Never read the books, but the comics have a very strong style and atmosphere to them. You're not reading about random superheroes like in the movie, but actual characters from the 1800s. Also, it's not a retarded "Save the World" threat, it's just London. It keeps the scale reasonable while still doing a lot of interesting stuff.

I'm from Rome, I don't know how similar it is to France, but here you can do a lot of without a diploma. Many friends did that and honestly there are not doing bad. However, you need to really be active and look for every single occasion you can have. Social interaction is also very good. Knowing people can lead to so many things in so many unseen ways, it's crazy. There is also perspective, I went to university and I still think I could have so many more choices, it's almost depressing. Without personal projects I would probably be hopeless af.
