Playboi Carti - Die Lit

Can someone please explain what they like about this album? I really don't get it.
I've tried listening to it 6 or 7 times and I always get bored and turn it off.
I see tons of praise for it here but it just seems so generic and uninspired.
I'm genuinely interested in hearing why people seem to like it so much.

I already deleted it from my phone, but maybe if I gain a new perspective on it, I'll be able to give it another try, which I am willing to do.

self titled is better, miles better

locations intro is mind blogging to this day

it's shit, don't bother. this album is pantera of hip hop and carti is dead

I get that you like it, but what do you like about it?
can you be a little bit more descriptive?
I don't need a five paragraph essay, just a little bit of expanding on why you think it could be AOTY.

okay, I'll give this a listen.

nope. I don't get it.
generic, repetitive and uninspired.
that little guitar solo sample is pretty tight though.

am I just too much of a boomer to "get" it?
it just seems like more of the same. like I've heard these songs a million times before even though it's my first time listening.

Go listen to his self titled mixtape that came out in 2017. Die Lit is good but I can see why some might not like it

Playboi Carti is committed to something greater than music. His art goes beyond pure emotional expression into analytical territory concerning the existential nature of life. Much like with what we are seeing in the 21st century explosion of scientific inquiry and development, Playboi Carti is committed to pushing music into new territory with every new album. Music as philosophy, music as science and art combined into one being, music as the meaning of life expressed metaphysically onto itself.

Babbling like an infant is the logical conclusion of a generation of uninhibited excess and hedonism - Playboi Carti is making the most important political statement of the century. One that is the most deleuzian, freudian, and hegelian work ever executed in musical history. One that will build on the works of the greatest philosophers in history and will finally put an end to all intellectual inquiry and thought, as everything that could be said will already be discovered through Playboi Carti.

French Psychoanalysts will be studying and writing about Playboi Carti for centuries to come.

>sage
kill yourself my nigga, it's a legitimate question.
and how dare you!! Panera is delicious!!

I'm listening to it right now.
bumping it on my speakers so I get the true feel of it...

sure, it might sound hot playing in a club, but it sounds like every other rap album released in the past decade, which is to say generic, stale and uninspired.
the lyrics are terrible, he just repeats the same thing over and over with a slightly different inflection in his voice or changing one word.
the beats sound like they were made by non-musicians playing around with a DAW they don't understand like "boom clap boom boom clap, AYO that sound like fire!!"

is it just that the standards have been lowered so much that anything .01 over average is considered good now?
I think I might just be over hip hop. it wasn't made for my white ass anyway.

I'm not hating on anyone for liking it, you can like whatever you want and I won't hate you for doing so. but I think modern rap has just passed me by on its long downward spiral.

>to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Die Lit.
thank you for your contribution.
I wasnt really expecting any real answers anyway.
even though I genuinely do want to know.
I'm starting to think it's just a meme that I'm not in on.

it's hypnotic, euphoric, pure pleasure. carti is charismatic, so much of it non-verbal, it's like nodding on MDMA. to think about the lyrics is a mistake.

Give it a couple of years, mature a little. Get some more real world experience. It'll click only then. In the meantime, I'm sure you have plenty of Radiohead records waiting for you to listen to (or re-listen to, considering your previous posts).

i personally think die lit is better than self titled unlike most of the people itt. For me, carti's music feels like a hallucination, or a psychedelic experience, the appeal coming from the infectious "vibe" of the whole thing. My love for die lit is rooted in the way it feels more than anything, its almost like taking ecstasy and drifting away into pure bliss. It's almost mindless and he just barrels through the album throwing out ear worm after ear worm, a lot of the time over these synths that sound like nothing ive ever heard in any hip hop record. Flatbed freestyle is my favourite track, although I'd also recommend long time (intro).

hope that helps in some way just wrote exactyl what i thought, im sure someone else could put it better

To give a real answer, I feel like he takes a lot of what makes trap good and focuses on that. His music is rly catchy, sometimes it takes a few listens for it to catch on but songs like lookin, top, and had 2 are super catchy. It also gives off a super carefree vibe that u have to embrace when listening, I think ur thinking too much about why u should like it which is the opposite of the vibe he gives off

Lastly, the thing I like the most is the bouncy feeling his songs give off which I feel like sets him apart, the only other song I’ve heard with that kinda sound is Houdini by Travis, and even that is featuring carti. I especially get it on some of the new leaks like no lie, Cancun, and classroom. The bass lines Pierre has are super bouncy and have a different sound than a lot of other beats, and carti matches it perfect.

I think his self titled is a better starting point tho, even though I like die lit more, it catches on a bit faster so I might start with that

I've never really been into lyrics anyway, I've always valued production and beats more. but the beats on Die Lit and Self-titled (which I'm listening to right now) just seem lazy and uninspired.
like they are nothing special, they've been done before, ten thousand times.

no need for all that projection. I'm in my 30s and I have more life experience than I know what to do with.
besides National Anthem and Everything in its Right Place, idgaf about Radiohead. massively overrated.
I'm sorry for shitting on your favorite rapper, but he's not very good.
and I keep re-watching the same words go through my mind; boring, generic, uninspired, unoriginal, lazy, amateurish, repetitive.

I kinda like the beat on Lame Niggaz but then he comes in and starts saying the same line over and over again and it doesn't even mean anything or have any emotional depth. he could be saying literally anything that is the same number of syllables and it would have the exact same effect.

You’re looking at it wrong

Go into the mind state of not thinking his music as “rap” and just listen to it for what is.

THIS IS NOT POP THIS SOME ROCK

THIS IS NOT POP THIS SOME ROCK

THIS IS NOT POP THIS SOME ROCK

THIS IS NOT POP THIS SOME ROCK

huh, the compression, bombarding low end, grime tinged synth pings, and layered ad-libs on RIP sound particularly hallucinatory and inspired to me. to each their own though!

Doesn't change what I said buddy. Give it a couple years. You have a lot of life left to live.

You're in your 30s and wondering about die lit on Yea Forums? I don't think it appeals to old people that well.

r*ported

thank you for giving me a genuine answer.
I can respect anyone who will take the time to defend the things they enjoy from obnoxious assholes on the internet like me.
I don't fault people for liking the music they like (I like all sorts of shit people would probably laugh in my face for liking) and I get how it can feel different to different people based on their own unique life experiences or outlook.
it really may just go over my head because I've been out of the rap game for so long that I just don't get it any more.

another genuine opinion! this must be my lucky day!
I might be too hard on Carti, I think it's just a style that I don't get (and trust me I've done a lot of drugs in the past decade and a half so that's not the problem).
I can tell that he's talented and has a certain appeal to a younger generation. he does have a cool flow and the beats are hot, but I just saw so much hype for it on Yea Forums before I got a chance to listen to it.
so it may have fallen victim to never being able to live up to the hype that I created for it in my mind.

when I see things labeled as AOTY/AOTD the gears start turning in my head and I imagine that I'm in store for some work of art masterpiece.
then when it turns out to be adequate or even just good, it seems like it's awful because I expected so much from it.

it's a meme that you aren't in on.

Attached: Da1jQHTVwAE5b0i.jpg (960x960, 99K)

yeah it really is all just personal opinion.
unfortunately I don't get any of that out of it. the production doesn't do it for me, even on headphones. it just seems lackluster to me, but I'm just one guy whose opinion doesn't matter anyway.
I had just seen it included on so many charts and AOTD threads, that once I got around to listening to it, there was nothing that could've ever been good enough to live up to the image that I had already prejudged it by.
I wish it wasn't the case, but I'm sure I do it all the time.

well excuse the fuck out of me for being older than you and still being interested in understanding, discussing and enjoying music.
consider me eternally BTFOd.
I'll go kill myself now.

I didnt understand the appeal of rap either until I started listening to it like industrial and EBM

I think what you said about your expectations getting in the way of liking it is completely true, because going into it thinking it’s going to be a crazy moving experience is the complete opposite of what it is. Even though it is in my opinion one of the best albums this decade, it is not in any way moving or a crazy mind blowing piece of art. It is, however, possibly one of the most fun pieces of music to listen to I’ve ever experienced, and u have to go into it expecting it to just be fun and careless to enjoy it, and if u do it’s super rewarding because I honestly don’t even rly enjoy listening to much trap besides carti these days because I enjoy it so much more than the rest.

I know it's memed up, but I actually appreciated the more abrasive take on trap it had. I can't figure out why people say Travis Scott's Rodeo is a trap staple though. That shit sucks m8.

I fucking KNEW IT REEEEEEEEEE
THIS CANT BE HAPPENING TO ME!
NOT AGAIN!!!!

I've been into rap since the 90s but I think I unironically may be getting too old for it.
I'm really tired of listening to people bragging about and being proud of ruining people's lives or even "inadvertently" killing them just to make $20.
it's not a virtue and it doesn't make you cool.
it makes you a bad person who doesn't care about taking advantage of dumb vulnerable people.

It sounds like a bit of a stretch but Travis Scott's brand of heavy oppressive beats always reminds me of a walmart or costco parking lot after dark

playboi carti freaks me out because i swear he was a total joke who everyone thought sucked and i woke up one day and everyone loved him and it's like he's one of the best rappers of the decade
it's like i went into a parallel universe where everything's the same except the acclaim of playboi carti did a total 180

Kek I understand what you mean

The lyrics rub me wrong sometimes too if theyre really extreme (carti's r.i.p. took me a while to get over, not because it shocked me but because it just feels embarrassing to have it blaring on speakers) but they're obviously accessory to the music at this point. I'd say just try to tune them out. There's about as much depth to rap lyrics right now as there is to shit like rock and roll all nite

alright now we're cookin'. I can get behind it being fun. it did give off a fun carefree kind of vibe in a lot of places.
it seems like the type of album that would get people hyped up at a party.
I went into it expecting it to be a deep work of art, and it's really just a fun frat party banger album.

okay I think I get it now, you're right, I was looking at it the wrong way.
SEE! this is why I made this thread, I had thought about it for several days but I figured I'd just get memed into an early grave with no real answer from anyone.

God bless the anons ITT who actually want to discuss music and put a little effort into trying to explain their positions without the need to put me down in the process.
don't ever let anyone get you down for actually putting in effort instead of just shitposting.

>God bless the anons ITT who actually want to discuss music and put a little effort into trying to explain their positions
I used to hate it when I saw music nerds analyze modern rap in a more academic light but I guess i've been guilty of this on several occasions lately. Talking about it with actual trap fans is pointless because a lot of them only appreciate it on a surface level and couldn't tell you why they like it other than it just works for them. Trying to win someone over is a different story though since that's when going a little more in depth can come in handy

I'm just so tired of people glorifying drug dealers.
they are the literal scum of the earth and I have plenty of personal experience that confirms this, over and over again.
but no no no, they can't go out and try to find a real job cuz "that's some white man bullshit" or because it's not """cool""" to have a job.
makes me mad tbqhwy.

Die Lit is like Throbbing Gristle but the lyrics are about guap

I just like the image that he and Pierre portray. It’s like weird nerd art with heavy anime and Japan influences

Pierre is truly the mastermind to his success

A lot of rappers have actual criminal backgrounds but the lyrics are basically just power fantasy material to the average listener. It's meant to scratch the same itch as lyrics about war and murder in metal

dothatshit! Is a work of art

youtu.be/geqZRB2-XlI

perhaps, but metalheads usually don't go out and wage war. they might join the military or something, but it's not really the same thing.
a lot of young kids who grow up listening to rap and just being immersed in that culture decide that living that lifestyle might be a cool thing to do.
but it's a very sociopathic "career" to pursue, where you have to make sure in your head that you don't care what happens to the people you sell to. and that's just not a healthy way to live mentally. where you have to separate yourself from reality and the consequences of what you're putting out into the world.
not that drug addicts are innocent angels or anything. but it would be nice if you weren't able to buy heroin and cocaine on any given street corner in any US city.

plus for dealers, best case scenario your inevitable prison sentence isn't for life and worst case you get shot on that street corner and die
lit
before your 30th birthday.

I know basically nothing about either of them besides seeing Die Lit brought up all over Yea Forums AOTD threads. I don't even know where Carti is from or what label he's on or anything. I did no research into his background before listening, which may have been a mistake especially for a rapper I had never heard of.

redpill me on Pierre.

honestly i think it might just be that you dont listen to much modern rap leading to the mindset that it sounds like everything youd expect it to sound like and therefore think its generic or boring. if youre not familiar with the subgenre then its probably harder for you to parse what carti is doing specifically very well and why he is so good at it.

based post

yeah, this is pretty much it.
I stopped listening to rap for a number of years in the late 00s-mid 10s, so I was completely out of the game. it evolved past me and now I've been curious about what I've missed and consequently I've been very disappointed in what I've found.

I still love Kanye but I did even when I wasn't listening to rap much. I actually enjoyed a few albums like Taboo by Denzel Curry and Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown, they both feel new but with a touch of old.
and I liked Blank Banshee 0 a lot too, so I know that I can enjoy trap music when more of the focus is just on the beats. I think a lot of it is the lyrics that puts me off. it just seems so much less poetic and even just less creative.
and honestly the beats on Die Lit don't even do it for me, they just seemed bland and almost like they weren't even trying (I feel bad saying that because I'm sure it's not the case and I really do hate shitting on other people's art, but that's just the way it hit me).

Attached: tl;dr.gif (252x198, 976K)

this is a good explanation

is nodding on mdma just nodding from dope but that's what the pills were cut with?
cuz I'm familiar with catching a nod from d, but I've only done molly a handful of times and I definitely never nodded on it.
