lol I remember Tarkus completely blew my mind when I heard it. When I was a teenager I was really into punk (still am tbqh), and all the punk docs talked about how awful prog was, how much punk needed to kill it, and they always pointed to ELP as the ultimate embodiment of everything wrong with prog. So I assumed it was shit. Then, years later, when I was probably 18 or so, I finally listened to it and my jaw dropped. It's so much better than anything by 99% of the punk bands out there.

When I was like 13 I had a fever dream about an animal fairly similar to Tarkus, but instead of a tank armadillo it was a rhino car. Its torso was in the approximate shape of a purse without strings, but it had two necks (no heads though), one at either end. Instead of legs they had wheels. They were some conquering race of aliens that were prevalent exactly 2.1 billion years ago, were about 20 feet tall, and moved in herds. They had destroyed the native race of little electric birds in the dream, and for some reason that made make wake up drenched in sweat.

prog doesn't suck, it's great music, great compositions and pretty much is better all around than 90% of rock music. That was not the problem critics had with it, it was just some discursive / political thing, as rock was mostly seen as a rebelious thing both musically and politicaly speaking, let's say it was considered like a big 'fuck you' to the establisment. Then prog came around and ruined that whole thing as the idea of prog (of trying to imitate classical complexity with difficult compositions, tendecy of looking for virtuosity and making music all around ""hard"" to listen at) is elitist, snobby, and pretty much a return to the establisment society values, thus precisely the contrary of what rock music what supposed to mean or express in the first place. Needless to say that critics are retarded.
