The Cure were far more diverse and had 20+ years (3 imaginary boys - wish) of god-tier material as compared with the smiths 4 years. Both good but there's no denying The Cure are better.

These are 3 of my favourite bands. The Smith's were the most consistent, The Cure had the highest highs but also the lowest lows, The Fall were somewhere in between the two on both fronts but they have around 40 albums so you expect some missteps. I'd have to rank them on how often I listen to them.

Also Siouxsie and the Banshees need more love

The cure is fucking overrated and I feel like people say that the cure is better just because Morrissey is a controversial figure. Morrissey is interesting, the same cannot be said about robert smith

The two are roughly the same musically. The Smiths are catchier with better guitar work but the Cure are more adventurous. The Cure are definitely more versatile; the one time the Smiths tried something different it resulted in their worst album, although it's still a good album. The Smiths don't have the low points that the Cure does (Friday I'm in Love). Personally, I find the Smiths to be a more interesting band lyrically. Morrissey's morbid, only somewhat kidding humor might be a bit pretentious but it results in some of the funniest songs around (Nowhere Fast, Bigmouth Strikes Again, Girlfriend in a Coma). That being said
New Order would beat them both if they had stopped making music after the 80's ended. They didn't though.
Wish is a bad album
They have plenty of high points but they also have a bunch of low points and plenty of filler. That's what happens when you have a discography as big as they do.
Siouxsie and the Banshees were far more consistent than the Cure in their initial run, and honestly I prefer Juju to Pornography, but they really started to slowly fizzle out after Dreamhouse while the Cure went on to do The Head on the Door and Disintegration.
Morrissey's initial run of solo albums is quite good too. He's the only member of any of the aforementioned bands whose other material was actually engaging. Robert Smith was never gonna make a Your Arsenal.

The Cure are a singles band. The Smith's worst album (Strangeways Here We Come) is still an 8/10 and superior to most albums of that decade.

Tough call, but I'm gonna have to go with The Cure

New Order latest album is fantastic. They also had some decent stuff in the 00's.

Tutti Frutti was a great song, but Peter Hook really was notable by his absence on that record.
