I think his abusive father and backwoods environment screwed with him a bit. But I also think he was probably a little autistic, and he realized that being outrageous was a way to get a lot of attention. He was talented, but if he hadn't done all that fucked up stuff on stage, he would've been just another forgotten 80s punk musician.
