You should honestly look into outsider art and art brut. I enjoy it on that level - by showing an intensely personal and effortful creation that completely defines convention and taste, it reveals something deeper about humanity. Also, songs like My Pal Foot Foot are genuinely endearing.

That said, I admit that I rarely listen to it. And while I like it a lot now, at first I was honestly so creeped out by it that I couldn't stand it.

I really don't think so. There is something very genuine and interesting about what the Shaggs were doing, despite it obviously being so bad. I do think Zappa was trolling when he said they were better than the Beatles, but I suspect what he was really getting at was that the Shaggs were more genuine and less processed than the Beatles (I say this as a much bigger fan of the Beatles than Zappa or the Shaggs). I think Cobain and Zappa are exactly the kinds of people who would've appreciated the Shaggs.

No it isn't. It's a generic and inoffensive position to fall back on if you don't want to offend anyone and are too afraid to just admit that something is bad. I get that every piece of art has innate beauty and there's something to be learned from all art and all that hokey shit, but at a certain point, you need to be able to admit that some things are just shit. Some albums just suck, and no amount of post-ironic hype can change that.
