no gramps, we all play strandbergs through line 6s here
Anthony Richardson
Govan said he switched over to based Gibson™ a couple of weeks ago because vintage 50s style humbuckers provided a cleaner base to build high gain tones with his Fractal Axe-FX II!
You mean gibson paid him to buy their guitar instead of just doing a pickup swap and he's currently enjoying slightly more endorsement money than he did before
Beginner here. Is using my pinky finger as an anchor (having it always lightly pressing the pickboard) while picking bad form?
Joseph Gonzalez
Your picking hand should always be floating
Isaiah Wood
Or it should be anchored. Depends on who you ask. It all comes down to personal preference.
Mason Brown
both incorrect
Easton Lopez
So just choose one method and stick to it? I pick worse when it's floating.
Anthony Russell
no you idiot
Matthew Myers
Then what?
Carson Cox
Are Sheratons nicer than D'Angelico's?
Wyatt Price
yes
Sebastian Campbell
I did that when I first started because that's how my first guitar teacher taught me. My second one made me break the habit. It's a decent way to learn if you're a complete beginner. But as soon as you play any intermediate-level stuff it's going to be very limiting.
Jace Bell
Thank you. I'll stop doing it.
Joseph Rodriguez
Plenty of pro players anchor. It's just a preference. If something works for you, then it can't be wrong.
Connor James
Discord when...
Tyler Miller
Who anchors? Not being a dick, legitimately curious.
Brody Taylor
All of Ted Nugent's guitars are worn in the same spot from anchoring during chuggy rhythm guitar. That chuggy rhythm intro to Stranglehold? Anchoring.
I place my pinky along the underside of whatever pickup is active for control. works for me. it may not be proper but at least i'm not anchoring my thumb along the top edge of the neck like superbads.
Jaxon Wright
Michael Angel Batio, Alex Lahio, Kirk Hammet, Joe Satriani, Dave Mustaine, Chris Shiflett, John Petrucci, Jeff Loomis. I can keep going.
I mean I jammed out with other people. Not by myself
Jaxson Sanchez
Okay that's fine, the CGI is pretty bad anyways and it's more of a video game than an anime, but now I want a horizon when I was already saving up for a strandberg original 7.
I'm a broke bedroom warrior using plugins and a line 6 spider to play. Is the Boss Katana a meme for gigging? Its got effects and shit built in and I could get a couple pedals to help it out.
Mason Taylor
lol and all looked at each other like this when you started playing
you are now imagining three neckbeards randomly shredding pentatonic boxes through boutique pedals
Thomas Lewis
I actually got compliments. Sorry baby i dont use pedals.
Jace Jones
Get a marshall origin instead.
Elijah Wilson
vocaroo.com/i/s1hepaDJ6dzx imagine three or four of these in one room >I actually got compliments they thought it was amazing you were brave enough to be out considering you forgot your helmet or something?
lmao hey what kind of jam session is over before 10:30pm my guy? did they tell you they were packing it in hoping you'd go home so they could keep playing without you or something?
I have a tablature but there are parts where notes are 10 freaking frets apart, makes no sense to play that but maybe if I move it an octave I can play it.
Jose Butler
Not him but you do understand you'd have to be able to play before could anyone could take you seriously, right? For goodness sake even Sam mogs you, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
yea i dont dig on the black hardware either >tfw spending $1500+ on a mememachine >just to replace the hardware and pickups as soon as it arrives i know better thats why i havent pulled the trigger yet. i'd like a fanned 7 to play with tunings but dot dot dot
Just move your hand over, it's not piano that shit's easy on guitar
Charles Allen
don't buy the djent stick if your heart is not as black and dirty as the notes you're going to play and you aren't prepared for your guitar to match that
Active pickups are a pleb filter. You must be a skilled player with a more than decent amp to make them sound good, but if you are one, they're amazing.
Camden Cook
aw fuck you dude you don't like exactly what I like
Elijah Long
While I appreciate the signal responsiveness, i hate the lack of dynamic range, especially around the midtones.
Anthony Morgan
Stop relying on dynamic range to sound good pleb
Or, have two guitars for playing different styles instead of trying to make one for everything. Definitely don't try to have actives and passives in one guitar, the combined outputs don't really work.
Dominic Wood
>stop relying on tone to sound good not even him but the fuck?
Aaron White
stop relying on sound to make music
Alexander Allen
poor shitposter is poor
Joshua Jackson
right
James Howard
Looking for a good single pickup guitar to fit that niche. Whats the better choice? Been eyeing a 2018 sg jr. Or a mij esquire
Nolan Jenkins
Yeah, fuck tone. If guitar tone was important what are pedals for? Buying good pedals is more important than having good tone.
Jose Long
For gigs I pre a rockman X100 through a peavey A220 head with an 18" Black Widow cab
Rate + what are you using live? Bedroom guitarist need not reply.
Aaron Jackson
them joints butt ugly tho but for real, id like a jag for the effect versitility (while not being a basedmaster) or a gretsch for the convenience of being able to practice without an amp, and the fact that i find it the most attractive (aesthetic and feel-wise) of the two, but i feel like id be limited in range of sounds help me out here
I've been playing guitar for 14 years and I'm still trying to figure out SRV's appeal. Like, when I listen to his music, I just hear Hendrix licks played at 5x speed and they just don't grip me the way Jimi's playing does. Can someone explain?
Ryan Parker
Jazzmaster bridge is still giving me buzzing problems even after I put 11s flatwound on them. Which should i invest in: staytrem or mastery bridge? Any anons here ever use both?
Brayden Kelly
Are there any goals laid out for you on any of the learning bass stuff?
Like how justenguitar has almost a list of things you should do and be able to do comfortably before trying to progress, is there anything like that for talkingbass/SBL?
Alexander Hernandez
You mean finding the note close to your hand position? Just find the note lmao you should know this by now
Why are you forcing yourself to figure out his appeal? If you listened enough and you still think it's fast Hendrix licks taht don't bite as much then just let it be, maybe SRV isn't your thing.
Lucas Green
explain why you like SRV even though he sucks dick and i'll think about it
Classical guitars are for autistic manbabbys that moan when they're dropping a kaka because they think it's Andres Segovia's cock, you missed that part
i've been playing for about two years now but i've never tried to get better with a pick, i can only play fingerstyle and i was wondering if it's really necessary, are there things i cannot play without a pick ? so far the only thing i struggle with are fast rythm leads like these: vocaroo.com/i/s0DnUcc7ghd7 but i think i could manage this with some more practice, what do you think ?
also who's the guy with anime eyes on his guitar, i always see his pictures
Grayson Morales
StayTrem. The Mastery costs four times as much and actually doesn't let you adjust intonation independently.
I have a warped sense of reality ever since I started lurking here and other forums more and more and now see everything as complete shit tier where there is always a fault to pick and every company is trying to pull one over on me some way or another and it means I’ll never upgrade my own shitplank because lol what’s the point or buy custom shop.
help.
Jose Anderson
What guitars do you have and what styles do you play, user?
If we're going utilitarian here, all you need is a guitar that plays well and has good quality pickups.
Alexander Turner
No memeing, you should buy something you've played and feels good and comfortable. Price is secondary, because you can almost always find the same model of guitar for cheaper. So:
1. Go to a guitar store and try them out 2. Decide on how they feel and sound, not how they look 3. Find the same guitar online for cheaper with a return policy if something goes wrong 4. Enjoy gaming the overpriced guitar industry
I hated this anime because they barely talk about guitars or music and yet they already have expensive ass equipment and automatically sound good in performance despite having episodes where they're too lazy to practice. Getting much more enjoyment out of Beck because the main character would be borrowing a guitar or fix up an old broken guitar and you'll actually have some character development. I guess I was a fool to expect some depth out of shit moe.
Zachary Wright
I tried to watch K-ON but nobody played guitar in it, they just went to the beach or similar unrelated bullshit.
The only types of guitarists I've met are ones who are ten times worse than me (and I'm mainly a bassist) who think they're ten times better than me and look down on me like gum on their shoe, or ones who are ten times better than me and look down on me like gum on their shoe. Is there no one who is realistic about being average and wanting to improve? Christ, why does the Dunning Kruger effect have to be so true?
I wonder if I can learn guitar over the next few weeks. I already know the bass and I have loads of free time. How much should I practice/day
Juan Reyes
I'm probably ten times worse as you and I know it.
Levi Nguyen
you can't hear the difference, it just takes fewer truss rod turns to keep straight
a 3 or 5 piece neck is basically the same thing but doesn't require the destruction of old growth forests to satisfy memers who would fail to recognize the fancy guitar made entirely from one slab of quartersawn wood by gibson as sounding better than a mid-range ibanez with the same scale length and a similar pickup configuration
if expensive guitars are how you let people know you're better than them you might want to try getting into expensive cars instead, because with a porsche GT3 you are actually getting what you pay for and not a wooden placebo
Jordan Gonzalez
Lmao I get people that peg me as a bass player and 9/10 I’m years ahead of them on guitar. When you find a musician that’s on your level, 9/10 they like different music than you.
Evan Hernandez
I think Scotty would have a thing or two to say about Porsches
>the engine is towards the back, where it's ideal for the weight distribution of the car, but where it's horrible for hobby mechanics to work on >it's expensive >you don't need a fast, luxurious car >now the toyota celica, that was a car >if you aren't a profressional race car driver stay away from those sports cars. they break down more often and burn too much gas, and speeding is illegal! >these are for rich people who own multiple cars. track days? you'll just wreck it! if you aren't rich you're going to make yourself poor >get a toyota celica
if scotty reviewed guitars he'd tell you to buy a cheap acoustic because electric guitars are too much trouble
>the amp is just one more thing to break!
Joseph Bennett
>mfw acoustic guitars are more trouble (muh humidity)
I like to think I'm pretty realistic about where I'm at. I've been playing for a long time, have a pretty solid command of music theory, and can play most styles of modern guitar music. Most of my practice routine is dedicated to learning and applying harmonic idea to my improvising vocabulary.
Most of the other guitarists I meet are pretty specialized, either dedicated metal or blues or indie players with skills developed specifically to play those genres. So sometimes I run into a guy with insane alternate picking technique or really killer blues praying that totally kicks my ass, although there's usually not much beyond that.
Daniel Johnson
I don’t know if I want to learn guitar or bass more but I want to pick one.
Jayden Harris
Go away dumb faggot
Isaac Turner
I've been playing 6-string guitar for like 13 years now, but I want to go out and buy a 4-string bass for the first time, what should I know?
Andrew Nguyen
Pick my future $400 guitar waifu:
Ibanez RG450dx or Harley Benton Fusion-II HSH
If you have a similar guitar under $500 to suggest I'll consider it.
I like the Harley Benton, not a big fan of Ibanez in general though. If you're looking for a decently-priced super Strat, ESP/LTD has a couple that sound good and are pretty well-built too for under $500.
Jose Williams
I can already tell you play guitar. Why are bass players always friendly chads?
Parker Morales
Maybe you should become a bass player and find out
Nicholas Walker
I have that exact same guitar and love it. That being said you should really go try it out if you can.
He'd probably tell you to get the Toyota of guitars: Ibanez, he'd probably do a based vid on his 89 RG550 that is insanely playable to this day. Based scotty should be a guitarist
Carter Murphy
None of your business?
Robert Hall
Lol want to meet up and make out?
Sebastian Reed
don't fucking post it then autist
Nicholas Baker
It’s not my fault you don’t know who Sam is newfriend
Is there any point to amp as a bedroom player or should I just use software thx
Landon Peterson
Is there any way to make a natural stained body a lighter shade without sanding it off?
Cameron Morris
The actual amplification circuitry isn't very important. Software can copy it 1:1 with very little latency whether it's a modern solid state amp or a 50 year old marshall tube amp. But a proper modeler will have less latency and better output quality than an off the shelf laptop or computer with an onboard/cheap sound card. Traditional amps are good for superior portability, little setup complexity, and more stability than amp sims in software. Modelers are better than both and what all the pros use (and they like to laugh at fans who say "dood do u use a marshall or an orange" before they see the axe FX and then go "eh, sounded it a little soulless actually")
But ultimately something has to make noise or you just hear a bunch of tinny string sounds and little fret rattles, because electrics aren't meant to be acoustics. So whatever is processing the signal, make sure you get a good speaker or pair of headphones.
Aaron Collins
What’s your favorite fuzz pedal?
Jonathan Wilson
big muff or any half decent clone
the cheaper the clone the more authentic your black metal and stoner doom tone will be
Angel Diaz
I just grabbed a fuzzrite clone and it sounds amazing in conjunction with the big muff. Tops off the highs perfectly when you need to cut through the bassy-ness of the muff whether you’re soloing live or overdubbing
Isaac Cox
rec a $200-300 amp
Christopher Clark
Recently came into possession of a Bass guitar. I consider myself a somewhat intermediate guitarist. Is there any good tutorials for bass geared toward people who are already guitarists?
Jackson Wilson
Small used tube amp
Brandon Hughes
mustang GT 40
Asher Cooper
since the path of a simple tube amp is preamp > fx loop > poweramp, if i stick a volume booster on the fx loop will it distort the poweramp tubes?
lmao I live in a fucking devastatingly dry climate, and you know how much work it is to keep my guitar humidified? >keep it in the case when I'm not playing it >keep my special humidity sponge thingy (was less than $10) in the case >soak my special humidity sponge thingy once every couple of weeks that's it. if you consider that a lot of upkeep you must be one seriously lazy motherfucker
I would go direct with a volume pedal, but I don't think it would make too much of a difference either way.
Josiah White
I just realized the staytrem has stopped production in the US as of last year and they only ship in the UK What do? Im looking for a 9.25 radius right, since 7.25 is like for a jaguar
Hi guys so I went to a store and tried some yamaha basses like you said. BB234, BB434, BB434M. At this point there isn’t a whole lot of difference since I don’t actually know how to play but they all feel comfortable and nice in my hand also the rosewood and maple necks sounded the same to me, am I deaf or is there really a difference?
Which do I buy?
I can either buy cheapest 234. Mid range 434. Or just go all out and buy a 734a even though I don’t know if I’ll get to the point where I’ll need the active stuff yet.
Blake White
Start with the cheap one and see if you actually enjoy playing. You can always upgrade later
Hunter Wilson
i honestly always go used because there's always the chance that when you open up the amp, you might find some kaka in the circuitry. i bought an old fender amp from a pawn shop a couple of months ago, opened it up to check out the tubes, and found a big ol' piece of stinky sharty assy farty kaka. It didn't seem to have any diarrhea on it, so it was pretty prestine.
I'm never selling this. the kaka tone is fucking A1
Leo Thomas
>cheap guitar >weird ass multi-effects from China >doesn't sound bad
Pretty much every demo video of the Mooer GE200 makes it sound like shit. Is it actually good?
You can load IR through it. If im not mistaken, the only other pedal that loads IR (and that is its only purpose) is almost the same price of the Mooer. That alone makes the Mooer interesting.
Luke Gray
what the absolute fuck are you talking about
Colton Lopez
Mooer is actually just a computer like a raspberry pi, right?
Hey guys, got some questions about ground loops. I have an unusual amount of noise coming from my Axe FX, even at low settings (i've posted in here in the past about it.) I have noise even when my guitar is unplugged. I currently have my guitar in a shop because the tech seemed to think maybe my pickups had some bad wiring, and he's checking it out. So maybe it's that. So I just want to confirm, if I hear a hum or buzzing on a tone, with low gain (like 2.5/10), even when the guitar is UNPLUGGED, do I have a ground loop?
Austin Rogers
Yes
Austin Barnes
This was actuslly quite informative. Thank you
Cameron Turner
Ooooh.
Anthony Bell
Hmmmmm, looks hard work.
Ethan Stewart
Damn. So I bought a ground test just in case and it says I have ground. However, my Axe Fx goes through a furman power conditioner first. Can that cause it? I also bought a tripp-lite Line Isolator, but it did absolutely nothing no matter what way I set it up.
Anthony Clark
Awesome but you'll be changing the strings every other day.
That's potential.
re-volting.
Nicholas Richardson
Instead of being gnarly, compose a melody. (i assume).
Jaxon Morris
yuk. do not do.
Camden Myers
Just wondering does anyone else here just love natural guitars both gloss/satin for the wood grain over any type of nitro/poly colour or is that just me?
Carter Walker
>changing the strings every other day Why?
Ryan Wilson
I can't quite see from the photograph but if it is as I think, the bend on the string on the bridge is quite steep and *thunk* *thunk* it *thunk* snaps the strings *thunk*
It happens basically like this: your axe fx is connected to the ground, and it's connected to something else, right? And that thing is connected to the ground too. Now, if you're using just a coaxial cable, it ties the ground of the axe fx to your other device in another point, creating the loop.
The way I understand it is basically pic related, now what I'd suggest is using the balanced outputs (XLR connectors), since they're engineered in a way that cancels any kind of noise that is picked up by either line
I do use the XLR outputs from the Axe Fx. I should also mention that I don't use it with an amp, I actually just plug it into the input of an audio interface, a scarlett 2i2, and that's it. I basically just record directly from there to my computer. Is this still an issue then? Technically, only my axe fx and my studio monitors are going through the Furman Power Conditioner. Thanks for helping btw.
Charles Rogers
It doesn't need to be a guitar amp, any kind of amplifier will be similar in the way the input signal is handled
The Axe FX has an USB out, doesn't? Does it still pick up hum if you use it instead of the scarlett?
Btw the balanced output can still cause a ground loop since it has a ground line too, some recording devices have a ground lift switch just to break a loop
Unfortunately like I said earlier the tech still has it. I was just feeling antsy not being able to play or figure this out so I want to do as much as I can while it's gone. Currently all I'm doing is noticing that when I have my axe fx on, even on a mostly low-gain preset I have, that it makes a lot of noise. I have 3 cables, 2 balanced and one unbalanced, and they all make the noise, but it was definitely translating over to the guitar itself. I also tried the Axe FX by itself with headphones a few months ago and it was mostly the same.
I did just try the AXE FX by itself, and the noise is still there.
Josiah Sanders
UPPER CASE LETTERS ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO ME, SORRY ABOUT YOUR EXTRA CHROMOSOMES
from the tests i've done before this, it really does seem like it's the unit. I should also mention I sent back the axe-fx to fractal to look at a while ago for something related to low output. They guaranteed me it was totally fine and sounded normal, and sent it back to me. I'm assuming your pic is what it SHOULD look like?
Hunter Price
>POSTS IN ALL CAPS >CALLS OTHER PEOPLE RETARDED REALLY ACTIVATES THE ALMONDS M8
Charles Garcia
It's what it's supposed to look like, the thing is, when designing a complex pcb like this it's pretty difficult to not end up with loops. You use tricks like using more than 2 layers (the axe fx seems to use 4 or more layer boards with the signals going in the inner two), you stitch the groundplanes with vias around signal traces to shield them, etc. Now with the power supply unit looking like that without any sort of shielding it's not difficult to guess where the noise is coming from.
Julian Phillips
is there any real difference between 2 and 4 piece body other than looks? same with poplar v alder?
Christopher Wilson
Sorry i'm not totally following. Are you saying with the power supply exposed like that it can cause some interference issues or something? What should be done about it?
Leo Stewart
>Are you saying with the power supply exposed like that it can cause some interference issues or something?
It definitely can
>What should be done about it? It's a design flaw, without getting rid of the unit there's not much you can do about it other than recording a noise profile and removing it from whatever you record.
Joshua Hall
Honestly i've been thinking about abandoning it a lot because i can't really get all that great of tones out of it anyway, it actually sounds kind of weak to me too, with little sustain on almost all presets and things like harmonics really don't ring out even on high gain. But that's an expensive ass thing to just forget about, you know? So I'm tryin my best to just get it to work for months now before I just give up and buy a helix or something.
Elijah Watson
My palm mutes are terrible on Les Paul. Is my technique just shit or are meme-o-matic bridges bad for palm muting? I'm talking rock-type palm mutes.
Bentley Adams
It's do-able but it's probably not the best choice for war ensemble.
Leo Foster
honestly, i would just fart a giant log of kaka out of my butt. take some laxative and eat some bread so that your kaka is cakey.
pretty much keep it in a jar and smear it on the side of your hand so that it's poopy.
then palm mute with the power of asshole shit
Joseph Collins
You should have some sort of roughage really.
Robert Ross
just work on your technique, the type of bridge you have shouldn't impede your ability to palm mute
Gavin Harris
I got like a 1960s Gibson EB0 bass that I think has a warped neck and the knobs are a little finicky. I don't play bass really, but I need one to start practicing on. I don't know how much it'd cost to get this one repaired/setup, but someone told me it could be $200+. Should I get it repaired or use that money on a beginner bass for now? I'm not a bass player, but I need one to start practicing on
Replacing all old the electrics shouldn't cost half that. A warped neck might (does your guitar have a truss rod?) adjust out with care . Buy a book on guitar maintenance.
Chase Morris
This guitar has one too many strings.
Carter Smith
>Buy a book on guitar maintenance. Hell, you can learn most guitar maintenance shit from Youtube.

Gabriel Bennett
Yeah the setup was a lot of it. At my GC all the Epi's are set up terribly but the Gibsons are usually set up pretty well. That 335 had a ridiculously high action and the neck didn't feel any better than an Epi.
