Despite being a "rock group", The Grateful Dead were not popular for their music; even their most popular album has only sold 2 million copies in the past 40 years. That's not possible. The Dead barely had a fanbase outside America. In their whole career, they played that Egypt show and two European tours in pretty small venues and that was it. 98% of their fans are US based, with probably a good 50% of that being SoCal or the Northeast.

And look at their sales numbers in America:
