It's got the best riffs of anything else he mentions even if it's not as aggressive or as technical as some of that stuff. Not to mention it's the most rewarding as an album experience because every song doesn't do the same fucking thing.

In fact I think those other thrash albums were far more damaging to metal because they created a standard of all future metal albums to need to be more one dimensional on a song by song, and to automatically cause backlash by autists otherwise. Before a lot of shitty 80s thrash we had guys like Metallica, Megadeth (on Peace Sells), even before we had earlier Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. who all made songs that didn't do the same shit there would be like a ballad or a slower doomier track along with the usual fast attack. Comparatively every song on Darkness Descends is fast fast fast with one slower part in the middle then fast fast fast. There's no incentive to listen to the lesser songs on that album because they are inferior versions of the couple best songs on the album.

I always used to shit on this kinda metal. But although it doesn't have the fanciest "riffs", the vocal melodies and the fills/solos from the guitars/keys are amazing to the extent where they make up for lack of conventional riffing.

Nah, it's more like I kinda gained appreciation for Power Metal that isn't USPM. It's like a continuation of the Deep Purple/Rainbow school of metal which is on simpler riffs as foundation for super talented vocal and guitar/keyboard leads. It's a bit different from the more conventional approach where everything else is backseat or supplement to the focus of the main guitar riffs which is more the early Sabbath approach or the approach tied to most thrash/death metal. Metal as an overall genre has a lot to offer which requires different approaches of appreciation for each different approach towards songwriting/style.

If you read the full review, his issue is that Metallica takes influence from Priest and Sabbath when they would venture a little too far into 70s excess (think Epitaph or Fluff), manifesting in the indulgent midsection of the title track and the entirety of Orion. He blames this sense of dynamism for shit like Opeth, and I can't say he's wrong about that.

Comparing bands like Sabbath, Priest and Metallica having a variety in songs to Opeth is dumb as shit, too. Opeth’s heavy soft heavy is in almost all their songs and is like a signature aspect of their overall sound meanwhile those other bands have individual songs like Dreamer Deciever or One that dedicate themselves to a different approach in music. Opeth’s obvious influence in “dynamics” (it’s not really dynamics but textural change as well so to just call it dynamics is disingenuous) comes from progressive rock bands that did the same exact thing.

Orion’s middle section is its best part, and well thought out. If you aren’t fucking deaf, you can hear the difference between the lead parts in that song vs the more generic Kirk solos in the rest of the album full of more cliche pentatonic phrases. Lead melody based sections doesn’t automatically equate to self indulgence, and to think so just shows one’s narrow minded in music rather than any inherent knowledge/experience.

It's just boring simple scale noodling, doesn't matter that it isn't pentatonic like Kirk's.

Not really considering before that part, the song was already doing riffs consisting of thirds and inverted chords alongside the usual power chords also with small fills from the guitar that imply that “classical” feel you’re talking about. The songs building up to it since the start. It isn’t typical of metal it’s part of why it remains this classic fans look back to with love (although I would argue is quite reminiscent of stuff from NWOBHM bands and Mercyful Fate although the deliberate slow feeing gives it more emotion imo especially on the bend.) Being formulaic is how you get stale in a genre.

Why not just listen to hardcore punk and it’s subgenres if primitive raw aggressive as fuck blunt riffs is what you want? Metal’s too theatrical for that kind of more mundane sound.

Not my chart, but Death SS really is a meme band that didn't ifluence anything. I guess they might grow on me, but most of the stuff I've heard from them is just boring and/or funny.

But did anyone actually take influence from them? I'm aware that a band like Mercyful Fate usually aren't black metal musically (although there are exceptions to that rule), but atleast they were highly influential to both the first and second wave and co-invented the black metal image with Venom.
Granted, I wasn't there in the 80's, but Death SS seems like a band that no-one listened to until quite recently.
