Hey guys I want to buy studio monitors for maximum 500$ per pair What are things to look out for? Is there a model you cannot make anything wrong with? Are 500$ enough? I dont want to upgrade later on
Justin Fisher
If you can find Mackie HRs for that price than do it.
Levi Wright
A friend who works in the drum department of a big music store told me that his colleagues always talked about Mackie HRs but hes no expert So Im going to buy these, thx dude
Bentley Gray
Whatever you get, try to find them used. Take care of them, and if you do want to upgrade later, you can re-sell them for a similar price
John Cook
They're great and the sweet spot is really wide for nearfields. The 824s go almost low enough for sub-bass too.
literally just don't start a new song and stop being a dickhead
honest question, is everybody who asks this new or is this a legitimate problem that people have after there first year or two? Because i cannot relate
y i k e s
Eli Baker
Where did you get the impression I'm trying to be quirky?
Benjamin Morris
Stuff them in all into one compilation with cohesion and be praised as being artistic.
>cannot relate DeMarcus you have barely finished any tracks, you just give up and say you're done.
Christian Baker
not demacus buddy
i dump shit ideas and only keep songs that don't feel like i'm forcing it. it still ends up being 2 or 3 finished songs a week
Camden Russell
How do I develop an individual 'style'? I want my songs to be thematically consistent enough to be recognisable as my work even if you hadn't been told. But at the moment I seem to be making stuff in many different genres and can't seem to streamline it into a single project. I thought about releasing different styles under separate aliases but that seems unrealistic given I can't even manage to maintain one so far
James Walker
consistent sound design, consistent recording... process. Like your les paul and drumkit in the same room every time. That's obviously sonic though
David Bowie across his career had a (mostly) consistently recognizable way of writing chords.... as has Trent Reznor for most releases (and his finger print is obvious in the sound design (or I guess what he also says yes too from his collaborators))
I mean it's a lot of things. Being real with yourself, ask what makes your music unique if anything. What do you do consistently? Just make a point of making sure it's recognizable every time
idk man I make a lot of different genres too but I haven't worried too much about that.... if the approaches to those styles are different enough it's just a bitch to do and i'd rather try new things lol, like trying to make my ambient music connected to my boom bap to my rock is just too much.
Nolan Morgan
Also I told you to stop replying to Demarcus. The only way for the Demarcus meme to end is for people to stop referring to him completely.
Wyatt King
And I told you I would destroy /prod/.
Jordan Roberts
>he said some dumb mean things to people oh no /prod/ is under attack D:
because he has a disgusting personality, critically bad taste in music, makes even worse music himself (well if you could even call it that) and is a stupid nigger.
Also he's always rude and ungrateful, turns every discussion into a pity party for his problem that he doesn't even try to solve, and derails the whole tread. Don't waste yor time on him. It makes no difference and he doesn't deserve it.
Also his idea of theory is literally just using a scale lol.
Brandon Torres
My taste in music isn't bad.
Nathaniel Johnson
>turns every discussion into a pity party for his problem There shouldn't be a discussion in the first place. I don't mean for it to snowball, I just ask for feedback.
Delete this please
Oliver Morris
Yes it is lol. Fucking musicals and shitty contemporary rappers. musicals are pretty advanced in terms of tonal language (especially Bernstein) but you can't even appreciate that shit, you're just a nostalgic faggot and also a regular faggot (for liking musicals).
Ian Lee
its too late even if it was deleted it would still be archived
>I don't mean for it to snowball, I just ask for feedback.
You keep saying this but its just not true. Every time someone criticizes you harshly you say "OMG I'm going to kill myself!". Do it bitch, we could really stand to care less.
>. musicals are pretty advanced in terms of tonal language (especially Bernstein) but you can't even appreciate that shit Why do you think that? Based off of what? I asked for the 50th anniversary blu-ray boxset of West Side Story one year for Christmas. I might have the OBC on vinyl too but I don't have a working record player.
Because people ask or some weird baseless shit, I'm just supposed to ignore that?
Because you're fucking tone-deaf. You don't even know what's happening in that music, you just find it appealing. Besides anyone who likes musicals or theoretical reasons will come to prefer Opera and classical in general which are more advanced still.
>You don't even know what's happening in that music, you just find it appealing. That's how most people listen to music. Why do you find that so annoying?
Don't act like that's exactly how that went down.
Nolan Hughes
lol
Trying to assign blame shouldn't be indulged any further, it doesn't matter
i made shitty french house of of communist daughter instaud.io/3uv4
Sebastian Young
>THEN KAKASHI 10/10 meme man
Brayden James
because if you're listening to West Side Story for the unique tonal/modal ideas and you feel intimidated by classical, that's one thing. If you listen to it because you just like it, well then you're a flaming homo.
Thanks. Dumb fat Americans. I don't understand how a grown adult can seriously dislike all vegetables.
William Young
Fresh produce doesn't have enough HFCS in it to satisfy their addiction.
Ryder Sanders
how much time did you spend making all of these edits
Nathan Butler
I'm scrolling /r/comics and doing them as I'm posting them. Most of the time is in finding something that fits /prod/. The edits themselves take less than a minute.
Matthew Ward
this shit is easy as fuck dude lol
thank you for your contributions
.......... guys i just accidentally played the audio captcha
it read about synthesizers, google is scanning the page o___________o
I know but i just wished they'd at least not be so brazen about it
my heart rate just shot up over something so stupid I can't take these digital eyes everywhere FUCK
make them yourself!
Evan James
Modes piss me off so much -- does the context change depending on the chord/bass? Does every chord change send you into a different mode?
Leo Ramirez
If you can't understand modes, you're literally retarded. But yes, technically every chord change evokes a different mode and generally jazz musicians know that you play Lydian over the IV, Dorian over the II etc...
Josiah Edwards
I didn't really understand modes until I started building them into my improv playing
think of it like this: the key of the music tells you what notes are 100% OK to play (i.e. the scale in key) chords typically fit in the key, but they have different root/bass notes root/bass notes tell you what the focus of the chord is in the context of the scale modes of the scale give you somewhere to shift your focus to when the root/bass note IS NOT the first note of the scale (i.e Ionian)
so basically, yes, the context changes based on the chord/bass the point of following the mode is to make sure you can outline the chord properly without leaving the scale you don't have to go to a different mode, but if you want to outline the chord/bass properly then you should probably change modes
>know that you play Lydian over the IV, Dorian over the II Why complicate things like that? Why not just know what (major) key you're in? I still don't understand why you don't just know what (major) key you're in and shift your focus based on the chord being played without having to know that now what you're playing is dorian or lydian or whatever. I'm a classically trained pianist so maybe that's why my perspective is different... The only thing I can think of regarding modes is that it may be easier to understand (temporary or permanent) key changes within the context of a piece.
Thomas Mitchell
I'm not a faggot, please explain what the first panel is
Luke Torres
I don't really know enough to make any, I just save them so that I can find them again as I gain the ability to understand what they mean.
so are these just gonna be shitposting threads from now on?
Dominic Edwards
>so are these just gonna be funposting threads from now on?*
Sorry, Autocorrect.
Benjamin Russell
It's saturday night and the thread is usually dead at this time, so we might as well just hang out and have a little fun.
Tyler Evans
>why you don't just know what (major) key you're in and shift your focus based on the chord being played without having to know that now what you're playing is dorian or lydian or whatever
Yes, that's exactly what modal playing is meant to accomplish and you might already be doing it like most things in music theory, they're not rules you're supposed to follow, they're just meant to explain a concept that just "works" you can say shit like "oh, I'm focusing on this 5th note of the scale when I'm playing on the ii chord" and it has a specific feel to it, modes are just how you can properly describe that idea
>Great music is born from an artists's passion. This energy somehow manifests itself in the music and elicits an emotional response in listeners. If 300 artists before you have used the same synthesizer preset as you, why should anybody care?
... that's actually solid reasoning though lol also you're getting pretty cancerous
just why dude
Gavin Rogers
That's right though you absolute god damn idiot.
Cameron Cox
That's why only absolute faggits use pianos. 1000s of people have used that preset before you and you'd have to be creatively bankrupt to consider using one now.
Landon Campbell
Shoulders of giants?
Gavin Peterson
>pianos >"that preset"
what are you even saying
Liam Martin
You really get a kick out of being stupid don't you?
So syncopation basically refers to the velocity of notes and changes in velocity build rhythm which can you do by sidechaining or actually just leveling the velocity? Why do you all shill this gay book for grannies so hard
In which order should I read these books: Schoenberg - Theory of Harmony Schoenberg - Fundamentals of Musical Composition Schoenberg - Structural Functions of Harmony Persichetti - Twentieth-Century Harmony: Creative Aspects and Practice
Leo Thompson
>instaud.io/3urQ Mix is dogshit but you're on some weird shit right now-- I get it but it hasn't got that something.
Adrian Wood
Well I gotta go sleep now. Anyone got more cheat sheets? I really like reading things that make ideas sound simple.
Sorry for the late reply mang, I like everything about it except the "brass" style synth, I feel like the filter sweep of it is too much and contrasts badly with the organic sounds of the rest of the pierce.
Idk if this is just a thing for hip hop beats but I'd really like a little more structure other than >drums over the sax >no drums over the sax Give me a bridge or a build or something. You could add a whole layer of tension by just introducing some hihats before going straight into the verse. The energy is kinda there but theres nothing that'll keep someone listening for a whole 5 minutes when the beat is like that (sorry if I sound too critical). A simple filter automation over the sax could give it that mysterious vibe since the notes for it are already there and it would be even another layer to play with.
The vocals are really in-your-face and overproduced, turn them a bit down, put some reverb and mod effects on it. The synths sound a bit too dry, change them for a bit more organic string sounds, like a mellotron
Jackson Clark
If that's really trap it's probably the very first trap beat that I actually like since I started coming to /prod/.
Lincoln King
More compression than on a Lil Ugly Mane x Impossible Nothing collab, I can actually hear rest of the instrumental losing volume with every hit of hihat, and Future's chants. Otherwise it's pretty good, the kick and bass tones are great, the snare is generic, but I don't care because I also use the same fucking Lex Luger snare in mine lmao Mine's here Well not the classic trap, more like what you'd hear from Scarlxrd or other screaming Soundcloud rapper edgelords. I mean I sampled Merzbow and Prurient in it
I hate this infographic because it acts like Beethoven wasn't the master of this kind of thing.
Anthony Cooper
>overproduced Is over-pronounced the word you were looking for? What would overproduced even mean in this context? If anything the vocals are underproduced -- you're even telling him to add reverb and shit.
Great. It even still supports 32 bit plugins. It was designed to be as clear as possible with everything accessible from one screen so you don't have multiple windows and menus to dive through. Perfect for a beginner.
Bentley Robinson
You already got your feedback you double-dipping twit.
John Brooks
Why would you think that? The meme daw starts with the first letter of the alphabet.
I mean actual feedback, not some lulzy roast for its own sake. What's the fucking point of this thread anyway?
Jason Lopez
are there versions of it that are completely free without the 60 day trial?
Levi Cox
Just close the box that asks you to pay and everything still works... I feel like I'm iceskating on one of Pluto's moons that's spinning around really fast and every revolution I see an imposing spacecraft getting closer and closer. What were you going for?
Ayden Diaz
Wow. That was a beautiful interpretation.
I was experimenting with granular sampling, specifically on an icy trap beat to create a balance between sonic clarity & sonic confiscation. Figured it was a success so why not ask others out there what else can be done with the abstraction, with almost a nonexistent response. What if I made an abstract hip-hop "beat" over a seemingly dying trap beat? Very weird stuff. Just making stuff weird brings satisfaction to my prod shit.
Thanks for asking.
Zachary Cox
Too much compression, EQ, lack of dynamics
Carter Richardson
Oh, and if you're wondering what software I use, it's FL Studios (11)
Matthew Murphy
Oh. I was thinking you used LittleGPTracker (V1.1h_043)
Logan Howard
Ah, I know FL Studios is what basic bitches use to produce. There must be so tools here I should check out to broaden my prod shish-cabob. Merely used Gross Beat, & Fruity Granulizer. Basic ass stuff. First time seeing that tool uttered.
Jaxson Watson
^many
Andrew Reed
Anyone have experience with this book? Did you find it helpful? What level would you say it's aimed at?
Hasn't someone already shared a download link for it?
Owen Hill
I made the mistake of giving them my email address a couple of weeks ago for a contest that supposedly gave out a few of those. I didn't win, and I now fully expect to start receiving penis enlargement spam, which to be fair, I need much more than the book.
But other than that I don't know. It gave me an impression of being for beginners, and if I had to buy a book like that I'd go for something more "guaranteed". I wouldn't spend the money for it, especially when the Dance Music Manual is easy to find for free online (or buy it for not much more if you want a physical copy). Also, I've been reading the articles on Attack Magazine for several years now, and their tutorials are extremely basic, so I'd be surprised if that book was actually worthwile.
Brandon Flores
Hadn't heard of the Dance Music Manual, this is helpful. Thanks
Sounds like circus calliope in a horror movie. Send this to whoever has the film rights to Something Wicked This Way Comes, maybe you'll get a soundtrack gig.
Gavin James
Yeah, I like angsty boi raps. Also "where the bitches at?" "out back in the trash" is a sick hook.
Asher Martinez
what version do you recommend? looks like you're using 2.0. why?
Jack Roberts
v5.973 I'm confused.
Chase James
yooooo this shit actually works
Jaxson Scott
version of reaper, it says 2.0 in the window title
Cameron Clark
Oh, that wasn't my image, silly. I just searched for "reaper ableton theme" and grabbed the first relevant image from google.
Grayson Bennett
Thanks, man. Its just so much fun to pretend to be hard while you're sittin' in some suburban home.
>instaud.io/3uG2 Now replace everything with found sounds that aren't musical instruments but still musical. Pic related is all I could think of while listening to this.
>Now replace everything with found sounds that aren't musical instruments but still musical. why though? >Pic related is all I could think of while listening to this. I don't get it.
I'm never gonna get good I literally have no idea what I'md oing and I can't figure it out on my own I even started reading this shit book and its not anymore helfpul than a fucking YouTube tutorial and now /prod/ wants to ignore me when they're the ones that made me a meme in the first place my only real option is this music production course at SUNY Schenectady and if I need to be in Schenectady I might finally snap and fucking kill myself I can't deal with this upstate hick shit anymore BUT I CAN'T DO IT ON MY OWN and I don't have time to figure it out with my mom yelling at me every day
does the extra compression kill this? i kinda like it better with, but i had been told i should make the song more dynamic and idk if i got it. also thank you to the guy who gave me feedback again the other day, and i suppose thank you to anyone else who gives me feedback on this because i'm really enjoying how it's turning out, and i would like someone to come in and smash it with great detail
Cooper Bailey
Don't sample things that you could make yourself. Sample acoustic instrumentals and vocals, stuff like that.
Bentley Sanchez
>Don't sample things that you could make yourself. What does this even mean? Sampling allows for sound manipulation that would otherwise be less efficient or even impossible.
you sampled electronic music, unless your making a remix, don't do that.
Levi Morales
Why would I want to be in California? And I'm not getting to the other side of the country with 11 cents.
I can't make that myself though?
Caleb Lewis
I still don't understand what is being implied. Are you saying resampling is bad? ...because that's a baka thing to say. Also, when has Demarcus ever posted an anime image?
>resampling i'm saying that *resampling* as in sampling yourself opens up the possibilities referred to by DUH
you can chop, do granular or whatever the fuck to your own music lol
Brandon Powell
Could you redpill me on sample cleaning?
When it's needed? How difficult it is to clear a sample? What's the worst that could happen if I get caught? And what about smaller artists on Bandcamp and Spotify who clearly don't clear their samples?
It's the wild west and it appears that you know this based on that picture. Thank you for the two (You)'s -- I'm still confused as to what's going on.
Ryan Rogers
What was that extremely maximal DAW that was used as the OP image for a few of these /prod/ threads? Every tool was on the screen at the same time or something and it looked very crowded.
Josiah Butler
what do you mean by chop, how are you not able to chop other people's samples
Cameron Morgan
It was probably that fl with all the meme vsts open
I've tried only a handful of daws and honestly fl was the only one that legit annoyed me. Too many menus and pop ups, everything moves. ... comes with great stuff though obviously
Colton Moore
who cares lol
Carter Ross
Awesome idea, user. I just think it's a lil snippet of an idea soon to be fully enveloped.
Nathan Lee
stop being so fucking dense I'm saying you can chop both
The point is the advantages of "sampling" (literally using a sampler) your own original music opens up the same possibilities as using somebody else's shit in the sampler,
I can't fucking take it I'm under so much stress I don't have the focus or mental capacity to take the time to learn anything else and making a shit trap song everyday doesn't feel as satisfying as it used to be I just want tomake GOOD music
My mom is stressing me to get a job or go back to school and just music in general. It takes YEARS of work and promotion to get any sort of recognition in the industry if you don't already have connections or doing something controversial. I CAN'T MAKE THE SHIT I WANT AND EVEN WHEN I'M FINALLY ABLE TO OR CAN BEGIN TO I'M GOING TO BE OLD AND TRYING TO MAKE IT IN AN INDUSTRY THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO BREAK INTO AND CATERS TO TEENAGERS.
That's why you should move to California and suck the dicks of the rich and powerful to work you way into the music insider circle. You've realized don't have to be good to be famous, now you just need to realize your self-respect is holding you back.
Logan Baker
yea I know that feel I think the key is to make music for fun, don't make it for money
Zachary Foster
I... ugh. I rather be good then famous and bad. But I can't fucking do it. I can't fucking focus. And I already had it in my hands. I could read sheet music when I was 6 and I'm an absolute dumbass now.
I'm not white with rich parengts I need to make money
Jason Scott
Lol musicians don't make money honey, only ACTS do.
Aiden Butler
I want to rap and sing.
Xavier Lee
do that then? rap over some of the beats people post here, that would be fun
Robert Sullivan
>he's still doing it after everybody harassed him yesterday
Really? Who the fuck do you think I am? Butterfly from Yea Forums? That Octopus guy?
Nicholas Morgan
Fucking record shit outside you fucking pleb. Gah.
Aaron Flores
Literally whose?
Brandon Smith
most speakers under that price range will be ported. Be aware of what that means and what that will cause in terms of frequency limitation and amplification
liquid drum and bass, 1 hour prototype of the final song on my EP
Connor Roberts
how do i git gud like u bro
Joseph Evans
Seriously how did you make this
Logan Wood
stay off /prod/
dope but something sounds weird about the drums.... mostly the snare
Liam King
>stay off /prod/ where do I go then? Oh God... April Fool's Day has set in
Juan Bailey
Demarcus doesn't even exist. No one is Demarcus.
I don't ghsot you you've never approached me for a collab I don't even know who you are
Lincoln Cox
More like stay off Yea Forums completely. Such a drain on productivity.
Adam Murphy
I like this april fools meme
it's probably not the same thin you're hearing, but I didn't cut the snare sample at a zero crossing so there's a tiny bit of the next sample at the end making a click. I'll have to fix that.
Adrian Kelly
>April Fool's Day Does this mean I can finally reveal the truth that rubber is actually an obscure Serum preset and have people not believe me?
It wasn't an excuse to be lazy it was an excuse to... it wasn't an excuse. I don't know how you even got that. But getting a job is fucking impossible. Nobody is hiring and if they were they don't want a 20 year old with no experience.
I should get a job I just don't care enough
Robert Reyes
Yea Forums is the only socialization I get though
Isaac Smith
no i got a rap verse i wrote to a drumbeat and melodies saved on my phone, can someone turn it into a song or not? it seems hard
Caleb Richardson
>can someone turn it into a song or not the people who will actually take you up on this are going to suck unless you're already really fucking dope man
Kevin James
april fools! haha
Tyler Jones
i guess i just need someone who can put chords to vocals
I've grown up playing instruments my entire life. I can play 9 instruments, and weirdly enough piano was the latest one I took up, which was about a year ago. Literally the second I started playing I knew what to do because my fingers can already do stuff, and I already understand theory.
Carter Morgan
I have never discouraged anybody from pursuing this ever (and i've talked to a lot of lost cases over the years) but jesus christ dude you are such a whiney fucking bitch. LITERALLY everybody goes through what you're going through now, plenty depressed too. Just shut the fuck up and do the work if this is something you actually want to do this
"OHHH I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT" OR WHAT I LIKE"
just figure it out and stop being a bitch
"sigh :(((((("
same but half the instruments. it's easy as fuck when you already internalized the music, it's just muscle memory after that
Logan Peterson
>remember id's??? Yea Forums needs ids Yeah. It would be nice if they added the option to create a thread with IDs enabled, so that the ones that need them (like this general) could have them, without the anonymity of the whole site being compromised.
If /prod/ keeps getting worse like it's been doing for the past few years I wouldn't be opposed to everyone tripfagging for a while to see how it goes.
Leo Scott
>the option to create a thread with IDs enabled That's actually a great idea
>tripfagging Way too far man
Aaron Barnes
I mean, what do we have to lose? Might as well try and see if having a trip can give the posters some accountability.
But now that I think of it, most of the thread-shitters are those who already have a recognizable identity, and people could just switch between tripcodes that have a good or bad reputation (or post without one at all, since it wouldn't be enforced). Plus, in case we wanted to revert back to posting anonymously it would be too hard to convince everyone to drop their identity.
Yeah nevermind, this isn't a good idea.
Ian Reyes
I sampled myself playing guitar and then cut up the chords how is it so far clyp.it/dtaujjw3
Jayden Morris
well good for you? I guess.
I'm exaggerating I already queued up a few piano videos I'm gonna watch take notes on practice with tomorrow (if my fake girlfirend doesn't message me)
I feel like I've got a few different ideas in this that I'm trying to pull off at once, but I might need to sacrifice one in order for the others to work. I've heard it too many times and have lost perspective so I can't tell
Joshua Thomas
god this board is useless kill yourself faggot then can you help me?
Kevin Davis
if you have to ask then yes. Keep practicing.
Julian Carter
yeah definitely.
Jayden Jones
do you have discord or email ?
Brayden Rivera
Pandy Pop Off#5920
I can give you some tips
Jayden Reyes
tip of dis dick! lol.
Eli Lopez
Some nice sounds there. I've been lusting after one for awhile but it's hard to justify hardware purchases other than interface and monitors.
Nathan Howard
added, gonna sleep now tho
David Nelson
thanks man, yeah I find the filter sounds really really nice (definitely sounds like a moog) Not a huge fan with the filter off tho, will probably be sticking to FM for that kinda stuff
>The lungaposting trend I started still going Thanks lads, you made me smile.
Brayden Barnes
Wasn't there an user here who couldn't use a DAW at work so he was trying to make music using Excel? Did he stop posting about it?
Maybe I'm mixing things up, but wasn't he the "FL Studio Fag" guy?
Tyler Kelly
That guy was ironically retarded. He could have just downloaded an app for his phone.
Blake Morgan
Maybe they didn't allow spending the day at the phone. In that case he would've just looked like he was working to anyone not directly looking at his screen.
Evan Taylor
Discipline, riffs and progressions come quick to those artistically inclined. Just treat it more like work and less like play
Adam Moore
>using old instruments Lol may as well use a harpsichord grandpa.
