Phil Genesis is best Genesis

>Phil Genesis is best Genesis
Cringe and bluepilled

no, but that song is definitely amazing

The disparity between phil genesis and something like Lamb Lies Down and Selling England is kind of unbelievable.

The lack of Steve Hackett is even more pronounced than the lack of Peter Gabriel

wrong
Yes, Phil's stuff is a lot better than both of those albums.

>Phil Genesis is best Genesis
Eh, it's not even close. They were a good pop band and all but the Gabriel albums are legitimate masterpieces and a lot smarter.

I mean, there is a lot to like about Genesis. The Peter and Phil eras are completely different and are constantly changing/evolving. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.

Just to be clear, I love Gabriel's stuff as well but it can be a little much at times. With Collins, Genesis adopted more pop sensibilities, but I still would not call them just a pop band. They never stopped making prog.

This is great btw

>They never stopped making prog.
Pretty much nothing about 80's Collins Genesis is prog, lel. It's fine to like it but compared to stuff like Firth of Fifth they were simply on a different caliber creatively and compositionally.

Also, why does no one ever talk about Steve. He's just as important as Peter G. with the entire sound and atmosphere of earlier Genesis.

Duke is a prog album
Invisible Touch is a prog album disguised as a pop album
Genesis has prog songs on it as well
>Home by the Sea
>Mama

And ABACAB. Almost the whole album.

Abacab is the worst thing they ever recorded though, so who gives a fuck anyways

Abacab is inconsistent, but has a lot of great songs in there. Man on the Corner is excellent.

Nah, I think Abacab is even worse than Calling All Stations, because at least CAS has The Dividing Line, Man on the Corner is just a really forgettable track to me, the only single moment on ABACAB that I "kind of" like is Sarah Jane, and even then it's very lukewarm, but it's really the only song on there I wouldn't classify as a complete bore or unlistenable

Yea its definitely not their best. But there's something about Dodo/Lurker. Its hilarious.

>not liking the title track

Why do you hate fun so much user?

I'm not as big a fan of Lamb as a lot of other genesis fans, but I still admire its ambition, and about half of Trespass is boring filler, but otherwise you're correct.

I think it's a long shot to say their 80s stuff is prog, but they approached pop music from a progressive sensibility. They were still smarter and sharper than your average flavor of the month synth band.
