In order to answer this question, you have to know what consciousness is, and nobody does quite yet. So anyone who has replied in this thread with any kind of "certainty" is "certainly" wrong.

From everything we've researched so far, the sensation of consciousness seems to arise from the interaction of lower-level complex systems. Look up "complexity theory" if you want to go down that rabbit hole. But the idea is that you have all these individual systems -- components that are specialized to do small tasks, but they all come together and add up to something greater than the sum of their parts.

When you die and these systems shut down and no longer react to stimuli, the overall system loses entropy and the whole thing likely dissipates.
