Perhaps one of the single most underrated bands of all time. I've seriously never seen a band that is so immensely talented, yet so unknown. That new documentary seems to have boosted them a bit, which is great, because more people need to be redpilled on Andy Partridge

pic related is a slightly outdated version of my vinyl collection. Not included is my CDs and a few new records.

I fucking LOVE this band and the dukes and all that. I completely agree with everything you said. That doc was amazing. Do u have a favorite song or album? I just got into mummer and big express and they’re soooo good, idk why all the critics said they were ok to good when clearly they’re excellent. Everyone treats XTC’s career like it just goes from English settlement to skylarking.

comfy song from a comfy album

One of my favorites. Moulding said it’s about meeting his wife in the park when they were courting each other and the fear of being caught while skipping school or work. Kinda romantic! That riff is kino desu

They're kinda popular in Japan.
Guys like Susumu Hirasawa from P-Model and Kera from Uchoten are confessed XTC fanboys.
In fact, if you like early XTC, I recommend P-Model and Uchoten, if you don't mind the language barrier.

Mummer is, in my opinion at least, their most underrated album. I figure it got meh reviews because it came directly after English Settlement, which, by virtue of being a perfect double LP, was hard to follow up. Wonderland is also my favorite Colin Moulding song. Big Express' biggest problem is the sub par production, which is why I'm itching for it to be the next 5.1 release they do.

In terms of favorite albums, in no order:
Black Sea, English Settlement, Chips From the Chocolate Fireball, Oranges and Lemons, and Apple Venus
Then again, they didn't make a bad album, so it's hard to choose. What about you?

LIFE BEGINS AT THE HOOOOOOOP
boys and giirrrllllsssss
I love wonderland! Also yeah I think the whole band has been wishing for a BE remaster for song, I wonder if Steven Wilson will do it like the others? Shiiieeetttt my favorite for a long time was Skylarking, and not my ranking seems to go
Skylarking = ES > O+L = BS = D+W > Dukes Work = mummer and BE > Apple Venus > early work

Here's a song Andy did for the Japanese XTC fan club.

Japan also got these cool little Mini LP CD releases of their Virgin albums, which were made to be reproductions of the original vinyl. Cool stuff.

*now my ranking seems to go

Andy has been indicating on Twitter that he's currently working on another remaster, so here's hoping it's that. The recent re releases of the two Apple Venus albums on vinyl also had a graphic on the dust sleeve that implied that the rest of their albums are going to get repressing this year, so here's hoping.

Good rankings as well. Oranges and Lemons doesn't get nearly enough praise for what it is. It was also my first album with them, so I might be biased, lol. Also good call putting their first two albums in last. They're not bad, really, but compared to what came directly after, they're hot garbage. I love em, but still.

Shinji from Evangelion is also an XTC fan.

That’s awesome. And yeah O+L is incredible AF. Idk how they kept up the songwriting streak that was so strong from D+W onward. Also yeah I like the songs on their early work but idk it’s not what I love them for. I forgot Nonsvch! That record is so underrated and their label Virgin totally fucked them on it. Bastards!

He even wears the shirt in the actual episodes. Thank you, based Anno
What's incredable is that not only did they keep the streak going, but they consistently improved on it as time went on. Drums and Wires is a 9/10, but compare the lyrics between it and one of their later albums; It's a night and day difference.
Virgin still gives them a rough time even today. It's horseshit. That was the greatest gem that company ever had, and they squandered it, all because they didn't want to produce the bubblegum pop album, which would've been great.
Nonsvch is a great follow up to Oranges and Lemons. The Dissapointed is one of my favorite Andy songs, but the whole album has such a great energy to it.

10000% agree with you user. Man fuck virgin, they even screwed over my other 80’s favorites Japan and later David Sylvian's work too! Talk about a band and members that were just as talented as XTC. Man I would’ve KILLED to have heard that bubblegum album. What I would’ve done to have seen them live, they were dope live. My favorite song by them as of late might be Train Running. I’m constantly reading the track by track interviews by the members on the chalkhills fan site. Good shit my man

>Train running low on soul coal, they push pull tactics driving me are loco

God, what a great song. One of my favorites from that album for sure.
I didn't know about them messing with Japan and David Sylvian. Shame that so many artists got shafted at the hands of God damn Richard Branson and his shitty label. Colin and Terry just did a few live shows as TC&I, but according to Colin, he's not interested in doing it any more so, that sucks.

If you're interested in more reading stuff, might I recommend the following:

The XTC Bumperbook of fun, which is compilation of the fanzine Limelight. The same people also have a book coming out about XTC in a month.

Complicated Game: Inside the songs of XTC
Great series of interviews with Andy about pretty much every noteworthy song he ever made. I read this book by listening to each track before reading the chapter, then listening to it again after.
burningshed.com/andy-partridge-and-todd-bernhardt_complicated-game_book

I don’t think Japan and Sylvian had it too bad, it was more a matter of owing them a shit ton of money later in life because they weren’t million sellers. Sylvian DID say that when he got signed he had a ton of freedom and when the guy who signed him left he wrote into his contract that he had a ton of freedom, but by the end of his tenure at virgin he was sort of shopping his stuff around like a super senior at a high school wondering why he’d try considering his music was becoming more and more increasingly experimental and also he wasn’t a money maker but an old act at this point

I fucking HEARD about the TCI shows and mouldings reluctance to make music. I hate that I never got to saw them and that he’s lost interest in music. I wish XTC would just gang up one more time for the fun of it. I’m going to buy the next XTC from that author!! So excited! I heard Jason from jellyfish is being interviewed for it. I’ll chrck out that other book too user.

so it's that gay?
