Tipping generally stated as a form of convenience. Your meal total was 35 and you withdrew 40 from the atm, just hand the server the cash and go off on your way. Americans love convenience.
However times changed, servers depend on that extra change or tips and everyone is buying diner on credit. Which is great on restaurant owners because customers are more likely to spend more. But restaurant owners got cute and so did law makers. They created a tipped employee wage which is 2 dollars and some change under federal law.
Now tipping is more so based on service. It's best to view tipping as a bonus the customer grants and employee earns. You're not obligated to tip because the restaurant owner still has to pay the server full minimum wage if they fail to make that on tips (even though most restaurant owners don't) so in conclusion it is not your responsibility to pay server wages.
However tipping creates a more competitive environment which is always better for the customer and you can build relationships with your local servers. In general it just makes dining out more pleasurable. If you fail to understand that then you're more than welcome to cook for your own fatass at home every night. Remember when you dine in at a restaurant, your're not only paying for food but for service and the experience.

So, I come from Denmark. We don't tip. A lot of places tipping is rude. It's just not part of our culture. As for service, if it's bad, people just stop coming, so employees are expected to deliver a nice experience for customers. Wages are probably higher in DK tho.
