If it's lifesaving and not elective then you get the procedure - as long as it's not some kind of specialty surgery. You then get billed at rack rates (the highest fucking rates possible) and of course if you can't pay you don't. You bill then gets sent to collections and you have to negotiate.

If someone doesn't have health insurance, they usually know where to go to get cheap/free medical care. Most cities have clinics that opperate on donations and work very similar to regular clinics. I know of one that costs 25 bucks a month and that includes prescriptions, check ups, illness checks, and recently added light dental work. As far as surguries and more serious things, it's up to the providers. They typically wouldn't risk their jobs/positions no matter how much they want to help (it's not like TV dramas, but a majority DO care). That being said, the cold hard truth is that if you aren't in dire need or risk of immediate death, they take care of you until you're out of the ICU perameters and then you gotta go.
It's a shitty system, and an expensive one, but we are one of the leaders in medical innovation, and have been for some time. We are at the forefront for advancements in the medical field in almost every way. Hell, as soon as we discover a solution to an outbreak or find a cure to any disease, we mass produce it and give it to other countries for free. When I was a medic in the Army, I was deployed to Africa for 6 months teaching preventative medicine and giving Ebola vaccines to the locals in 2015 when the world was freaking out about it. We literally sent our military to provide aid, left, and went about our business all while everyone was pissed because we "weren't doing anything."

Not everything little thing is covered by the gov't. For instance, medication (outside the hospital) isn't covered. Or if you want a private room at the hospital. Or you want 2 hearing aides (province only pays for one). Or you want a better invalidity payout (if you can't work again) or better salary replacement (if your health problem prevents you from working for a short while). Or dental costs (province only covers up to age 14).
Long story short, vast majority of Canadians don't have private health insurance.

Almost all hospitals offer some sort of financial aid if you ask. they basically put you on a payment plan. They rather get paid some money than no money. It's pretty fucked up though you can haggle for something life medical treatment.
Anyone who defends this system has never had to use it for an extended period of time. it's a fucking nightmare.

Honestly, the only 3 problems with medical care in America:
1. Insurance racket causing skyrocketing medical bills.
2. Our economy being in the toilet. Our GDP might go up but the average person isn't seeing any increase in standard of living over it. We are just too broke to pay for our excellent medical care. And that's not entirely the fault of the medical situation itself.
3. Poverty, not just generalized we are doing poorly economically, but the huge numbers of people in our country that can't or won't work. America takes such great care of our poor that many of them have decided that they'll be 5 years old forever and always let mommy and daddy take care of them. This is a huge burden on the working American's to pay for those that can't or won't put anything into the system themselves.

I have clients tyat are happy to turn 65 and go on medicare because they are paying 600 or 800 a month for obamacare.When obamacare came out it redefined the bare minmum that a company could offer and still be considered " insurance".
I have seen companies that offer a crap policy that picks up 10% of your costs per each $2000 that you come out of pocket, and flat out tell their employees if they dont like it get better insurance on the marketplace.

I have to annually recertify to sell marketplace (obamacare) insurance as well. Every year I have to retske a fraud,waste and abuse and anti money laundering test ( to make sure people are not funding criminal enterprises or terrorism with life insurance policies, etc).

Yeah, it's really not that bad unless you're poor as fuck or don't bother getting health insurance. I've never had issues that weren't covered but I've always accepted that I had to pay insurance premiums. Besides the quality of American health care is great.

as a person in the medical field, it depends on the type of surgery
being completely nonpolitical and to the point, if it's a life-threatening surgery (as in one you needed or you'd die) after say a car crash or something, we would operate on you. From there, your insurance can cover it, you can work out a payment plan with your insurance, or if you don't have insurance at all, we can get you a financial manager to sit with and talk about how to pay your fees and we can set up a payment plan, have you apply for Medicare (old ppl care) or Medicaid (POOR POOR POOR people's insurance) and if you don't qualify, we can usually figure something out.
if it's a non-necessary surgery like plastic surgery, you pay out of pocket almost completely because insurance doesn't cover it unless you have good insurance or it has genuine medical basis in contrast to "i want to look better"
tl;dr - if it's vital to you staying alive, we'll operate and help you handle the debt however we can. 9 times out of 10 at MY medical facility, we won't just dump a gigantic bill on our patients, especially our poor patients, because we know you cant pay and/or that we wont get the money. it's about having a good relationship with the community.

So if you have a painful chronic condition or something that will kill you slowly unless treated, you’re shit out of luck.
