Today is the greatest

song on this album. And it's on par with Tonight, Tonight and slightly better than 1979 and le rat in cage. Perfect pop song

No, Mayonnaise.

meme song. very overrated

Agreed. Although I prefer Mellon Collie to Siamese Dream. Love SP. Haven't listened to them in a while though.

siamese dream was great but adore was better.

Attached: gwen7.jpg (578x925, 58K)

Yeah every now and then I just go back and binge listen. Lately I've been preferring SD but it oscillates between SD and MCIS.

its great but some songs were pretty forgettable like annie-dog

False the best song is Hummer

It's very close because of hummer's outro, but the first part of hummer isn't as good

what's your favourite from adore

Appels + Oranjes, For Martha, or Ava Adore. actually, thinking about it Adore, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie (with its original vinyl tracklisting ofc) are all tied for me. i cant think of a better three album run than that

Attached: blur.png (405x441, 55K)

I dislike Billy's vocals on Today.
Hummer is the best song on the album.

Based. Add Crestfallen and Perfect to that list for me.
I regret skipping Adore so much when I was a teenager.

>some songs were pretty forgettable like annie-dog
it's memorable as fuck
one of their more unique songs

i love the album but i feel it lacks compared to the rest of it

Cherub Rock is better

>with its original vinyl tracklisting ofc
I prefer the actual tracklist. It flows perfectly

for me is Soma and Geek USA

based

Pug is my favourite - it's pretty similar to eye from around that era which I really like too.

agree
I feel that farewell and goodnight is the perfect ending for the album

At least we can all agree that Rhinoceros is the best one on G*sh.

>mfw Hummer

Attached: pepe headphones crying.png (354x286, 29K)

Snail is also great. It really foreshadows their later SD sound.

yeah

nope siva

its a good song but not as good as rhinoceros

Bury Me and Siva

Luna is neat too.

Why does nobody ever mention Here Is No Why? One of the best on Mellon.

Actually it's Geek USA

Pisces Iscariot is patrician SP

rhinoceros has an annoying chorus and less interesting dynamics, and the rhythm part that plays under the guitar solo sounds like buttrock

and all truechads know that spaced is the best track

Wrong, it's Obscured.

Glad hummer is getting love, perfect 90s alt rock for me

Dad
Dead
Was I ever alive?
Fucking makes you alive in one minute
Solctice
I am solctice filled with mercury
Liquid fucked
See right through your heart
Fuck your heart
I am mercury liquid pure
Hot, alive, dead, mucked fish eyes, doe eyes
I was born alive
I'll fucking kill you
I'll beat your soft baby head with my own hand
Careful with that baby...
Don't ever say the h word around him
Ashamed
I am ashamed of my name
Say it
I hate the sound of your shit because it means no good
It means cheap, liar, smart ass piece of shit
Change it to ray gun you fuck
Billy is the loon
I am the loon
I am mars
Billy addly addly addly...
Your name causes shit
While I may be no expert on this reality,
There is no god, but shame
God is hurt, god is cold
Try that once, god is dead
There is not another one
Battle
Cold heart radio
Feedback
The pain
Recurring messages of badness
Recurring living bad dreams at the vortex of lost souls
Wailing lost souls of shame
We are in one hole
Like a cup of mercury phosphate
Brrr
Shuddering around
Taste my shit you wench
Lifting, wailing lost souls who stand a chance
Hot, my eyes darkly gaze and wonder
Do not enter

Da'rcy is a nudist

Y’all are sleeping on Adore baka. Once Upon a Time is one of my favorite SP songs of all time.

Da'rcy recorded this entire album in her birthday suit

The little guitar harmonics during the final chorus are amazing. Such a small detail adds so much color and nostalgiac energy

Today was the FIRST song I EVER heard from them. Imagine my disappointment when 90% of their other stuff doesn't come close

based "d'arcy recorded siamese dream naked" posters

Today is entry-level Pumpkins. Most of their 90's material is as good if not better

Mellon Collie tracks ranked by Consequence Of Sound

28: We Only Come Out At Night
27: Take Me Down
26: Beautiful
25: Lily (My One And Only)
24: Bodies
23: Farewell and Goodnight
22: Love
21: Tales of a Scorched Earth
20: To Forgive
19: Cupid De Locke
18: Jellybelly
17: By Starlight
16: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
15: In The Arms Of Sleep
14: X.Y.U
13: Fuck You (An Ode To No One)
12: Where The Boys Fear To Tread
11: Here Is No Why

4: Tonight, Tonight
3: Muzzle
2: Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans

Quiet is my track

>We Only Come Out At Night dead last
Well at least they got that one right

Gish : Snail
Siamese Dream : Hummer
Piesces Iscariot : Starla
MCATIS : Jellybelly
Adore : Appels + Oranjes

These are fact

For me, it's Lily

Cupid De Locke will forever and always be my favorite SP track

Nice. For years I thought it was James doing the spoken word part at the end.

LIFES A BUMMERRRRRR

It's not nearly as obnoxious though

to this day i can't understand why hello kitty kat was a b side for this album, one of the best sp songs for sure

Yeah, I'd swap it with Luna

Based

Siamese Dream needed more faster tracks like Geek USA. Maybe they should have put Pissant on there. As it is, the album can get quite tedious with all the mid-tempo tracks. Mellon Collie is superior and changes things up consistently

no way. it already has enough of them.
the jarring transition from a 10/10 like spaceboy to silverfuck almost made the album a 9/10 instead of a 10 for me.

Frail and Bedazzled was the best song not on the album

It's not that jarring desu. Literally just a guitar riff

Geek USA is the greatest rock song of all time

And Bodies is the greatest metal song of all time

Stumbleine is the greatest folk song of all time

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the greatest classical piece of all time

hummer is best smashing pumpkins

I’d put Bodies and Jellybelly higher but otherwise accurate.

Poorfag here...
Does anyone have a link to the song info from the Mellon Collie deluxe edition?

Nah senpai, it's Stumbleine

yep, that and Porcelina are god-teir songs.

welcome to the /billy/ general

still better than KPOP general

Melon Collie is a better album. Did Billy's father record music too is it available? I wonder how Bush are doing.

why

Well, who hasn't heard of this album? I think the young should show us what's going down 2bh. And like, he's more recent music is a more worhy thing of denbate.

It is actually a danger that you're going to innoculate a new wave with thius which I don't agree with/. Not in a fascistic way, but, you know

yes

youtube.com/watch?v=SRdSoZO-5mM

Machina is the best SP album.

The sound of Pumpkins is characterized by transitions between heavy/noise and soft dream pop. With Machina they successfully pushed their heaviness to it's peak and rather than utilizing transitions managed to integrate the soft pop into the sound. Gone are the transitions and what's left is a masterwork.

why don't you guys give gish its proper respect it's obviously SP top 3 it's my number 1

Gish has killer solos.

kek

same my favorite song on the album

yeah Gish is fucking good, on the same level as Siamese Dream imo
especially considering it was a debut album

also Billy finally got his stolen Gish guitar back which he will use for the Shiny Vol 2 recording
maybe he will go back to that psychedelic sound he had back then

i wish

from his rolling stone interview about the found guitar

billy should just drop solo projects and drop SP altogether

Yes

Why? He loves making music
there's lots of people who appreciate his work
and the fact that James came back after more than 15 years of not even talking to Billy says a lot

>Best
Mayonnaise
>Runner-Up
Soma
>Worst
Sweet Sweet
>Underrated

>Overrated
Disarm

he already created amazing music under SP people are always going to want the old SP back but he's never going to do that so he should just drop it

1979 is the only good one they ever did

james played bass

i hope they don't call the next album Shiny Vol 2

fuck yes

>Very Shiny, Vol. 2

It's up there for sure, the drumming on that track in particular is fucking insane. Butch Vig said it was the most impressive feat of drumming he has ever witnessed.

it's probably the one from siamese dream i see mentioned the least. really cool riff and i love when darcy joins in on the 'my eyes, never forget' line

damn i really wouldn't have put bodies that low
wouldn't put porcelina anywhere near that high either
i do strongly disagree whenever people say mellon collie is half filler. i wouldn't drop any of the songs.

Mayonaise is the best song on the album you fucking degenerate

>i love when darcy joins in on the 'my eyes, never forget' line
Damn, I always thought it was Billy singing in falsetto.
Now I can't un-hear it.
Fuck.

I was just being quick about it.
It will be probably be
Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 2/LP: (new name here)

The reason I follow SP is because they try to change it up every time and I want to hear what they've come up with.
Not because they stamp out the same shit over and over again.

never seen a pumpkins thread with this many replies before

There was one a few days ago that reached bump limit. Mu is starting to wake up to their brilliance.
Machina II needs more love though...
youtube.com/watch?v=P-auI7-x5jU

Maybe a Pumpkins /general/ is a good idea

>Mu is starting to wake up to their brilliance.
This Billy Coran guy is a complete asshole, everybody knows

What's next? A Neutral Milk Hotel general?

Jesus christ are you some newfags or what

Anyways as much as I appreciate the odd transhumanist aesthetic of Machina II, I always felt it was a bit overrated actually. Many of the tracks sound barely better than demo quality, which is out of character for Billy to be okay with putting out as a major release

You call us newfags and you think Machina II is a major release? C'mon, do some research. Anyway, Machina and Machina 2 are getting a proper remix for the reissue this year

The whole board is a Neutral Milk Hotel general desu

I call you newfags for thinking Pumpkins have ever been anything but massively popular here. And I am very aware that it never got a full major release, but it was intended to, and it did have an official albeit limited vinyl pressing run of the in the multi EP format

If it had gotten a proper release it would have sounded like Machina because it was supposed to be a double album.

It didn't get label support so it was released independently, but the mix we have IS the final mix as Billy intended it. As confusing as that is.

it's my absolute favourite album of all time. it was the first CD I bought myself. my favourite song is rocket, but today is fucking amazing.

fuck

It's not though, which it why he's remixing it

I wouldn't call SP a grunge band, but you can't deny that they were riding the early grunge wave from 91-94 in terms of aesthetic. Cherub Rock and Today are absolutely grunge songs.

AND IN THE EYES OF THE JACKAL

Innosense, Home and Here's To The Atom Bomb (New Wave Version) are some of their best tracks

>Cherub Rock and Today are absolutely grunge songs
Wat. I guess Placebo and My Bloody Valentine were grunge too

That's not exactly fair or accurate to say, because with that logic the remastered versions of all the other albums were the "intended" versions, which obviously isn't the case. It's just a way to make use of newer technology to get new listeners on board, while bringing out some previously obscured details in the best case scenario

punkins are post-avant-grunge :3

yeah i think he's re-releasing them because of newer technology to master them the way he wanted, but also because they have a ton of b-sides and demos that fans want to hear. one thing about the pumpkins was their b-sides were pretty awesome. i think billy just wants to get them out there for people to hear.

Placebo and MBV both sound a lot different from SD-era Pumpkins.

1988 - 1990: weird marked/goth pumpkins shit
1990 - 1996: peak pumpkins
1997 - 2000: billy trying too hard to be different from what the pumpkins used to be and failing
2007 - Present: some decent songs, but overall disappointing because billy lost his songwriting touch

He didn't remix the other albums though, just remastered them.
Billy even said that Machina wasn't produced to the point of completion

That must fucking hurt to hear a song about forgiving your parents for wrongdoings and knowing that you'll probably never be able to do that yourself.

and Sd-era Pumpkins sounds a lot different to grunge. Anyway, grunge was a label given to the bands that came out of Seattle.

>Bodies
There's something about this track I really like, that while being quite dull musically, I has a dark atmosphere, love the chorus of NOBODYS EVER NEW and LOVE IS SUICIDE.

Farewell & Goodnight is way more boring.

I love the acoustic version
youtube.com/watch?v=0uMBzxCfLJg

>weird marked/goth pumpkins shit
I'd kill for a studio version of this song, though.

youtube.com/watch?v=O--BSG85mmM

there was nothing in the early to mid 90s that sounded like siamese dream desu. it wasn't as raw as grunge bands of that era. it was meticulously produced, with an insane amount of guitar parts for some songs. it was this weird mix of a number of genres billy was influenced by.

I suppose we'll see once it comes out, I'm expecting it to get the same treatment that all the other records got personally.
And it is amazing just how many tracks just keep getting pulled out of the vaults. Pumpkins discography rivals Lil B's I think, which is saying something. Its also funny how when you first get into them (or at least when I was a teen and first got into them) you think tracks like Turns Left, Looks Right is a deep cut, then as the years go on you find Mashed Potatoes, and then randomly Billy is like oh yeah here's another hundred songs from this era that just never saw the light of day. Plus all the covers and jams that would only get performed live

>while being quite dull musically
I dunno man. It's got a really interesting structure. Definitely not the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus. Also, when most of the sections get repeated they change it up bu making it softer, or adding a guitar lead in the background, or jimmy playing toms instead of a straight beat. I reckon it's deceptively complex, even though the guitar riffs by themselves are simple

don't get me wrong there were song good songs in that late 80s era. i used to have the moon demo cassette with jennifer ever and honeyspider, those were amazing songs. and gish was somewhat like that, but imo SD and MCIS were peak pumpkins because I never heard anything like that before in my life. but i may be biased because i grew up with that and was a huge pumpkins fan in the mid 90s.

yeah absolutely. mashed potatoes was a huge revelation for me. same with the aeroplane flies high box set. i never would have heard those songs otherwise until much later on.

I wonder if they did a band version of Laugh. Would love to hear it

Post your favorite rare Pumpkins track.

this was the holy grail for me for some reason.

Oh, I remember getting so stoked on Feel Our Love and Superchrist, back when Zeitgeist was new and exciting. At that point I was just graduating high school and obviously wasn't around for new Pumpkins music in the past, so it was really exciting times despite everyone complaining about how different the Zeitgeist era was compared to classic Pumpkins. If only we could forsee just how bad it would truly get post-Zeitgeist ;_;

Oh shit, and now that I'm looking at the image attached to the song I'm remembering that FOL was actually made for a Nissan (?) car commercial. Some brand of car commercial at least. Those were some seriously strange times.

I also remember getting the If All Goes Wrong dvd and being somewhat enamored with Corgan's seemingly humble demeanor. Looking back, he must have been feeling absolutely lost back then.

G.L.O.W. was another song around the time of FOL that stood out. And I really wish I could find the original version of Superchrist that came out on a compilation titled Fresh Cuts vol. 2, it was far superior to the music video/final cut that we ended up getting

if machina was released as the two-disc set it was planned on it would have been their best album
i'm glad i'm not alone on this

You know it wasn't Billy who had anything to do with the remastering or remixing in any case right? He wasn't hands on, it was handled by EMI.

From a press release on Billy's old livejournal billycorgan.livejournal.com/45333.html

>Starting this fall (exact date TBA), EMI Music will honor the legacy of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS with an extensive campaign that will see the iconic band’s albums from 1991-2000 reissued in fully remastered deluxe versions, each with bonus material.

>With the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS--who’ve created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums--EMI will roll out the global catalog campaign with the band’s 1991 debut album GISH, 1993’s SIAMESE DREAM and the 1994 compilation album PISCES ISCARIOT.

>The excitement will continue into 2012 when EMI will reissue 1995’s nine-times-platinum double album MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS, 1996’s five-disc box set THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH and 1998’s ADORE.

>In 2013, their 2000 albums MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD and MACHINA II: THE FRIENDS & ENEMIES OF MODERN MUSIC will be unified into one package. A best-of compilation will also be released in 2013. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.

So much for 2013 lol, that time schedule went the way of the "44 song epic" Teargarden by Kaleidyscope

That's a good one. It's got a midwest emo feel to it.

that's when you know an opinion doesn't count

None of those are really rare, especially Drown. It's basically on par with Rhinoceros and Mayonaise as a Pumpkins classic.

Yeah, he didn't physically remaster them himself, but he was there going through all the outtakes and b-side choosing which tracks to include. Sucks that they fucked up the Pisces Iscariot reissue by using the wrong take for Plume. I noticed it straight away

Based. Sweet Sweet is pure class.

Sweet Sweet is adorable. I'll fight anyone who calls it filler.

Something that short can't be filler, it doesn't fill up anything

A question for everyone...

What is the earliest studio album track that you consider a bad song?

For me their catalogue is basically flawless until The Crying Tree Of Mercury. Super bland track in my opinion.

Tales of a Scorched Earth is best

This sounds like a Zwan track to me

As much as I understand how Billy’s singing can be offputting, he really does have the perfect voice for what he does. He can do that really angry, screeching, grating voice like in that song or he can do soft and ethereal dream pop-esque vocals like in 1979 or most of Siamese, and on top of that he can transition smoothly between the two mid-verse.

I will never stop shilling this deep cut in threads like this:

One of their best desu

this is their best deep cut imo

one from the early days

>while being quite dull musically
It's one of my top 5 on the album, I'd give so much to have been there to hear this version live. youtube.com/watch?v=5_fB5x-QXM0
Amazing energy.

FUCK this guy! What, did he just come from a swimming competition or something? Who does he think he is?

FUUUUUUCK >:(

eh, doesn't really feel like there's an interesting idea in that one honestly. like aeroplane flies high might be kinda underdeveloped, but it has a really great riff which makes it pretty nice - same with starla.

D'arcy is CUTE!

She was on top form during the Adore tour ;)

sure is :,)

If you want to cringe, just watch him completely butcher 1979 here:
youtube.com/watch?v=KlV2Hu1okyI&t=4207s

Lol, D'arcy sure fucked up the intro to that song. But yeah, fuck that scuba gear guy

Maynard James Keenan crashed the concert.

wish billy could still jump around like this and sing like this. or at the very least, not dress up like techno nosferatu.

I just want his voice back. The other stuff I can live without

youtube.com/watch?v=FOz8XUDuBQE
Why in the fuck won't he release a proper studio version of this? This is the best post-breakup song I've heard

The studio version would never compare to this. The vocals would be mixed too loud like always

y'all heard this?? youtube.com/watch?v=6T52quLc2Ss

He'd look goofy doing that as a middle-aged man. Nothing lasts forever, it's best that he doesn't ruin the memory of his younger days.

Anyone got a better rip of the Storytellers concert?

I prefer the SD era version of it

Another cool deep cut is this from the late 80s era
youtube.com/watch?v=CYaZWj58Rj8

I used to have it but unfortunately it's on a dead hard drive. There are some tracks on youtube
youtube.com/watch?v=_uvsGGBlPE0

Nice. Never heard this version before. I still think I prefer the stripped down official recording. It's magical. Still, it's cool to hear it as a harder alt rock jam

Extremely based and redpilled.

Cheers mate. I like to think so.

Have you seen how goofy he is on stage nowadays?

did you see his covers of Snail and Bodies at the 30th anniversary show

Da'rcy is a naturist

listened to siamese dream for the first time in 10 years because of this thread.

holy fuck the drumming is amazing.

>techno nosferatu.

Overproduced desu. You can hear where vocal tracks and drum tracks are stitched together in some places, but good songs. I've always wondered why Billy shits on Iha all the time when there was insane amounts of editing and layering going on. The live versions they did in '94 are amazing though, especially "Disarm". Apparently some sound engineer posted a thread on SA and said that Billy chops up his vocal tracks syllable by syllable because his pitch is so awful. He also had an armored car deliver millions of dollars of gold bullion to the recording studio because Billy thought that Obama was going to tank the economy. lol.

>He also had an armored car deliver millions of dollars of gold bullion to the recording studio because Billy thought that Obama was going to tank the economy
Sounds like something he would do, but source?

Most of this is incorrect

Anyone here dig Oceania? I thought it was as good as neo-pumpkins got. The whole album has a really spacious, fresh atmosphere I really dig.

good shit user

WHEN YOURE A HUMMERRRRRR

i liked it. the first time i saw billy live was at the LA show. was good that he played two sets

it has some good tracks but the production's mediocre

nice

his drumming is even better on mellon collie

Eh no it's not

Ok, what songs on Siamese Dream have better drums than Jellybelly and An Ode To No One? Geek USA is great but it's less complex.

>Most of this is incorrect
No it's not. If you have a good year you can hear the stitching of words and various guitar parts. He's done this since at least SD but it first became publicly known during MCIS in a Rolling Stone article.

Yeah, they were going for a "perfect" sound on that album which is why they chopped up the drums. Pretty great results considering Jimmy doesn't play to a click track.
Billy doesn't up his vocals syllable by syllable. More like section by section or line by line. Most vocalists do this if they're going for perfection.

*chop his vocals

The drumming here is insane

Listening to Machina and Wound is really underappreciated. The chorus hits those good spots.

I think Machina has only 5 good songs, but they are all very good
The singles (Everlasting Gaze, Try Try Try, Stand Inside your love) + Wound and Age of Innocence

On the other hand Machina II has more than an album of good songs. I often feel like Billy needed an editor because he couldnt tell apart his good songs from his bad songs.
Songs like Vanity should have been in Machina

>I think Machina has only 5 good songs, but they are all very good
>The singles (Everlasting Gaze, Try Try Try, Stand Inside your love) + Wound and Age of Innocence
Glass And The Ghost Children is fucking amazing

What's Billy's most nasal vocal performance?

Innosense or Wound

Siamese Meme

I really want them to be good again lads. I don't know if I just want my teenage years back or what but there's a puzzle piece I need back in my life that only SP can fill.

smashing pumpkins fucking suck you soibois
