Consider the sheer size of the universe. It is estimated that there are roughly one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. In the Milky Way Galaxy alone, there are roughly 100 thousand million stars, which is probably the average number per galaxy (more or less). If the overwhelming majority of stars possess planets orbiting them, we are likely to find numerous Earth-like planets. Just in our own local cluster of stars, we are discovering planets that possess characteristics similar to Earth. If even one planet per galaxy possesses life, then it would still mean the existence of billions of planets with life on them.
We are beginning to understand characteristics of life as the field of biology grows, and if the conditions are met, such as an abundance of the basic biogenic elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorous, as well as if the planet is at a distance from its star to sustain liquid water, then it is feasible that certain chemical reactions occurring over time can give birth to basic self-replicating molecules that form into protein chains which trigger an evolutionary process.
It's difficult to say just what life may be like on other planets given vastly different circumstances, but given the sheer amount of time the universe has existed and the sheer number of potential planets in the universe, I cannot imagine that Earth is the only planet to possess life.
The universe is incredibly vast, though. One struggles to truly conceptualize the vast distances just between planets and solar systems, let alone between galaxies. Life is most likely not a particularly common phenomenon given the specific circumstances needed, but it is almost statistically inevitable that it occurs elsewhere. Think of the lifeforms that may exist out there with completely separate existences. Consider the diversity of life that emerges just on Earth, and consider what might be out there - life that we'll likely never see
