At the Heart of Winter was my favourite Immortal for years, but recently I've been enjoying their debut and Pure Holocaust more. They really are a good band though, even their 2018 release was great, if not a little by the numbers.

Their latest was basically a rehash of their old style but low quality and boring.

It's exactly what the band needed at the time, but it hasn't held up for me as well as their early stuff. The guitar tone is so sterile and devoid of any feeling or heaviness (but peter tagtgtgtgren compressed it to about as loud as it would go so people mistake it for being heavy and good sounding).

The prospect of another one-man atmospheric black metal band with songs about nature and solipsism isn't bound to excite anyone at first glance; even so, Veldes seemed to stick above the sea of mediocrity, thanks in large part to multi-instrumentalist Tilen Šimon's talent with composition. While Skyward offers a similarly bleak and bleary experience to its predecessor, it's with some disappointment I find myself largely underwhelmed by Veldes' second offering. While it's often the lot of EPs to supplement an artist's primary work in some way, it's discouraging that Skyward has scarcely attempted to improve on the formula on To Drown in Bleeding Hope. Rather, we have a half hour of music that is too innocuous to be anything but atmospheric, and too leisurely to be entirely engaging. It is not a failure so much as it is a discouraging dip into the middling brand of quality bands of this ilk are prone to putting out..

While listening to this release, I noticed myself almost in a trance while listening. It is extremely calming and meditative music while at the same time remaining rooted within the black metal veins. I have found that while working on something frustrating or after a long day at work, Skyward is the best thing to have playing in the background because it keeps you cool and collective instead of getting your blood pumping. I attribute these feelings to the chord progressions used on almost all songs, especially the intro track. I have listened to thousands of albums and with that, thousands of intro's and this one is by far my favorite. It has a melancholic vibe with the downward chord structure and the way the piano melody intertwines with the guitar. It is a gorgeous representation of how well these types of intro's fit within metal music. When the black metal kicks in, it still keeps the piano at the forefront for most of the time and that adds so much to the music.

Just listen to the arpeggios during the chorus on "Where Dark and Light Don't Differ" and the solo 6 minutes into the title track. It's extremely bland, just like the rest of the harmonic "progressions" are on this album. This album would be much better with more disharmonic riffs to break up the harmonies once in a while. The opening riff in "Tradegies..." is great though.

HA! This is the most outrageous insult of Black Metal yet, and it hurts mostly because this band used to be great. I don’t think that anybody could have predicted that Gorgoroth would have gone techno, which is basically just what they did on this CD. I’m not even sure if this was intended to be a joke or if it was actually intended as a serious release… Either way it is obvious that this band puts no effort at all in their music anymore. EVERYTHING on this CD is way below the average standard and I can barely imagine a band losing talent so fast… Maybe they did it on purpose - to rake in the cash and laugh at all the people who actually bought this CD, or maybe they did it just to get out a record as fast as they could, obviously without any apparent care for the music on it. Either way, they win and you lose… Maybe if we get everybody to boycott this CD they’ll release something better next time (but I think it will be a stern challenge, maybe even impossible, to get much worse then this…)… Until then, let us start the boycott!

As a band that espoused a transgressive, hedonistic LaVeyish egoist/"will to power" type of satanism and actually wrote lyrics about rituals involving murdering children, there's no "separation of the art and the artist" possible when it comes to Inquisition and Dagon's pedophilia. The inherent limitation of metal we're beginning to see is that it's a giant game of chicken--it's all about flirting with "danger" without actually fully comitting to embracing it. Real danger, mind you, not the sort of "kill christ, attack the church" schlock that has never actually resulted in anybody losing their job, being kicked by paypal/their bank, or otherwise being deplatformed.

Metal seems to be about flying as close as you can to that "sun" without getting burned. Inquisition got burned. Inquisition got burned, Varg got burned, the entire NSBM scene got burned. For that, I sorta respect them, even if they're terrible people.

At the end of the day, bands like Tool are more honest and culturally urgent than the pseudo-danger of death/black metal. The only thing keeping people from understanding that are contemporary scene politics, which will die in time.
