able to tell the difference between a 200$ Squier and a near identical 1200$ Fender, and won't give a shit either way bar extreme gear autists.

Charles Howard
You guys need to move out of your parents' basement and get jobs so you can buy some decent gear.
Liam Nelson
I don't want a job because that means giving up valuable time that could be spent playing my tax-payer subsidized Squire.
it depends on the bass player and genre. you only really need the first 6 frets to play anything, you could play a lot of things on the first 3 frets.
>Also my bass gets noticably louder as i go higher on the frets cant help you with that tho
Michael Young
Do you guys have a definitive list (for beginners) of the best makers? Which makers should I stay away from? I’m looking for a guitar to make dream pop/shoegaze and maybe even noise pop. My budget is $900
There are plenty of black metal virgins in their late twenties, don't worry you'll be in good company

Joshua Collins

Christian King
good bass playing is really hard to achieve just like you could pick up a bass and play in few hours you could do the same with guitar
Samuel Myers

Jose Murphy
I hear music man is good. I can attest to the quality of PRS, their SE stuff is good.
At 900$ you might be able to get entry level American but I'm starting to think it's a meme marketing ploy. Factories can be great or shoddy in any country.
Jaxson White
What you want is a Squire offset (any will do, take your pick, if you're going to take playing shoegaze seriously you'll end up replacing parts of it anyway) then take the remainder of your budget and invest it in effects pedals.
That sounds like a MIM Fender Jazzmaster or Telecaster to me.
Brody Wood
learn jazz tunes that you like find out why you like them chords, melody etc. try writing your own music with the knowledge fail then try again.
Jordan Clark
interesting
Juan Thomas
ffs just buy any guitar in your price range if cheap make it playable grind, then play whatever guitar you want because of said grinding. i had to play an acoustic bass few a nights ago with the action being light years high. not saying that i'm *insert bass master* but i put some time in.
Anthony Torres
Sir, could you shop an angry tough guy face on this esp black metal?
my bass is finally here and i looked at the studybass.com site i dont have the extra money to spend on a sub for his site can anyone give me good alts for learning bass? I am downloading the folder from mega.nz now

Hal Leonard's "Bass Method" is in the MEGA link you're downloading, take a look at that.
Noah Wilson
scott's bass lessons has some decent free content on youtube, not really a step for step program though
Adrian Hernandez
>Hal Leonard's "Bass Method" okay ill start with this is it a step by step program? i havent played an instrument before so im not sure what to expect
okay ill check those out once i feel like i know what im doing

Yes, it starts with the absolute basics. It's a complete textbook series that comes with audio so you know what you're supposed to sound like.
Jacob Price
>so you know what you're supposed to sound like. thank fucking god this is exactly what i needed thanks a bunch user

I would also recommend getting a teacher. Just $20 once a month to make sure you're not making stupid mistakes will save you years of headaches.
t. someone who is self-taught and held his pick wrong for the first year.
Jonathan Torres
BUT I'M A CREEP
Easton King
You could just youtube stuff too but ya.
Cameron Murphy
Yeah, but YouTube can't give you feedback on your technique. We're trying to eliminate mistakes that won't be noticed by the player.
For example, my girlfriend does this thing where she anchors behind the nut even when trying to stretch to a distant fret. It's bizarre. She also has the standard flying-pinky problem. On top of that, she tucks her elbow into her stomach and sometimes locks her wrist at ninety degrees - both great ways to get RSI.
I doubt YouTube would be able to point these things out to her as quickly as ten minutes with a teacher.
Joshua Torres

Liam Martinez
9-42 is the best gauge, not a student gauge
Don't fall for the lies about thicker tone.
>when interviewed, steve vai recounted that he had to practice for hours a day
Connor Turner
I was giving advice to an absolute beginner who has just bought his first bass.
In your case, drill your technique with a metronome every day and see a teacher every now and then for a checkup. Pink Suhr's practice routine is posted regularly.
And perhaps you should listen to your teacher and learn some theory.
Ian Evans
Nobody in the audience can tell if it's a gibson les paul, PRS SE, or chinese HH strat by the sound, sure, but nothing plays like a strandberg.
I've been using the metronome for easier rhythm stuff now, I'll try using it for *everything*. But man, it's fuck hard following a simple metronome and not just the backing track or whatever when your fingers have to move a million notes per minutes.
Tyler Taylor
BATTALIONS OF FEAR

What is the best series of Fender Stratocaster? I've never owned one, and have no idea which series to look into before I purchase one. Ideally something under $1k, and without noiseless p'ups.

Second-hand CIJ. Jap versions have far better QC than even MIAs. Just change the pickups.
Jackson Davis
Whatever happened to Sammy?
Oliver Long

If I plug pic related into my PC, run the effects, and plug the other end into my amp, will it play work?
but given the fact that it's an old model of gutiar you must beware the mojofags who will try and tell you their "legendary" old model is the best, up to and including the ones who make "ultra vintage" custom guitars. at the first hint of fretboard material influencing "tone", or the word "tone" at all really, turn tail and run before they infect you with bedroom warrioritis and you end up stuck playing sweet child of mine over and over.
Any with common sense knows hes full of marketing and bullshit. I wonder when the last time he got laid was.
Blake Howard

Unreal. You may not like their personalities but they do seem like genuine blokes.

Asher Parker
So nobody has a personality unless they're marketing something?
Noah Miller

Yeah, jcum keeps changing his name to avoid filters. Apparently he's less intelligent than Sammy in this respect, who posted anonymously for a long time for the same reason.

Yeah thats the post. Not sammy and tremolo systems are cool and youre too poor to get that esquire.
Camden Hughes
It's like 300 bucks. I can afford that alright, littlefoot.
Kevin Brown
Who are you talking to?
Luke Phillips
Then what guitar am i thinking of?... Maybe the broadcaster. Why the esquire tho?
Carson Reed
I don't like tele neck pickups and P90 teles are limited runs. The performer HS is too expensive for me considering I won't use it that much. Mainly interested in the tele bridge with 11s or 12s for an Eb tuned guitar
