In terms of pure atmosphere, Dungeon Synth and incorporated synth in Black Metal are the most Kvlt things there are.

For example, take Det Som Engang Var. The opening and the synth parts that feature throughout the song really set the mood and tone of everything. Personally it allows my imagination to wander and create worlds aroun me way before the guitars kick in.

I like the writing on it a lot more and it's an album that has sentimental value on top of being great in its own right. The only weakness it has is its lackluster production, but otherwise it's better than anything else they've done.

Dark Tranquillity, and since they churned out a shitload of albums they count as many than one band. At least to me, they have different styles without drifting too far afield, like In Flames did. Maybe the best melodeath band or the second bast after Kalmah to me.

They were always shit and have 0 good albums, fuck off.

I can see why people would dislike a lot of their output before the Exercises In Futility album. It sounds a lot like the kind of melodic black metal associated with Dissection, Sacramentum, and Vinterland. But at the same time on those records they would often hold onto a riff/section too long compared to those classic bands to where it would feel like too much repetition, a lot of their multiguitar parts aren't as theatrical as those classic bands, and the songs were structurally much more straightforward. The result to many make Mgla seem like a pale imitation.

But I don't think many dislike Exercises In Futility. Mgla finally kinda has their own style on this album where there's some tricks you may recognize from 2nd wave black metal and even some you may recognize from a band like Deathspell Omega (but no jazzy chords.) The end result has made for something very much fan acclaimed, but I don't think it will reach at absolute top heights of the 2nd wave because the end result is not as catchy as the 2nd wave stuff instead it's got a darker feel to it.

DT was close to being good, but like almost all melodeath bands they suffer greatly from "bored singer syndrome." Meaning the vocalist doesn't play an instrument so he has nothing to do during a song except fill every fucking second with monotonous barks. A good singer knows when to pull back and let the music do the talking, especially in extreme metal where the vocals don't have any melodic function.

Everything on Anthems takes more advantage of what the band offers to deliver a more "complete" experience. The synths don't feel like a gimmick anymore, the synth parts are more robust. Guitars and drums also just deliver more variety in riffing. Does the end result not have the "atmosphere" of In The Nightside Eclipse? Sure, but In the Nightside Eclipse didn't do atmosphere that well either, it's just riff, riff, riff, riff and all the riffs were samey/technical with it just feeling like a display of boring technicality.

Norther would be higher because of the technicality but their lyrics are so childish and something an edgy pre-teen would like, at most. The lyrical part is not at all thought over and only incidentally tackled as something to add to the instrumental. The other bands I know too little about or they aren't worthy of being there because they are too bland.

Why is CoB garbage too? Is it pop too? Dark Tranquillity has well thought lyrics (it's MELOdeath and they aren't supposed to be about gore, anatomy and that horror atmosphere overall). You're too whimsical.

Compare CoB and other garbage tier melodeath bands to this and you'll see why.

Pop music doesn't have constantly developing melodies the way a track like Punish My Heaven by DT does. Pop's most prominent melodic parts come from the vocals, not the guitars. Especially not as fancy as a lot of what DT does, which is more in line with stuff from the likes of Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and Metallica. Though it wouldn't surprise me that someone as close minded as you wouldn't be able to realize that. This inability to appreciate a certain kind of metal due to misconceptions about accessibility to similarity to non-metal doesn't make you a more hardcore metal fan, just one who is too close minded to be able to appreciate anything that isn't boring colorless blunt riffs.

These guys predate Goatmoon by a decade, and the reason it may sound like death metal is because of its melodical nature and the fact that early on both death and black were really similar, but then went their own ways and changed considerably.

I don't think Anthems sounds like a band at all. It's the first major step towards Emperor becoming an Ihsahn solo project. The indulgence of ideas, particularly in the overwrought synth arrangements, are not tempered by the primitive power chord riffs of Samoth, nor the no-frills aggression of Faust. And I find it strange you'd call ITNE a technical riff soup, since that's exactly what most of Anthems is to an even greater degree. Most of the melodies on this are pretty boring compared to DT's and COB's earlier work. Production values lack oomph as well. No point in being raw when you lose that.

Of course he'll be attracted to rawness because he's in for the edge and not for the quality of the music. What's baffling me is that he runs down other's preferences, but this behaviour usually goes hand in hand with being a snobbish edgelord.

I find the better 2nd wave bands defer the sentimental bits until later in the song, so it has some kind of build up. Like the first song on Setherial's Nord has this riff a few minutes in that would be laughably cheesy if it was right at the beginning. This is why I never liked Vinterland, they also give you too much sentimentality right out the gate.

70s Priest is accepted because of the time it was made. We all ignore the fact that "Beyond the Realms of Death" sounds like fucking Bad Company.

Was having a gazillion technical ideas Ihsahn's mainly? Yeah. Does it still make for a far more colorful, interesting listen with personality at the end of the day? Yup. I have no issues with technicality, it's just that it's used to write boring mostly fast riffs in ITNE meanwhile it's used to give Anthems more variety in riffs to ultimately make it feel so majestic, grandiose, and romantic. From what I have heard it was the band members that really wanted Ihsahn to chill with this shit.

Well if you think ITNE riffs are boring, we just wont see eye to eye. The production obscures a lot, but where Ihsahn shined as a musician is how he took these pretty normal black metal riffs and injected all sorts of insane chord voicings and dissonance to make them more interesting. But he never disrupts the pace of the song to add his circus music or "epic" clean sung moments, but for the end of the album.

Are you saying that if Dreamer Deceiver was released today it would not be good? Cuz that track is still sick as fuck.

Also, if we are talking about 'cheesy riffs' at start in the 90s, The Somberlain t/t is up there and I would argue in terms of being more emotional, so is Dunkelheit.

That's the thing, except a couple songs like Black Wizards, the pace stays samey in ITNE. It makes the music feel boring and one dimensional.
