if youre asking, money is an issue, so yes you shouldnt spend a lot on a first giutar.

Used MIA fender strat or tele ($600-$800) would be great if you have the extra money. Takes away a lot of the excuses of "I'd be better if my gear wasn't shit." It's not going to make you any better though, hopefully just help you focus your goals on improving your knowledge and technique rather than upgrading equipment

I was wondering if I should just make the jump right now since money isn’t an issue to me, to a Player Strat or Pacifica 611/612 for only an extra £150-200 on what I was already planning to pay.

I played and gig'd hot rod for years without issue. The drive is shit, the verb is ok in small quanitities, the only issue I've had is just a re-tube. Clean channel ain't bad, and can take pedals - it does get considerably loud with a overdrive in front of it. I'm more of a fan of the low wattage stuff now, granted I just record at home anymore.
