melodeath is a hybrid of things that don't mix. the whole point of DM was to take metal to its most aggressive form—detuned guitars, blast beats and growls. and poppy melodies are the opposite of all aggressive. if you mix those, either you make growls and detuned guitars sound cheesy and out of place, or you make melody sound cheesy and out of place. it's a mix that simply doesn't work.
DM already has some melody in it, except it's incorporated in DM formula. it serves as solos or to create atmosphere, not as a catchy hook or chorus.

even if taken as separate new genre, these 2 things would simply clash
if you make catchy melodies, at least be consistent. go with clean vocals. do something like Blind Guardian or Helloween. Or something like Iced Earth if you wish to experiment. don't try to mix brutal and dissonant with happy melodies. it's likely not gonna work very well.

I mean poppy sort of melody like, say, In Flames
the point is: melody is good when it enhances music, creates an organic whole with it.
for this reason menacing solos are a staple of DM. they are melodic, technically, but they create atmosphere and add dynamic with hard-hitting riffs. this makes the sound richer and more varied, enhancing both components—making things more evil, more aggressive. the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
but when the whole song is basically pop metal with DM drums and growls, it just doesn't add up. why growl over catchy chorus? why the palm-muted distorted chords when the melody is something like a radio song? why blast beats? it's a mishmash of most aggressive and brutal parts of metal with something poppy and not very metal to begin with. it doesn't hold up together, there's nothing to unify it, no idea behind it.
