My main problem is that it sounds like it has three to five different producers on it.

Yeah I agree with that. It just doesn't have very defined transitions to suit the song structures and that's fine but that's not what I want in my alternative butt-metal. Couldn't point out any specifics since I only listened to it on release. It's just forgettable and kinda bad IMO.

I'm a major fag about these dudes so I've listened to it non-stop, and it's an easy 8/10 for me. Not nearly as good as their last three but it does have good things about it.
But dear god, if you pay attention to it (including the remade bonus tracks) and you can tell the production was fucked. Especially Utafumi, which sounds like they put wet paper bags on all the microphones before they recorded it.
I still don't understand how the remade classic tracks have the best sound and mixing than the actual album itself. Thank god Aka won the production lottery at least.

What are the bonus tracks? I only remember the one from the second (?) single.

The deluxe edition, which is the one I bought, has Kigan, The Deeper Vileness, and Riyuu as remade tracks. Kigan, for example, has much clearer guitar work and the lows don't seem to get all buzzy like they do on songs like Rubbish Heap and Devote My Life (on the album itself). The Deeper Vileness has very clear and audible bass that doesn't sink into the rest of the mix (like on Ningen wo Kaburu, Zetsuentai or Followers), and Riyuu just makes everything sound great within their own boundaries. Nothing bleeds over, everything is audible, everything sounds good.
I don't get why they didn't work with Tue Madsen again. Maybe it'd feel like repetition, but the end result could have been a lot better.

No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith is probably the best live album of all time and it has the highest energy of any of their recordings which is what the band is about so I would start with that. The studio album that best captures their energy with good production in my opinion is Overkill so I would recommend that after.

"First wave" should really be called proto-black because it influence the genre but really wasn't. Anyways it's partly because according to some of the Norwegian guys, black metal was just supposed to be satanic metal without a particular sound but then everybody started cloning the same handful of Norwegian bands and now the genre is shit.

I don't think it was that bad, at least not for a comeback. The vocals felt out of place and shit leads but it had decent riffs, decent enough for me at least.

God I love the guitar work on their albums. Nothing super innovative or anything but always fun and suits the track well. Especially like the acoustic solos they sometimes do, like in Entwined by Vengeance or I Am God.

Lemmy basically did to early R&B/Soul music (ala Little Richard) what Black Sabbath did for English blues rock - turned the distortion and volume way up and then did a line of cocaine.
Like most bands that promulgate for 50 years, Motorhead has had eras (usually marked by lineup changes) that differ in quality but overall the entire discography is pretty solid and there's something for any listener.
Iron Fist, Another Perfect Day, Inferno, Overkill, and Motorizer are all very accessible places to start
