How come prog used to be so mainstream despite being relatively inaccessible and complex? It seems like in every other era people just listened to the most accessible form of music, even during jazz golden era the most popular styles where the most danceable forms. What made the late 60s and 70s different and could something like prog ever enter the mainstream again? Was it all the acid?

rock music sold

Rock music sold in the 80s, 90s and even early 2000s but prog wasn't mainstream at that time.

>Why did Prog and psych rock get so popular during the late 60's and early 70's
>Was it all the acid?
Yeah it was. Hell, even listening to the songs while sober always made me think that you needed to do a hit or drop acid to get its meaning and the feel behind it. One good example is "Close to the Edge" by Yes which debuted during the 70's and was successful because it improved on the acid vibe after their previous album

Prog died in the 1990s because it couldn't compete with the new forms of rock coming out.

There were some good stuff here and there

King Crimson were on the verge of being the top concert draw in Europe when Red was released. A couple of years later U.K. drew huge audiences in the states for outdoor concerts.

People forget how prominent album-oriented FM used to be.

That was before the negrification of Western society

The average IQ is now like 10 points lower than in the late 60s

I don't think it's that, back in the 40s, 50s and 60s black people played complex and interesting jazz music and where generally well spoken. Sure, you had rock and roll which was simpler and catchier but there will always be simple and catchy music. I just think music in general became more disposable over the years.

"Ladies of the Road"
you are talking shit

>Released in October 1974, Red spent only one week on the British charts, at No. 45

All Yes's albums from 1971 to 80 got into the UK top 10, same in America except for Yes Album and Drama

who the fuck thinks prog rock is inaccessible and complex.

Yes released a ton of great albums in the seventies.
