the cure > joy division >>>>> the smiths

Doesn't matter. The first 3 albums by PiL and the two LPs by This Heat are the only post punk alums that are truly great. I like the smiths just fine but they're all jangle. I can't understand why they get lumped into the post punk category. Is it just because they're British? They sound more like early R.E.M. than any post punk bands.

Radiohead

radiohead isn't even goth

The Smiths is basically what Joy Division would sound like if they were into making happy music

Correct ranking

Joy Division.

Radiohead

Not even part of the same group of dark, moody gawf bands. Radiohead is paired with Oasis, Coldplay and Kasabian

Radiohead

The Fall

Yes, I'm talking about Radiohead user. They don't belong on this thread. Not goth.

The Smiths are far more tolerable than early REM which sounds like someone is pouring molten aluminum inside my ears.

The Smiths take it by far because they don't have to rely on stupid gimmicks (later Cure) or make a shitty excuse about the music being about sadness for it to be shitty (early Cure, Joy Division.) The way often both the guitars and vocals tend to be catchy as fuck in a Smiths song is among the toughest things to achieve in music.

why would joy division be included in this??

Siouxsie & The Banshees

He's so cute, what's he got to be so sad about

Being british

Answering as an old fag who lived through this:

Joy division is my favorite by far
The Cure is easily the most talented and some of their songs should vastly > Joy division but not consistent enough
The Smiths meh. I like music not lyrics, and if you are a music person and not a lyric person the Smiths have very little to offer.

Cringe.

Pere Ubu > PiL and This Heat

basically this

Although I may even place The Smiths above The Cure, simply because of that lack of consistency. Joy division simply defined too much of the era to not be placed on top (New Order > Joy division, though not really relevant to the thread). The Smiths put out consistently good songs and albums. The Cure had hits and are undeniably talented, but I swear half their discography is a snoozefest. They're all great bands, but Joy Division would have to come out on top.

They literally needed filler to finish their first album. Wow, what artists. How irreverent.

If you don't know the backstory, they didn't have enough material on an under 40 minutes album that already have a several minutes long spoken word intro to another song. Therefore, they had the rhythm section loop some awful generic disco beat while they whine nonsense over it under they had fulfilled their contractual obligations.

What a bunch of wankers.

Joy Division > The Cure > The Smiths

yes this

the smiths > joy division > the cure

>muh gated reverb
>muh fake depression
they all suck

>meme punk

by my favourite albums
Pornography > Strangeways > Closer

Joy Division > Smiths

The Cure is overrated garbage that ruined post punk

"PiL > Sex Pistols" = babby's first edgy music conceit.
frankly, a well constructed 3 minute rock song full of instantly satisfying hooks > conceptually blank, atonal, droning pseudo-experimental music that hides its lack of substance with ambiguity.

I guess you're referring to the pop side of their sound.
Pure goth rock era Cure had something the other two didn't: un-ironic emotional high drama with 0 self-consciousness and 0 self-awareness.

The Smiths pioneered sobbing while smirking, which became the worst copout in indie rock.
And Joy Division's lyrics were nothing but vague "situationist sounding" drivel. There's no atmosphere to their music and nobody would give a fuck about them if that spaz didn't neck himself

AHEM

If I had never listened to Captain Beefheart before, Pere Ubu would probably be my favorite band of all time. Because I have, I can't listened to PU without thinking about how hard he's biting TMR.

Attached: Pretty Hate Machine.jpg (1080x1080, 1.05M)

how is this even a question
the smiths of course

based retardbro
go and actually listen to those bands before posting your shitty opinions based on nothing

the cure > the smiths
joy division is irrelevant and their music aged terribly

Joy Divison is the only good band there.

pretty cringe bro

I'm straight so I don't listen to any of those

The Smiths > Joy Division > The Cure but they're all patrician

Except The Smiths wrote the best melodies of the three by far while JD are easily the least conventionally musical due to how sparse their sound is. Anyone who takes Smiths lyrics seriously is an idiot most of them are frivolous

Interpol

He really isn’t though. Pere Ubu’s sound is far darker and more industrial than anything Beefheart has ever done. The later even more experimental stuff comes from when the guy from The Red Krsytal joined, and not only has that dude been in the game before Beefheart, it still sounds nothing like Beefheart.

>he hasn't realized yet that Fodderstompf is actually the 2nd best song on First Issue
>he hasn't even listened to Metal Box or Flowers of Romance in full yet

Ouch. You'll get there, my man. I remember being 19 and feeling the same way. I thought Joy Division and Siouxie and Bauhaus and the Cure were great artists and that PiL were hacks. Once I grew up, I learned how backwards I had it.

Fucking yikes

>>I've never gotten any attention from my father
>which one is best

Joy Division aged the best of the three

>Closer
>aged well

The Cure.

based and checked

Radiohead

Killing Joke

I never said Closer aged well, I said that Joy Division aged the best (which is still true). Almost everything else they put out sounds like it could have been put out today

Joy Division might just be the most overrated band of the 80s

nobody even said anything about post punk you god damn tryhard casual, answer the fucking question asshole
