Hey guys, let's try to make a jazz thread and keep it alive for a while. I just listened to this, very good and obscure '70s jazz/jazz-rock/fusion/whatever

what have you been listening lately?

Classical is better.

I just started getting into jazz about a month ago. So far I've really liked the early Ornette Coleman albums and mid period Mingus and Herbie Hanckock stuff.

Anyone know some albums like Sun Ra - Landiquity or the Mandwishi trilogy? Or at least some good/essential Post-Bop and Fusion stuff. Just anything genuinely nuts would be cool.

Have you heard Rahsaan Roland Kirk? Prepare thyself to deal with a miracle is more in the vein of third stream and Mingus than fusion but it blew my mind when I first heard it, you should give it a spin

Not obscure but was just listening to some ‘70s Keith Jarrett quartet

I have only heard his Shostakovich and jazz standards albums with deJohnette and Peacock, what else can you recommend by him?

That's actually pretty good, thanks

I'm not sure if this guy is really underrated here but still deserves a shine of light on this thread.

Also. if you haven't already, Eric Dolphy's Out to lunch is a must hear

no problem. glad you like it

Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman and Paul Motian. I like Jarrett when he’s playing with others, I tried the Germany concert where he was just by himself for 3 hours and I couldn’t get into it

Why are there so few jazz albums that feature organ, bros? That's not fair

Will do, right after I listen to Black Saint. I've heard all of the other major Mingus releases I believe.

It's on the list.

Thanks.

Am I the only one who might like Live Evil slightly better?

>yeah I love jazz!
Oh cool what’s your favorite jazz album recorded in the last ten years?

So you agree that post-1980 jazz isn't actually worth listening to?

JAZZ IS GARBAGE

FUCK NON CLASSICAL MUSIC

How’s first year treating you user?

Are Adornofags all just pseudo-intellectual teens who are impressed by “big” words?

I’ve never seen anyone actually discuss or defend Adorno’s nonsensical “critique” of jazz. They always just post screenshots or quote it word for word and ignore any refutation of it.

Alain Caron - In / En Concert
Great recent live fusion album. Partially convinced me to buy myself a fretless bass (haven't played bass in years, just guitar and piano).

Also listening/studying Bud Powell and learning some of his solos. I really need to level up my Bebop (on piano).

Who are the best + most exciting jazz pianists working today, Yea Forums?

Craig Taborn
David Virelles
John Escreet
Orrin Evans
Matthew Shipp
David Kikoski
Gary Versace
Jacob Sacks
Luis Perdomo
Aruan Ortiz

Corea still... did some shows with Bela Fleck a few years ago that were cool
Midori did an album with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White that was pretty cool but I haven’t heard her solo work

Yep, adorno is stupid.

So what?

Mehldau is my favorite still.

Though some of my favorite solos are from Aaron Goldberg on Kurt Rosenwinkel's live album The Remedy. I couldn't really dig Goldberg's solo stuff though. But damn, his playing on that Kurt album was unreal. Incredible atmospheric building to the climax of his solo, though the drummer (and to a lesser extent the bassist) is a big part of what made him sound great on that set.

Can we all agree that Branford is the best Marsalis?

Yes

I looooooove Pharaoh Sanders

He’s overrated AF

A Coltrane wannabe but without putting in the hard work that Coltrane did

Totally different sound than Coltrane.

Dude I have never seen anyone else talk about that album. It is amazing.

Yes, it is great, but I just wonder why he didn't make more leader albums?

His tone sounds pretty fucking similar to Trane in this track. Obviously his playing is incredibly different.

These lyrics are pure cringe btw. Always makes me laugh my ass off.

what do you think of vijay iyer? meme?

holy shit dude this is a hip list thank you

best fusion album coming through

check out john ambercrombie-timeless
or pretty much the rest of the ecm catalog

I've never been a Braxton fan but I really like the textures and shapes he conjures here, I like him a lot more on his own, sounds more solemn and austere and the compositions shine more clearly

not that guy, but i think he spent a lot of time teaching. bill stewart was one of his students, for example.

So, what went wrong? was it the LSD?

Attached: 41YnGvoh2ZL.jpg (312x312, 19K)

Goddamn. Nice list m8. The only ones I can think to add are Brad Mehldau and Vijay Iyer, and desu even though I like both of them I can see why other people don’t.

Some of his shit isn’t very good. But his good shit is good.

Rec me your favourite hard bop albums please

Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth - Epicenter

Can you really call yourself a jazz fan if you don’t go to the Village Vanguard at least twice a year?

Personally I would recommend his improvised solo concerts, if you are interested just give me an overall mood and I will suggest his best concert with that mood
