My grandpa was a WWII vet who was part of the frontline troops who helped liberate the camps. He would tell us that at the time the US government had estimated a total of 250,000 Jews had died and mostly from starvation and disease, this was also why they suggested the guards be held accountable since they believed the Nazi could have prevented most of the death but choose to neglect their duty to do so. There was no discussion of it being a planned genocide until several years later when the founding of Israel was being discussed at which point the accusations started to occur.
Considering all of the evidence presented at the Nuremberg trials cooperated his version of events I'm a bit more inclined to believe him over stories of 6 million people being burned to ash that somehow magically vanished without a trace.
