The point of these threads is to encourage exploration, by listening to and discussing albums we've not heard before. Typically, this is done by making a chart of albums, then listening to and discussing one album from the chart each day. Expand your horizons!
awww yeah daily >Ambrose Akinmusire - Origami Harvest Hip-hop touched jazz, trumpeter Ambrose has mr Kool AD on the mic and a nice backing crew including saxophonist Walter Smith III (who just put out a solid classics+standards record in "Twio"). Out of all the youngish west coast jazz kiddies who got laurels a la spots on TPAB I dig Ambrose the most. Worth a listen, 7/10 >Félicia Atkinson & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Limpid as the Solitudes Collab resulting in an effective ambient/drone/field recording etc album. First two tracks do a nice job of inter-playing relaxing nature & familiar around-the-house sounds w uneasy drone and endless metallic chirps, building in tension until letting you go to enjoy just the former. Third track's nice, last song brings it together. 6/10
I've liked everything Jefre has put out but DD has officially BURIED this release for me, based tastemaker
Thomas Martinez
Jefre's solo stuff is lovely and lush and dense and ethereal, this isn't nearly as pleasant listen but it is memorable and builds off some of the elements on the previous collab he had w Felicia. Worth checking out, i just wont be returning to it outside the 3rd track personally
Joshua Turner
>kenneth higney - attic demonstration an experimental folkish rock record that really slaps, the opener features wild vocals that work in letting the listener know the outsider nature of this music. the following tracks have more common singer-songwriter structures but the musci that accompains it is still a trip that reminds me of the shaggs. 3.5
>bobby brown - the enlightening beam of axonda droney and ritual-esque at times this folk record results very interesting, bobby's voice is certainly one of the main highlights of the album, spoken word and chants merge perfectly with the slow and laidback music creating an eerie atmosphere. 3.5
I’ve been really loving Zurria’s performance lately. Flute + electronic based extreme reinterpretations of modern and minimalist composers, drawing out completely different moods at will. They’re almost original compositions, smearing the line between composer and performer. His two releases on Die Schaetel are gold as well.
Alvin Curran - Canti e vedute del giardino magnetico Jacques Brel - Ces gens-là Soft Machine - Third Christina Kubisch - Night Flights Gabriel Ledoux - Le vide parfait
Joseph Murphy
also i went and bought books really excited for bear its pretty short but its the one about a librarian having sex with a bear that won the highest literary award in canada
aphrodite's child - 666 Ryuichi Sakamoto - Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto World Domination Enterprises - Let's Play Domination Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
hope you boys havent heard em backups: animal slaves - dog eat dog harmonium - histoire sans paroles
Last bump for today. Here's the complete chart for anyone who wants to use it >really excited for bear its pretty short but its the one about a librarian having sex with a bear Sounds painful, interesting theme though. Also thanks for the recs
so I don't understand this thread and I've been meaning to ask. we as individuals make/pick a chart and just come here every day and post our thoughts on an album? Or is there a chart where everybody listens to the same album and we meet up daily. I'm into the idea either way.
BIG UPDATE COMING TODAY I HAD TO DO STUPID SHIT LAST NIGHT

FINALLY BITCH
>квapиyм - Tpeyгoльник (Aquarium - Triangle) Occasionally fun and catchy, but mostly sounds like russian bar songs, and dampened with some bad production choices. 4
>Sutekh - Incest An minimal techno album that understays its welcome? Who would've thought! Excellent production, great textures, and very foreground music. The main problem I have with it is that there are some tracks that should totally go on longer, but rarely does a track on this thing surpass 4 minutes. It's great, though, almost like a mini set. It'll do some bassline or a texture and I'll just go "YES!!!!" in my head. God, I wish we could've seen a Sutekh & Cristian Vogel collaboration. 8
>Pole - 3 Everything I said about Sutekh this is the inverse. Tracks that go on way too long and don't evolve whatsoever. A lot of the tracks on here feel like they're about to build up to something but never do. Good thing they named it after my score.
>Peter Broderick - 4 Track Songs Y'know, it really is weird how Justin Broadrick's name is spelled, like I think that's the only time I've seen it spelled that way. Maybe it's more common than I think and my head just automatically associates more with the Broderick spelling. I don't really remember any of this album. There was instruments? 5
>Various Artists - Music for the Balinese Shadow Play Didn't do it for me, it's really just one isntrument playing things for a while. If it's a soundtrack that makes some sense, as I don't really see this doing that much for me on it's own. 3
>From Nursery To Misery - Equilibrium Talk about a bummer. Ethereal Minimal Synth with vibes very similar to Martin Dupont marred by some of the worst vocal production and singing I've ever heard in the style. Some cuts like Phoenix Dragon and Say Goodbye to the Deep Blue Sky would be genre favourites if they weren't for the godawful vocals. 6
>Gordons - The Gordons I knew Coalminers Song going into this, turns out it's the peak. Not really again does it reach the gritty level that song has, some tracks go on forever, and it has the classic case of not having any sort of punch to it. Still, it's somewhat memorable, and never bad. 6
>町田康 - どてらいやつら (Kou Machida - Wild and Crazy Guys) Wacky, off-kilter and kooky sound collage industrial synthpunk. It's so hectic and crazy, but you can tell in it's madness it's so procisely constructed and everything is intentional. It does one of the best jobs of accomplishing that in synth punk, industrial, and sound collage (even if I'm far from an expert in any of them, sure kicks the big names in the rear). Almost to the point that it doesn't fit into the genres or classification. I also have to shout outtrack 6, as while it's not as Wild and Crazy as the others its some fantastic minimal synth. Sounds like a video of a kitten playing a ball of yarn and then when the bass synth comes in its helicopter shots of lakes and mountains. 9
>Final Cut - Deep Into The Cut It's like EBM techno, which sounds great, and is awesome in the moment, but it moves very slowly, and it doesn't have a whole lot of staying power. I'd love for someone else to take a swing at the style. I like the part where they talk about bestiality and pornography though, funny it's on this chart lol 6
>Almà Fury, Otani Yasuhiro, Otomo Yoshihide & Xavier Charles - High Tones for Winter Fashion. The best EAI I've heard so far. 2.
>David Sylvian - Blemish /The/ David Sylvian? What's he doing pretending to play a guitar and sing stupid things every once and a while? Blemish? Uh, Yeah, a blemish on his career! 5
>The Lucy Show - ...Undone Some of the best jangle pop I've heard around, but in classic jangle/dreampop/"proto-shoegaze"" style, it just doesn't have the 'oomph' factor. A great album, but better reserved for comfy background listening than being on the edge of your seat. I'd blame production, but judging by how powerful some moments on it can be I'd guess songwriting. Not many lows, but the highs just aren't super high. Still, definitely an album I'd keep around. 8
>Red House Painters - Old Ramon What if we made slowcore actually good, but then make every track super duper long? A shame, I would've really liked it if I just didn't find it so tiring. Great distorted guitar tones, but it can become a waiting game for a lot of the tracklisting. Maybe if I get more patience it'll go higher. 6
>Glenn Kotche - Mobile There's sound I guess. There's one song that sounds like those songs that could totally be a techno banger but it was made in like 68 in a laboratory. It's the only track I care about or remember. 5
>Atila - International Sandwich AMERICA! ANGOLA! HUNGARIA! CHINA! LIBYA! SOUTH AFRICA! CANADA! YUGOSLAVIA! ALGERIA! NICARAGUA! RUSSIA! COLOMBIA! SVENSKA! NIGERIA! ROMANIA! CUBA! VENEZUELA! ITALIA! BULGARIA! GUANA! INDIA! BURMA! AUSTRALIA! ARGENTINA! SOMALIA! ETHIOPIA! KENYA! ANDORRA! AUSTRIA! ROMANIA! JAMAICA! BOLIVIA! SAUDI ARABIA! COSTA RICA! PANAMA! TUNISIA! GUATEMALA! LIBERIA! AMERICA!! DON'T FIGHT! UNIIIIIIIIIIITE! Such a fun artsy post-punk sorta album. Every tracks trying to do something different, it's really a whole world of sound. It's like, they agreed on what the song would sound like, and then just made it in one go. Some dude on rateyourmusic gave it one half star, calling it "A mixture of different styles that's mostly unlistenable." I completely agree. 9.5.
>공중도덕 - 공중도덕 (Mid-Air Thief - Mid-Air Thief) (Gongjoong Doduk - Gongjoong Doduk)? Some of the most inventive and fun avant-folk I've heard, which, isn't a lot, but I like this! It's kind of like a halfway between candy claws and non-dub fishmans, but imo better than either. They made that one album that did pretty well last year, I didn't listen to it then though. Maybe I will! 8
>Hans Krusi - EX HK. There are sounds. I do not like the sounds. 2.
>1970 >Incus Records is founded by Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and Tony Oxley >release Topography of the Lungs with Bailey, Parker, and Hans Bennick to substantial critical acclaim >becomes a touchstone of improvised music >1987 >Parker departs Incus to start PSI >takes all of his recordings with him >agrees not to reissue Topography while Incus is still under Bailey >2005 >Bailey dies >2006 >Parker reissues pic related on PSI what a fucking asshole what is his problem???
Do it, if any place is good to post pleb charts then it's in daily. Generally if someone posts a pleb chart here we legit try to give recs, unlike chart threads and other places where you will surely be mocked.
I'll give you recs at least!
Henry Walker
:)
Blake Brooks
He jipped both Bailey and Bennick. The reissue is Evan Parker - Topography of the Lungs rather than credited to the trio. Pretty scummy if you ask me.
Jeremiah Perry
there are multiple reissues crediting the other two after the psi reissue
Joseph Fisher
The point is that PSI is owned by Evan Parker, of which the only issues are credited to solely him.
Feels like some comparisons can be thrown to Angels of Light - How I Loved You, in that this is critically less accepted, likely for stashing aspects that may have made the band unique. Of course, there are lyrics with hidden sadness, songs like Between Days using vivid imagery, drawing a personal and dreamy story.
What it suffers most is little musical ideas paired with too much lingering, which Nina Nastasia proved to be possible to have in emotion based albums like this. 4+
>Glenn Kotche - Mobile >Electronic
Drummer of Wilco does minimalism/techno inspired string instrumentals. Even has what sounds like an interpretation of the Balinese Monkey Chant.
6-
>Atila - International Sandwich >Post-Punk
Politically, it's about as shallow as a modern pop anthem-- as well as having a questionable "African Song" where I'm pretty sure the speaker is just yelling gibberish. Still, a lot of different genres are employed, similar to the Aквapиyм album from before, though there clearly less meaningful ties to them "representing" all nations.
5
>공중도덕 - 공중도덕 >Avant-Folk, Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Folk Impressively dense while being light. Has a richly colorful sound that isn't easily ascribed to genre trappings, and should be lauded for that.
7
>Hans Krusi - EX HK. >Musique Concrete
A Swiss Outsider musician, painter and collagist. His painted art has a childlike appearance, depicting humans and animal both in misshapen, crude forms, with soft and rustic colors. His ventures into music are equally evocative and personal, grasping at the same irregular forms in his art. Animal sounds take a prominent role, alongside recordings that likely took place in Krusi's home. There's an unsophisticated innocence to the percussive sounds taking place on the B-Side that are almost uncomfortable, like that of a man trapped in his own head.
