there's also the emotional monotony; I'm a jazz fag now, and artists in those genres allow/ed themselves a much greater range of emotional expression
you often get pretty much the full range of human emotions on a single jazz album, which simply is not the case with metal...
I mean, I'll still throw on To Mega Therion or Onward to Golgotha, or whatever...I guess I'm just saying that metal bands generally don't offer the emotional diversity that the jazz greats do, but that's probably true of pretty much any genre...

Metal is prone to trapping itself in its identity. A band only does depressive shit, or hyper-aggressive shit, or whatever. The point is that they often have one specific thing that they stick to pretty rigidly. There are, of course, exceptions, but the norm is for bands to greatly restrict themselves, and anything else is seen as "untrue".

Nonetheless, Opeth opened the door for people who wanted to signal to the world how profound and different they were, and now most bands are tinged with the same simpering pander that makes this music sickly sweet and an inch deep.

People are terrible at separating reason and emotion, so they will believe that a piece of meaningless entertainment is profound. It can express emotions, but not non-musical ideas, other than through lyrics, but lyrics are a terrible place to go for insights about the world n shit. Read science and/or philosophy for that shit. If anything is legitimately deep, it's things like that. Music gives us beauty, a sense of meaning, and catharsis, but there's nothing truly deep about any of it.

That's what I was getting at, yeah. Tons of modern deathcore crosses over into brutal death metal so that distinction does kinda need to be made at least if you're trying to teach someone the basics.
Slam is cheesy as fuck like already mentioned, but Devourment is cream of the crop slam along with Jenovavirus, Blunt Force Trauma, and Dripping. There's other stuff that's very good too but slam as a genre is very hit or miss.

This record is coming out at the perfect time in my life. The connections to Buddhist concepts are so powerful. Samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth. Dukkha, the inevitable suffering of life, potentially for eternity. Venom Prison's sound evolved into something as powerful as the subject matter for this record.

No, Suffocation can't be considered slam since they don't have enough slams. People just really liked that one riff and made whole songs with riffs like that.

While not a "slam" band, they do slam occasionally. Traditional slam bands reuse the same slam formula song in and song out.

No, they're technical brutal death, but that riff in Liege of Inveracity is pretty widely recognized as the first slam riff. After that more slams started popping up in brutal death (Internal Bleeding's debut from '95 for example) but it took a while until full slam records happened. The Repudilation demo from '96 is one of the first full slam releases but the first LP is pretty generally said to be Molesting the Decapitated by Devourment.
