Not good enough. I've heard it live and it just sounds horrible.
But a guitar tuned to somewhere between bass and normal guitar range is a lot better.
You gotta learn to play the chords right. You need the low end and the upper end played at the same time.
You can do amazing things with that.
That's why Kyuss's Guitar is a good example, the lead is nearly complimentary to the bass in parts, then goes up octaves to add little details.
