>Someone said synthesizer ?
what’s your favorite tape delay?
The fuck is that?
This is so fucking warm.
Eurorack is over, that’s the next trendy way to make bleeps. Better buy up the equipment now because by next year it’ll be overpriced.
I asked this in one of the recent threads already but the thread died shortly after. I was having a listen to newer virtual analogs such as the access virus, studiologic sledge and most recently the waldorf kyra and they all seem to have a very distinctive superclean rave or trance sound. I hardly found any videos in which they sounded even remotely analog. Is this simply a characteristic sound of these synths in the same way that we'd classify digital synths like the dx7 or real analogs like moog or does it come down to bad programming?
Would love to own a Synth, no idea what to buy at all.
All I know is I want one or two or three.
holding the tape with my thumb
nothing beats it
Good, i hope eurocrack has price drops because that shit is expensive.
great, a new wave of dipshits that won't know how to use the equipment they have. Just like tape machine users.
Don't start buying two volcas and a minilogue like a stupid redditor
Should i buy an andromeda a6? It's expensive as shit but ppl say it's the best analog synth ever made and i always wanted an analog synth.
best synth waifu claimed
>dipshits that won't know how to use the equipment they have
80% of PC users don't know how to use the PC
they are awesome. If you have the money, go for it. I would prefer a Dave Smith Prophet 6 or one of the new Moogs, but at that level they are all really good, just a matter of preference.
id suggest sth with a lot of knobs for live sound modulation. these synths are the most fun of all.
the best analog synth ever made
Sounds like an early 2000s virtual analog. Every vst can do it better. Access virus is cheaper as the other user said and sounds excactly the same.
It's a VA
Agreed. Incredible bit of kit.
Why is the TB303 so based?
I'd get tired of that sound if I listened to acid
bump
*bows the god of analog synthesizers*
any diy modular kiddos here?
I have a pretty nice collection, but favorite is my Echoplex EP-1 tubed tape delay. especially nice being fed a Metasonix D-1000 tube drum machine
SYNTHCHADS ONLY
yeah, built over 12u so far
total cost? whats the cheapest I can build a 12u for?
Thats alot of keys
Not sure how much I’ve invested. Research and diy your power supply and case too
i was told i can do a 6u for like $250, does that sound reasonable enough?
no
Probably not depending on what tools you already own etc.
There's a reason this synth was a flop. Beware.
>3k for this
What bullshit is gearslutz spouting this time?
what would you rec then instead?
Nobody really knows it fully.
It sounds really boring dry.
How's the deepmind 12 without effects by the way?
Soundwise this is very close to VSTs and higher end virtual analogs like the access virus and studiologic sledge. I don't hear anything analog or outstanding about it at all. Looks painful to program too.
so should i get an access virus then? or get no hardware at all and just download some more vsts?
By the time you put a good vst in the mix 100% of listeners can't tell the difference.
Well that clean VA sound is not something I'd ever buy hardware for to be honest.
there's a youtube channel where some guy does this, this is where I'm getting my info from:
>youtube.com
He keeps a spreadsheet of upward price estimates, and I already own basic carpentry power tools and a soldering iron, so I'm not factoring that in. But $250 for a 6u seems to good to be true, so I was just curious.
Anybody here have any experience with Reaktor? Can you recommend it? What did you find it most useful for?
anyone know any good synthesizers under $100? New or used. Doesnt matter.
Not new. You might still be able to get a Casio CZ for that. They're about the last of the old synths to skyrocket to ridiculous levels, they're just starting.
Otherwise just keep checking your local classifieds, there's a chance someone won't know what they have or don't want the hassle of online selling but just about anything on reverb or ebay is too expensive.
Probably some volca models, casio synths, yamaha pss synths, kawai k1 and older roland rompler racks from the jv series
Is there a point to a hardware rompler anymore?
It made sense in the 90s.
what is the benefit to hardware over vsts?
None if it's digital. Some people prefer the sound of true analog synths because they tend to be dirtier and less accurate.
What exactly are you wanting from your modular? Just a simple voice or...
>yamaha pss synths
this. bought a pss 460 for 30£ and i love it. it has the same chip that old soundblaster soundcards from the dos-midi area had. the pss 460 and 470 are the best because they not only have preset sounds but also a synth section.
i bought it because of this video:
youtu.be
Workflow (direct controls) first and foremost and being able to compose away from the computer for me personally. I only use the computer to do the direct recording at the end and for nothing else. I also value hardware more than something digital and free I'm not invested in. It doesn't feel tangible to me. Analog vs digital sound debate doesn't matter to me.
Is there a point to most hardware these days except for hands on controls or special synths that don't translate well/don't have a good digital counterpart? There really isn't a lot of cool contemporary stuff in the 100 dollar range unless you get lucky. I love these romplers for new age, vaporwave and dungeon synth aswell as having some acoustic instruments for sketching ideas. This user would be better served buying a midi controller and trying out different free plugins instead of buying hardware at that price if he is okay with being bound to a computer or iPad to make music.
i don't know, i don't know anything about synths but making noises from voltages on homemade hardware sounds like a very cool project so I'm gonna do it. I know i like a lot of music that uses synths.
i guess it'd be nice to have something that allows me to jam with myself, like a backdrop for piano, guitar, bass and/or drums. and something that I can multitrack (by recording and layering on the computer, or whatever) with to get nice full sounds and interesting textures
Cool, be sure to look into Lunetta cmos circuits too, lots you do for little money
I guess it's nice to have dedicated controls but I've got dozens of knobs and sliders I can assign with my midi keyboards too.
Yes those old romplers are great for new age and related genres. The Korg M1 and Emu sampler VSTs cover that really well too though.
I got a portable 3U case with power for $250 by being thrifty, if you DIY'd I bet you could make your own 6U for the same or cheaper
this is me at first I thought you meant only the case, but if you mean a whole system ... wew I doubt even with extensive DIY skills you could get under $500
a requirement of being the "best" synth ever is the ability to read and upload sysex files.
debate me on this
So, I am pretty ignorant bout this but very curious. Can anyone explain to me what's the point of pure synths that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars? Like, what's the point of hardware that does this stuff when there's software for PCs? As someone that doesn't know anything, I would think that a PC could be able to create any possible sound with the right software and settings. I don't see how a dedicated hardware would be able to do anything different. Care to educate me on the benefits of a high end synth over just a midi controller and a pc with good software (which is bound to be still cheaper than a very high end synth)?
Ok nevermind, this got answered above, sorry for asking without checking
When you're talking about anything over 10k it's just a collectible for bragging rights.
What’s the point of software for PCs when there’s hardware?
some high end synths have the "magic" or "secret sauce"
but for the most part software synths have gotten so good most people can't tell the difference
see pic related to how people TRULY feel about analog gear
don't even try to debate this
>Lunetta cmos
thanks for the tip! I was just reading up on wtf cmos chips are the other day. I started some breadboard project that resembles cmos i think.
why do you doubt it? the video i linked literally details and guides you on doing exactly that.. just curious, not trying to flame
>boomers desperately clinging to what little remains of their youth
Sounds about right.
Some high end stuff is simply like buying a guitar for thousands of dollars. Actual hardware also takes strain out of your CPU and it's portable for gigs with all parameters being available to you on the front for tweaking on the fly. There can also be differences in sound between hardware and software and some instruments aren't available digitally. I don't think I've ever heard a decent MS20 emulation for example. Just like with guitar there are a lot of myths and snake oil sellers out there aswell as corksniffers on forums. Unlike guitars though, actual analog synths do become more expensive to design and manufacture the higher you go in price.
folktek gear is great, love my garden
So that's what a polyphonic theremin looks like.
actually these are what polyphonic theremin look like ;)
Woops
Oh, another strymon bigsky synth video
what’s wrong with Bigsky?
Solid setup there man. Would just love to hear all the equipment put together.
Yes please. I really wish you guys would give us an audio sample of the gear you keep showing us pictures of.
Back off, sissy.
t. minibrute owner
The Arturia Microfreak is a good budget option if you don't mind digital synthesis. Another option is the Korg Monologue which is all analogue. Both are around $300-350
I picked up a Six-Trak about a couple weeks ago, got it for $270. Should I resell it or keep?
You picked up a meme track at the height of eceleb inflation. Sell it immediately.
ok thanks
Sorry, I read that as six track tape recorder. No idea about that synth.
My favorite and first synth
post some of the music you made with it
Fun fact, a lot of the Bleach anime OST was made with patches from this synth
My first and only synth.
As a bonus it's great for controlling my V-Station vst.
>Actual hardware also takes strain out of your CPU and it's portable for gigs with all parameters being available to you on the front for tweaking on the fly.
Kek, there is literally not a single application for software synths that is complicated enough for it to overwhelm even a cheap CPU in 2019.
Who the fuck are you, you're not me
wait a minute are you sure
the one i made with my marantz
Anyone else into creating beats on ROMplers? Also my first synth.
>already
wtf whos the qt
If you dont crossdress to play your synths youre simply doing it wrong and are just a lame poseur.
No but I do use my Yamaha XG keyboard to pay midi files sometimes.
I just recently found out how to use the k2000's built in sequencer/arranger which has loop and quantize capabilities. It's basically being used a drum machine atm.
The old Kurzweils have some great sounds. I wouldn't mind finding a sample library to play with.
I'm already kind of a tomboy tho
I'd definitely recommend it. I just ordered some AKAI floppys that have the tr-808/909 samples and the kurz should be able to read them no problem.
>Studiologic-Sledge-01.jpg
If you can decipher what he's talking about this should be helpful to decide about getting this.

hot
Are Yamaha Refaces just VSTs wrapped in a toy keyboard?
Aince when is vst synonymous with software
This is a synthesizer thread, there's no need to be autistic.
do they utilize analog circuits? they just use a digital chip and firmware, so basically they're similar to software synths
I guess I'll just have to save up for a real DX7 then.
lol what's with everyone wanting this meme synth lately? the presets are the literal worst and you're not going to be a jexus with the thing. It's a pain to program. If you want FM, get something newer and better
The thing is digital anyway. Makes much more sense to program them on the computer screen aswell as is the case with a lot of synths from that time.
The refaces are memes anyway. The DX is castrated and still only has 32 patch slots while the CS can't save a single preset without their stupid iphone app shit
new fm sounds gay, also you havent even tried the machine, fucking larper.
doesnt matter that its digital. its old school digital, crummy and nasty, way different than current methods.
>CS can't save a single preset without their stupid iphone app shit
why are the gooks like this?
ever tried the volca sample? it cant even sample, and when you want to load a new sound you need to use your phone trolololol and it takes ages
"classic" fm sounded gay too and who cares if I havent used it lmao its digital, use a computer, same thing.
>"classic" fm sounded gay
eh no
>too and who cares if I havent used it lmao its digital
called it, vst poorfag talking shit outta its ass.
pls give me one example of a DX7 patch that doesn't sound like corny dogshit
>le post X i know nothing about but i will act as a judge of it XD
eww go away poorfag, you dont own hardware, you dont get to talk, its super simple.
lol I own a lot of hardware synths, I just prefer to buy ones that don't suck complete ass. Enjoy wasting your money on a cheap sounding preset machine to make your vaporwave or chillstep or whatever on tho you dumbass zoomer
>jexus
you're the faggot I told "you're no jexus" when you posted your youtube channel, arent you? The DX7's presets are half the reason people buy it, genius.
I'm sorry you're a faggot user. The EP alone is delicious, and solid bass is the shit.
youtube.com
>arent you?
don't have a youtube channel
>The DX7's presets are half the reason people buy it, genius.
yeah and I'm saying they're horrible and dated and only zoomers who fetishize the absolute gayest of the music from the 80s and 90s would seek them out in 2019.
fucking hate you kids unironically trying to bring back the sounds of celine dion
>celine dion is the only artist to utilize a fat electric piano
daww, it's retarded
Ah, so you admit there's an appeal, then? This honestly sounds like sour grapes to me.
>"stop buying all of this shitty hardware no one needs, you're making it unaffordable!"
celine dion, michael bolton, the list of amazing artists goes on... it's not a good sound but it's kitsch and sure, I guess you could say that's the appeal, but no music that's worth a shit has been or will be produced with it
I really like the keyboard in this song. Anyone know what the preset is called, or how to get a similar sound? It’s been bugging me for a week
also lol did you just get your first job or something? Literally who is a DX7 unaffordable for
>he doesnt like dulcet electric piano
again, you gay
youtube.com
>Literally who is a DX7 unaffordable for
for the kind of people who whine about them on Yea Forums
>4chen retards shitting on FM
holy pleb board.
dude that shits gay as hell, get real rhodes you actual poorfag
>rhodes
staying with the theme of crap people buy for a particular sound, are we?
>implying a rhodes can do any of this
youtube.com
>implying a rhodes can do any of this
no but my phone can
Your phone has 8 multitimbral 6 operator FM synths? I'm sure it's real fun to play, too
It doesn't look like any of these racks are played on the device itself. They're either sequenced or an external keyboard is used which makes the phone playability argument irrelevant
it can make the same sounds and I can use a midi keyboard or sequencer with it. There are cool digital hardware synths out there worth investing in but DX7 isn't one unless you're just looking to buy into the vintage synth aesthetic meme.
>They're either sequenced or an external keyboard is used which makes the phone playability argument irrelevant
and yet you havent verified whether you have the ability to play 8 multitimbral fm synths with 48 operators between them.
>it can make the same sounds
lol, no, you mean it can sample the sounds and play samples.
>There are cool digital hardware synths out there worth investing in but DX7 isn't one
the dx7 absolutely qualifies as a cool digital hardware synth. Why wouldnt it? You personally dislike the presets?
A challenger appears!
who
imo it's because of the path of least resistance, you get virtual analogs filled to the brim with corny supersaw happy hardcore presets and shit like that and 9/10 times that shit ends up getting used on recordings or live. you can usually get great lush sounds out of them depending on the architecture
>lol, no, you mean it can sample the sounds and play samples.
digital sample of a digital sound, it sounds exactly the same
at least you've stopped pretending that your phone can do what it cant.
lol ok kid keep deluding urself into thinking your a e s t h e t i c memesynth is better than a volca or vst
>deflecting again
just own up to the stupid shit you say, faggot.
>a volca FM is better than a dx7
hahaha, like that. that's some stupid shit.
>aesthetic
yes, because we're all the same guy you're thinking of. Are you the same moron who thinks EP only belongs in 80s pop ballads?
Anyone?
sounds like a couple sine waves, slightly detuned from each other, with a bit of modulation and reverb.
>you're the faggot I told "you're no jexus" when you posted your youtube channel, arent you? The DX7's presets are half the reason people buy it, genius.
no that was me lol. but what does me getting an op-1 has to do with the DX7 retard? lmao
also btw, at least i make actual songs with my synths and not just show them off in badly edited youtube videos like jexus lmao.
>badly edited youtube videos like jexus
lol I have never witnessed a bigger case of butthurt in my life. You're a mite on a flea's ass compared to that guy
im not comparable to that guy. he makes synth patches and shitty youtube videos. i make music. youre the one whos being butthurt btw. zero self-awareness lol.
He's good at making patches but his output sucks
>he makes synth patches and shitty youtube videos.
He has full songs that blow your shit out of the water, bro. Are you always being this ignorant when you say other lack awareness? His demonstration of patches blow your shit out of the water, too, and that's just a string of unrelated ideas meant to show off sounds.
sounds just like all the random synthwave stuff thats being dumped by the hundreds every day to youtube. if it didnt have his name tagged onto it and you saw it on one of these EPIC 80s SYNTHWAVE BROOO! channels you wouldnt give a shit about it.
Not synthwave but that boring 2000s IDM inspired stuff to my ears
>if it didnt have his name tagged onto it and you saw it on one of these EPIC 80s SYNTHWAVE BROOO! channels you wouldnt give a shit about it
talk about projection. jexus isnt even synthwave, jackass.
What he is, is objectively better than you, despite being polish
How did you folks get better at getting specific sounds out of your synths? I recently picked up a Deepmind 6 as my first synth and while I understand a lot of the basics - I know ADSR, LFOs, square vs saw - I'm having trouble getting to the point where I know how to make the kind of sounds I want to make.
>oneohtrix_point_never.jpg
this song i made youtube.com
might as well have been made by him. in fact if it said "WC (
what sounds are you looking for? usually it's about the combination of filters+envelopes and maybe effects
>this song i made youtube.com
>might as well have been made by him.
I've already heard your boring, static, non-dynamic and unimpressive music. If you think that has the same character, you're delusional.
>yeah that doesnt really exist m8
keep telling yourself that
>jexus is a youtube personality!
he never even speaks, and hasnt uploaded for a decade, bro.
Yes, Jexus was doing what you're trying to do now, but better, over a decade ago. Maybe that's why you're butthurt?
The deepmind presets are heavily drowned in effects so start with the absolute basics. Just one oscilator. Also look up subtractive synthesis online. The basics are all the same for brass, strings, percussion etc. across all synths.
I'm pretty inspired by OPN's earlier stuff. Dreamy, alien sounding ambient music that wouldn't be out of place in a documentary about space or something. I know he loves to use multiple arps at different speeds, stuff like that.
On the cleaner end of the spectrum, I like Hiroshi Yoshimura's new-wave ambient work.
>The deepmind presets are heavily drowned in effects
I've noticed, lol. Been trying to make my own, and I've come up with a few neat sounds.
post your setup, user
>I've already heard your boring, static, non-dynamic and unimpressive music. If you think that has the same character, you're delusional.
oh no! you dont like my music!?? i must kms right now. whats the purpose for me anymore?
his music is just some edgy bass arps transposed on the keyboard plus some lead lines repeated over and over. throw in some bubbly random bleeps and bloops and you have your original wc olo garb™ song.
>keep telling yourself that
i already said that difference in complexity levels exist, but that doesnt make a song objectively better, as such a thing doesnt really exist in arts, especially in music where everyones taste is just very diverse.
rhubarb by aphex twin is a good song just is vordhosbn. theyre not in the slightest comparable complexity wise.
>he never even speaks, and hasnt uploaded for a decade, bro.
no he doesnt speak but he writes:
syntezatory.net.pl
ok so that means now he lost the status of being a youtube personality all of a sudden? is that why all people in the synth threads appearently know him or on other synth forums?
oh no somebody did something before i did it! i must stop pursuing everything i do because somebody did something similar before me!!11
michael jackson already did pop music in the 80s! and he did it "better" than many pop stars today! how dare they also do it.
>i already said that difference in complexity levels exist, but that doesnt make a song objectively better,
no, it's every other discernible quality of music that does that, tryhard faggot. Go make another amateurish song and upload it to some 80s movie to give it an air of credibility or something- oh wait
>oh no somebody did something before i did it! i must stop pursuing everything i do because somebody did something similar before me!!11
>michael jackson already did pop music in the 80s! and he did it "better" than many pop stars today! how dare they also do it.
lol you are so unbelievably assmad right now, it's great
>lol you are so unbelievably assmad right now, it's great
all arguments you have: lol u mad bro xDD!
ahahahaha look at him go. what's next for you now, subpar Jexus? The fans want to know
whats next? uhm more music ;) do you also make music? or do you just shitpost on Yea Forums all day?
Tempted to buy the volca drum just to have a cheap drum machine. Been eyeing the behringer 808 clone too but who knows when the fuck that's coming out. Anyone have any experience with the volca?
to the top
no answer...who would have thought
does baby want fed again already?
stop making these threads
youre really talented at dodging questions my friend!
uh oh, someone's upset. Get outbid on a sweet DX7 or something?
Of course I make music, doofus. Who doesnt? No, I'm not a youtuber. Yes, I shitpost as a hobby, and I have a lot of downtime
lol bringing the DX7 into this thread was easy yet effective b8
so post it then
>inb4 "i don't upload it to the internet, i don't need the admiration by strangers"

Electronic artists knew sheet notation back then? Nowadays you can play chords by playing a button or have the music be autogenerated for you.
Bloody useless. More trouble than it's worth to get a sound somewhere between a 303 and a 101. I've owned all 3 and couldn't sell the 202 fast enough. Over-rated.
what a shitty thread
Good thing you've finally arrived to improve it
>not a single
Ever tried, I don't know, having multiple vsts at once without bouncing shit?
I would actually donate my left testicle in order to possess a mint Jupiter 8.
I don't think human testicles are worth as much as pinnacle Roland engineering though.
idk what to tell you
>Jupiter 8
Bought a JP-8000 a while back to fill the void, but it's not the same
how did i know you posted Hainbach.
It's great for trance though
Do you play that garden with a bow?
I use an ebow sometimes
so much great gear in one pic
What even is a synthesizer?
ok
nice, how is that erebus?
Is there anything more lame than modular synths? Semi-modulars are alright.
The ultimate challenge: post a video of something good made by modular synths.
cool behringer poster
also, what OS is that?

go suck a mean dick
good lord electronic music is so redundant
We have a winrar... good ol Walter Carlos
I can't think of a better use for a six-figure synth setup than to make patches for a eurodance track.

Thoughts? brap.bandcamp.com
Sounds pretty good. Probably worth a closer listen.
i literally just did a line and farted this out on my modular for you
instaud.io
i dig it
Kudos for actually uploading sound and not just pictures.
Not bad. 7/10 considering it's a fart
that was also my first synth, great synth
and if you haven't seen the easter egg yet:
Press the MASTER button, then the UTIL soft button, then the ( ) empty space soft button and finally, the SETUP button.
Bump
the best ROMpler is a PC.
Maybe if it’s a dedicated computer that also isn’t running a daw. Otherwise they are just taking each other’s ram and read/write
>instaud.io
pretty good. mix it better and you have a decent techno song.
the best ROMpler is a DAW.
>so much great gear in one pic
*that you don't need because you can do everything they do on vsts ;)
I'm not even a keyboardist and I've wanted one of these for over 10 years
twiddling knobs is fun, user
jeez is there any vst that emulates Virus?
Badass little synth and one of my favorite monos ever. Could not recommend highly enough
Win7 lol
>Win7 lol
truly enlightened individual
have you tried win 10? with recent updates it's much better now
>Is there anything more lame than modular synths?
talking about how modular synths are lame
no but I'm gonna have to upgrade soon because this thing is shitting out on me hard. Can't even use reaper without it freezing every time mid-record. Pain in the ass.
Kali Malone
The virus itself. On the other hand you can just use any modern VA vst to achieve the same clean and sterile trance sound of the 2000s
yup I switched to win 10 finally, it's good as long as microsoft keeps releasing new updates and features
>The virus itself.
really? there's a Virus VSTi somewhere? where did you find it?
There's an integration plugin available but what I meant is that the whole thing is completely digital and massively outdated. Get sylenth1 or uhe hive instead.
I know only Virus Indigo and Virus TDM vstis which all were pro tools-only
I wanna get into analog synths been fucking with digital ones forever, Yamaha dx7(original or reface) or buy a bunch of volcas to run together.
The dx7 is digital
it still sucks though, I've contemplated moving to a non-win/mac OS anyway
I've done it before. Don't bother unless you just need a basic office and internet machine or you're a hobbyist tinker who thinks solving problems with his computer is time better spent than making music. It's not worth the hassle.
I shouldve said vsts
