If you only have a phone and no webcam, there's an app called droidcam (on Android) that lets you use USB debugging and a desktop app to use it as a webcam

My laptop has a webcam but I was wondering if there is anything I can use to record in the background and that hopefully wont let the recording light turn on while its working.

computers are way easier than phones. you just have any webcam recording app, minimize it and you can even turn the screen off. i did this in 2001 to fuck with my stepdad.

If you have android theres an app straight up just called secret video recorder, works pretty well

Small piece of tape should do the work.
